Are those not USD?

one crate is a dollar you should be paying 40 something
>>
>>344215686
eh?

you don't have to buy them
you can get cosmetics through normal play

If you're not shit, you can level up twice in about 2 and a half hours of gameplay (if you're over lvl 22, where the xp needed peaks at 22k).

Only shitters buy boxes since the game gifts them to you for hitting "play", pretty much
>>
>>344215686
>blaming blizzard because your cunt elected a PM based on a promise that he would legalize weed and then he immediately sold all your countries gold

fuck off
>>
>>344215686
Micro transactions shouldn't be in the game in the first place, I agree, but nothing in these things actually effects gameplay and they're totally option to buy with real money.
>>
>>344215803
It's the fact that they are selling on disk content in a AAA release
>>
>game has no progression system
>game reaches beta
>people complain they want progression
>blizzard add it in
>purely cosmetic
>can buy rng boxes to speed up your progression
>still all cosmetic
whats the problem, oh thats right there isnt one, Blizzard gave people what they asked for welcome to modern gaming
>>
>>344216380
But none of the content is exclusive to loot boxes you buy, and as far as I'm aware, the RNG is the same. What's the fucking issue? You don't nave to buy anything when you get a lootbox every time you level just by playing the game and having fun.
>>
>>344216729
What about the ON DISK content locked behind the CE?
>>
This shit is inexcusable
>>
>>344216170
Takes about 8 games to level up

The fucking content is not locked on the disk you dense motherfucker, what part of "it can be unlocked by leveling up and playing the game" did you not fucking understand.
>>
>>344216828
It's hardly locked content. You have a chance to win anything in the game with each box you earn. The only things which you could currently call "locked" would be the gold weapons, since who the hell has 300 comp points already? That shit is a fucking a grind.

The OE stuff is a special something for people who bought that edition.
>>
>>344215686
>Buying lootboxes

KYS Blizzcuck or no if you buy this you're stupid as fuck. Just enjoy playing the game the shit you get won't make you better.
>>
>>344215686
They're purely cosmetic, you're able to play the game competitively without them. Furthermore, virtually all of that content can be unlocked via normal game play.

It's just a bit of fun. What the hell is your beef? Nothing you unlock has any effect on the game itself. It's not as if people who can afford to buy a billion loot boxes are gonna be getting stuff which will make them stronger than you or anything like that. I really don't understand the hate for this system of unlocking stuff gradually as you play. I mean, you're gonna be playing the game anyway, right? So what's the problem?

Just play the game and have fun.

I'm okay without microtransactions in a F2P game but a game with a price tag (ESPECALLY 60 dollars) has no business doing it.

its to subsidize for the free updates in the future, more people buying boxes=more money to use to make maps/new characters/skins

or would you rather pay money for those dlc instead of having an optional micro transaction that others enjoy using that subsequently fund your future free content?

or maybe you are entitled to all content for free forever after paying $60?

with overwatch you still get that random grind for unlocks, but you don't even get the game for free. all the downsides, none of the upsides

no, the grind is playing loot box slots for random drops
they could have just given you a couple hundred gold every level so you could guarantee that skin in a set amount of time, but then you could just play the game and not even consider buyying those jew crates.
the random nature of the unlocks is the problem. you think you added sprays because it was a cool feature?

>awh you dind't get that skin?, maybe buy 50 more boxes for more chances to get it!

Or play 200 games and get enough gold to buy anything you want. It's not that bad.
>>
Just to put my understanding of the argument into this thread:

>It's only cosmetic
Cosmetic content is still desirable content with value. It's a LOT less valuable than gameplay but it's entertainment which is what a game is all about. Especially considering how much popularity exploded just on the character designs and porn, you really can't say the cosmetic stuff doesn't have value.

