Vestiges of NES storytelling
Besides, it gets hilarious after a while, not even Tellah stays 100% dead for the entire game

>Jumps from an airship several hundred meters into an active volcano strapped to a massive bomb that explodes and causes the entire mountain to collapse
>"t'was just a scratch!"

How can you not love this?

Clearly you aren't familiar with NES storytelling.

All the miraculous survivals in FF4 were a direct response to the poor reception of all the permanent deaths in FF2.

His beard absorbed the blast, prove me wrong
>>

Oh I don't mean it in the sense that NES games didn't have deaths. I just meant that back in those days storytelling was more "loose" to the point where writers didn't quite care to come up with a credible explanation for when something like this >>344219313 happening, or for explaining their plot points in extensive detail.

It's not necessarily a bad thing either

Hm, you may be right. And his goggles absorbed the lava, and his hammer absorbed the five thousand megatons of rock that fell on him. It all makes sense now!

There are still people on this board who admit that FFIV is their favorite/best unironically.

And you faggots still bash on FFIX.

Stop giving IXfags a bad name

Fans were probably still butthurt from FFII where the 4th party member always did the same thing but stayed dead, not only rendering whatever investment you put into them worthless but also forcing you to basically start from scratch every time a new guy joins up. Sure they're like appropriately leveled for whatever you're doing, but they'll always severely lag behind Firion Maria and the other dude as a result.