>It's an option and you can get them for free
You pay with time and currently loot boxes come in pretty thin, about one box an hour and that box could be a grey grey blue grey of skins and voices. F2P games make the time cost of their content really high so that the value of using money is greater and you're more likely to do that. While not as bad as F2P games, the current rate of getting loot boxes is a foot on the grind side. You shouldn't get all the cosmetics for free because there's value in earning your boxes, but the current rate is pretty low. 2 boxes per level up would be reasonably comfy, about 3 boxes per play session. Having a pay option means there's no incentive to increase the EXP rate since they can say "if you want more just pay" which is F2P mentality.
>>
>>344221472
Dota 2
>>
>>344224030
I spent £10 on 13 loot boxes, cos fuck it, I had the money there was only one skin I really wanted (Mercy Imp skin, of course). I wasn't about to spend the money on something more worthwhile and now I have the one skin I wanted I don't care about loot boxes. I have about 1400 in the bank I don't know what to do with.

My only criticism of the whole loot box thing is the fucking duplicates. Loot boxes are already filled with enough junk no one will ever use, 90% of sprays and voice lines are of no interest to anyone, if they want a particular spay or voice line for their heroes then those are the only ones they want, people are hardly switching up their sprays and voice lines all that often. But not only are you likely to earn junk you won't ever use, you can't sell it for full price so you can buy things you do want to use, instead if you get it again you get a small fraction it's value given to you. Literally making worthless junk, even more worthless
>>
>>344215686
You just need to stop being a fag that takes cosmetics so seriously. This game is casual as fuck that rewards players for literally just playing. You don't have to do anything different from just playing the game to "grind" loot.
>>
>/v/ hates unlockables now
>>
>>344224987
>you get money from getting a duplicate
>that money isn't a large enough sum for my taste so it's LITERALLY NOTHING

Video games haven't been keeping up with inflation. A standard console game has been $60 for several years already. I rather pay $60 for a game and not spend a cent on useless cosmetics than spend $75 to get all of it and never use it.
In fact I'm glad blizzard went against the trend of making it locked behind a paywall or pay2win garbage.
>>
>>344215686
You get a crate every time you level up.
You have unlimited levels.
There are hardly that many items.
You accumulate gold to buy what you want in crates and for duplicates.

There is literally no reason to ever buy loot crates unless you are an autistic child with an addiction and/or a for profit streamer. You will get what you want simply by playing the game a modest amount.
>>
>>344225435
>Video games haven't been keeping up with inflation
Yes they have through digital distribution. Even non-digital games don't come with manuals anymore. There have been tons of ways publishers have been cutting costs over the years to keep up with inflation.

Pretty sure it's 5% of it's cost. Why include that? What advantage is there to having a tiny fraction of the value of an item you already have? Why not just replace it with actual money drops? Why no replace it with items you don't have? Why not make it possible to sell duplicates for a decent price to make it easier to buy things you actually want?
>>
>>344224958

If you "pay" instead of "enjoy" your time with the game, then maybe, just maybe you shouldn't play it in the first place
>>
>>344225627
I'm just saying they're not free, there's a cost attached and I think it's too high, but it's not the only reason you play. What's wrong with wanting the same gameplay but getting a few more boxes for the same effort?
>>
>>344225969
You can have both though. Enjoy playing the game and have fun getting more boxes while you do. To hyperbolize in the opposite direction, if it took twice as long to get a box the gameplay is still the same but the loot box system on it's own is bullshit.

Well the quicker you "have fun getting more boxes" the quicker you'll run out of fun aka. you'll unlock everything you want quick and stop giving a shit about the whole system. While it might be ok for you, because maybe you don't like the crate system, there's a lot of people that are complete opposite.

>get 4 fucking things instead of just one thing in the crate
How is this wrong?
>>
>>344226620
Not them but 25% is kinda shitty when it's an epic box earlier on. At least when the box just gives you money it's 50% it's rarity value.
>>
>>344216828
Well for one you can't buy a "disc" without that content. For another that version of the game costs $40.
>>
>>344226832
People think 40 minutes is a bit much for something that's random and could be a grey grey blue grey of sprays and voice lines. Is there anything wrong with wanting them every 20 minutes instead? Over a dollar per box is also pretty overkill if you did want to go that route, I'd cut that price in half as well.

Saying content isn't free because you have to actually play the game to get it, regardless of the time it takes, is incorrect and manipulative. Sure you pay to get the game, but when all the content on the disc is accesible by playing the game, complaining about it amounts to whining about it.

FTC's consumer affairs deals with deceptiveness and fraud. they aren't the legislature, they don't get to decide what is or isn't gambling or whether it's legal. unless the developers are fundamentally misleading consumers about what they can get or what their chances are, the FTC can't touch them
>>
>>344227441
You're right I might be hyperbolizing the terminology a bit but I'm still comparing it to F2P games. You can technically get a full game out of many F2P games but they're intentionally designed to be so drawn out and take so long that the only enjoyable way is to fess up cash. The loot boxes are random, contain a lot of garbage, and come in so slow that it's touching this territory. It's not NEARLY as bad, but it's not terribly fun either. You shouldn't get them all automatically which is what I meant by 'free', but you should get them at a rate where you feel reasonably satisfied. An 40-60 minutes or over a dollar per box is a bit high, I'd cut both values in half.
>>
>>344226916
What level are you?

Once you get past 50 it really starts adding up
>>
>>344227769
Games are about fun not 100% about performance and cosmetics have fun value. You can argue that you think the current rate is fine, which is fine as an opinion, but to say they aren't worth anything because they don't affect performance is just silly. They could have made the whole game look drab with characters having the same lines and it wouldn't affect gameplay, it'd be boring as shit though.
>>
>>344228158
In the 70's and you're right, coin totals aren't that bad. I'm more just thinking of getting duplicate epics which I've gotten. It's a pretty big slap when it's going "Not only did you not get a coin box, we're giving you half of a coin box".
>>
>>344228150
But it's not a purely accurate comparison to F2P games. F2P model is when items that make your character more powerful are locked behind money or RNG. Overwatch loot boxes are for pure aesthetics. Nothing in the boxes make your heroes play better.
>>
>>344228739

No I did address that. Games are about enjoyment and cosmetics factor into that. Gameplay is FAR more important but that doesn't mean cosmetics are worth nothing. Like no one who dislikes the current lootbox system ever says it's ruined the game for them, it's just a single flaw that's a bit annoying and blizzard has no real incentive to improve it because that would mean making less money.
The F2P comparison is only meant for the tactics involved, not the potency.
>>
>>344229143
Again, considering how much this game has exploded in it's art design, characters, and porn, it's just ridiculous to say cosmetics aren't worth considering period.
If everyone was just a regular WWII solder with regular military lines in generic war zones it wouldn't be remotely as popular for the same gameplay.

shut the fuck up already the system is perfectly fine if you're past the point of getting all those sprays and voice lines
>>
>>344229651
Going too far in the gain direction breaks it in the opposite way. There's earning and there's grinding, individual loot boxes have value but not very much individually. I'm only saying they should come in at say 2x the rate and cost half the money price so that it feels like you're getting the right amount of boxes for what it takes to gain them.
Would you say the opposite, that there's no problem in making them take 10 hours to get and cost 5$ each?
>>

>Never have an opinion, don't try to improve things
You just said it yourself the sprays and voice lines are kinda pointless. Complaining about the system includes saying things like "Why can't we sell sprays and voice lines we don't want to creep closer to the stuff we actually want?"
>>
>>344229859
>if you're past the point of getting all those sprays and voice lines
But you're never past that point dipshit, because there are more sprays+voice lines than there are skins, and because you can get duplicates, you will always et sprays and voice lines. A recent box of mine was 3 sprays I already had and a common skin for Symmetra

>>
>>344231356

You seem to think the rate of loot boxes isn't annoying but the duplicate/coin shit is fuck stupid and could be improved. That's completely fine and what you are and aren't comfortable with. I care more about getting more boxes in general so that at the end of a session you have more than one box to open up for fun and the odds of walking away with only grey grey blue grey at the end of the day is less and that's just me.
It's something you don't like and think could be improved in some way what's wrong with that?

Incorrect. Mercy's legendary skins are pretty great. So are Zenyatta's, Bastion's, Hanzo's Symmetra's, D.va's,McCree's, Reaper's, Reinhardt's, Pharah's epic skins are pretty cool. At the very least, many characters look better in different colour skins

The hypothetical is relevant because it further establishes your view on the value of cosmetics. By answering it you've established that both positive and negative you think cosmetics have almost no real value, which is fine as your opinion but where we fundamentally disagree.

>>344231736
>Once you get the sprays the first time every additional time you get them will be free credits
Yes, and the value of these is what we're arguing over. What, maybe 5 credits? How long before you can get that legendary skin you wanted at 5 credits for every duplicate spray you get?
Why not instead, allow you to sell duplicates for more? Why not remove duplicates entirely and replace them with action money drops. How is getting 25% on a duplicate better than having no duplicates or replacing duplicates with their actual value or more?

Again, we fundamentally disagree on that point because I think the desirability of cosmetics give them some value in a game made so popular by it's artistic design.
If you think they have no value at all then that's fine, but the argument is at an impasse because it's down to one opinion vs another so there's not much point going further there. It's fine to agree to disagree.
>>
>>344233396
But you can't trade them

that argument works for games like TF2 with expensive hats, but all the hats in overwatch are just hats
>>
>>344225742
I miss this so much. No games have any secrets anymore. Dark Souls is the only thing that comes close.
>>
>>344233524
Tradability adds more value to them but I don't think that a lack of tradability invalidates their value. I'll never pay money for a loot box but I still think the cost should be cut in half because 1.20$ is ridiculous.
>>
it's amazing how we've reached the point in time where people will literally go to depths end to defend microtransactions simply because it's cosmetic.

>b-but you don't have to buy them!
microtransactions are cancer, period.
>>
>>344234002
It's war wounds. Microtransactions have been so deeply shitty in the past with F2P and EA blushit that cosmetic only microtransactions understandably look EXTREMELY favorable.
>>
>>344234002
I'll also play devils advocate and say it's possible to have good micro-transactions, just there's little incentive for any company to actually do it.
For example if it were laughably cheaper to buy all the skins, say 10$ gets you every current unlock and loot boxes are more common, they'd be serving the actual positive purpose of the things, spending cash to skip ahead instead of using time.
It's just too tempting for a company to start to tease their playerbase's sense of patience so that they're just a little more inclined to pay up out of frustration rather than need.
>>
>>344234002
>>344234147
You're just on a pointless crusade against microtransactions on principle and it's retarded. I dont think any content should be off limits to a player who cant afford it or simply doesnt want to have to pay extra. I dont think anyone should be able to buy themselves an advantage either.
But what you have here is an online only game, that is intended to be the next big IP for Blizzard, they're expecting it to last for years to come and that will mean constantly adding new content, new maps, new heroes, etc but they have specifically said you will never have to pay for heroes or maps or anything like that, and there's no subscription fee.
The money for this shit has to come from somewhere, do you expect Blizzard to take funds from it's other IPs? Do you think the retail sale of the game alone will cover the costs of sustaining it for years to come?

The only things you can buy in game is a a box of random crap that negligibly alters hero's appearances, why is that an issue? The money to sustain the game isn't going to appear out of thin air
>>
>>344234002
Nit picking and making post bitching about the small things in games is actually the shit killing this industry. Industries have their flaws, but not utilizing the flaws make the flaws nonexcisting.
>>
It's actually ridiculous that Blizzard fanboys defend this shit so much.

The loot crates are one problem, but the game also has less content than most F2P games out there right now. Yet Blizzdrones paid $40 - $60 for it and then proceed to buy crates too.

Also I can't wrap my head around this

Battlefront had a lack of content on release
>Got shat on

Brink had a lack of content on release
>Got shat on

Destiny had a lack of content on release
>Got shat on

Street Fighter V had a lack of content on release

The system is a little flawed for sure, but 'no one should ever have to resort to buying loot' was my point.
Its a byproduct of just playing the game and enjoying it, and I think a majority agrees that its a pretty fair way of distributing these signs of "prestige" and opulence. Cause at the end of the day thats what they are, opulent little trophies you use to 'show off' or be a cool guy.
Is it really so wrong that you put in some work for that kinda stuff? I mean lots of games make you work for prestige an shit.
>>
>>344216380
But nobody is forcing you to buy anything. You can unlock everything by just playing the game, the microtransactions are just there for the spergs who need their character to look a certain way for their POTG screens.
>>
>>344235993
I keep spending my shit the second I get it, you'll probably be on top when they start releasing new stuff.
>>
>>344236089
>'no one should ever have to resort to buying loot'
You're right and I agree with you there. My argument is just I think the current rate is uncomfortable and could be improved. It's nowhere near bad enough to make me want to actually pay or to hamper my enjoyment of the game.
It'd just be nice to have 2-3 boxes at the end of a session to open, rather than 1 that could easily be a grey grey blue grey (with duplicates!).
As for prestige, I'd be fine with getting more boxes but the epic stuff costs more/is rarer. Make the recolors easy to get but the legendaries still come in at the current rate or even rarer.

Never played a Blizzard game in my life. Quick play only got stale after a few weeks and soon after that they had competitive so I don't really care. More importantly competitive is complete shit right now, if anything quick play now seems 10 times better in comparison. Pretty sick of my skill ranking getting fucked because other people are quitting
>win, flatten enemy team
>cry babies rage quit near the end
>Blizzard algorithm: "durr 6v5 isn't fair, we need to reduce the skill you earned!"
>receive less than 10% of what you would've earned if everyone had stayed til the end
>player on your team quits
>lose match
>skill you lose is exactly the same as if you'd lost a fair 6v6 match
>play 10 games where someone quits and you receive less xp
>lose 1 single match under any circumstances, completely wipes out any progress you made
>>
>>344216828
Do you complain about CoD and Battlefield having guns locked behind XP walls?
>>
>>344236143
No one forces you to pay in a F2P game either. It's the same sort of mentality though, teasing your sense of patience so that you're more inclined to pay up. Don't get me wrong though, it's not NEARLY as bad as a F2P game by any respect. It's just that people expect that shit in a F2P game because that's where the money you save from not buying the game actually goes. People feel that paying full price for Overwatch should mean that there's no question that they aren't being manipulated even if only a little bit by the micro transactions. The fact that the whole thing is randomized, duplicates give you even less than just getting a coin box, and no ability to sell stuff you don't want leans further into that mentality of teasing your frustration so you want to just pay and get it over with faster.
It's like adds on on a streaming site. You can pay to get rid of them or be patient and ignore them but the show itself is the same.
>>
>>344227002
Seeing as it needs to be there to be able to see it on other players, I don't get your point.
>>
>>344236949
Like if the loot system were exactly the same but there were no microtransactions, then you could argue that blizzard honestly thinks this is the most enjoyable way to unlock cosmetics. You could argue they're thinking long term or anything like that and maybe they'll improve it in some way if something turns out to be bad like if you don't like getting only 25% for duplicates.
The presence of Microtransactions, and expensive ones at that, means they have an insentive to make the free option intentionally bad because then people will lean more toward giving them money. If there's any problem with the system, ignoring that problem is still a benefit to them in one way.

Well if you havent looked into the system, lvl 1-30 are easy box gets, but after that you need a flat 22000(i think) for every level till 100. Once you hit 100 you'll level back down to 1 where you once again get 30 levels of easy boxs.

I dont know if you already knew this, but its the only thing I can think of that may help.

I wish you the best on the box hunt, anon.
>>
>>344237458
But thats the thing, they're not even charging for cosmetics, you can get literally any of the cosmetics by levelling up, being awarded a loot box of items, and saving in game currency to buy things. If you can't be bothered to level up and earn the box, you can buy some.
Arguing against microtransactions in this particular case is even stupider than complaining cosmetics are behind paywalls

People don't like it, Blizzard is aware of that, which is why literally nothing in Overwatch is, or will be behind a pay wall, it can all be earned, further more there seems to be no plans whatsoever for bonus items that affect gameplay regardless of whether they have to be bought or earned. Literally every additional thing is purely cosmetic and completely attainable simply by playing the game. Why? because people have had enough of microtransactions.

It's not about buying them, especially at the rate they're going you're right, it's terrible impulse control.
It's about how they could be improved in various ways, like just getting rid of duplicates or at least making them as valuable as the regular coin boxes. But that won't ever happen because the existence of a pay option means that anything wrong with the free option only makes pay look better by comparison.
Also anyone who says the loot system at all actually ruins their enjoyment of the game is also crazy, I just think it's a valid nitpick.

>>
>>344239819
You know I actually agree with you on that. I've been nitpicking half the thread but completely agree that what overwatch does have is still one of the best microtransaction systems I've seen. I just don't like how it's still behind the asking price in a game that ignoring the cosmetics, is pretty lacking in other areas. Call it a 2 step forward 1 step back, the current system is quite good and much better than most, but it's very unlikely it'll improve any further for this game. Perhaps on the next one.
>>
>>344240590
>was is voluntary isolation

>>
>>344240876
Yes, it is.

Boxes filled with cosmetics you get effortlessly just by playing. It doesn't even take long to get an assortment of skins for every hero, or for currency.

Not maps, or weapons, or characters.

How can you be so retarded?
>>
>>344240580
You could tweak it in other ways too. Even with the current system i think epic skins are too common. Having more loot box drops in general satisfies my issue of only getting one prize after 8 rounds, but you could also make the higher tier skins cost even more so they're still things that take extra effort to earn.
Hell, you could just make it so that epic drops alone can't be duplicates just so you don't feel cheated on a rare drop, but leave everything below it the same and it'd still be a massive improvement.
>>
>>344216380
It's an unfortunate norm but its nothing new.
Also
You don't have to buy it, everything can be purchased in game, it's all cosmetic and future maps, modes and heroes are free.
It's the lesser of two evil, which most games don't do.

>>344239094
what made you think i read anything in this shitfest of a thread?
>>
>>344241705
Agreed, that's one of the things I think a lot of people miss in these arguments. As much as I've been complaining about the current loot system it both doesn't ruin my fun with the game and is FAR better than what most games in a similar place would do.
My complaints are more just that it's a little frustrating as is and is very unlikely to ever be improved in any way because that would translate into fewer Blizzard bux But yes it's still way better than most.

The biggest problem with paying for loot boxes is that you can't just get what you want, you have to pay for a CHANCE to get what you want. So is the current rate of exp gain
So is all the skins and voice clips bloating your intake
So is duplicates being a thing
So is duplicates giving you even less than just coin boxes
So is ever getting a duplicate epic

They're all things that could be improved a little more to make it look less like they're trying to needle you for cash but you'll find plenty of people in the thread who want to ignore all that. The current system is very good, could still be better without going overboard in many ways.

The rates could be better. Half the exp needed for free loot boxes, or just fix the shittier things like not being able to buy currency or everything about duplicates and then the free system is comfy enough that it doesn't tease you so much. Cut the cost of buying the boxes in half too because over a dollar for a random cosmetic box is insane.
Games run on enjoyment and cosmetics are obviously desirable.
The whole grind vs pay system is something we're used to in F2P games because it's like stream site ads. You watch for free with minor annoyance or you pay a little more and save your time. But since Overwatch had a flat pay rate we shouldn't have to deal with tactics that are clearly trying to manipulate your patience like ONLY getting loot boxes no matter which way you go.
It shouldn't feel like a grind to get loot boxes, they should feel like appropriate rewards for how long it takes to get them (and since you can still get 3 greys and a blue, you should get at least 2-3 per average session so you reasonably have something to look forward to). And the pay option should be cheap enough that you you wouldn't feel stupid for actually getting some. I'd potentially get some on a whim if they were like 50 cents each, over a dollar is insane. A higher pay price is all the more incentive to make free a little more frustrating.

>>344222314
Canada, New Zealand and Australia use $ as well. It's $2 for one crate in Australia. This is technically a discount for buying in bulk.
>>
>>344255884
I'm only getting about half of it but it's the part where people are indeed actually defending the current box system using logic like:
>It keeps new content free
Then why did we have to pay up front?
>Who cares it's cosmetics
Then why not make them cost less if they don't matter so much?
>Stop complaining it won't change anything
Why just silently accept something that's bad and could be better?

Most of the reasons in this thread could easily be reversed with the same logic but people still steadfastly defend the microtransactions.
It's only rarely someone defends the system itself as it is like "I find the current exp gain rate to be satisfying between time it takes to get them and the value of a box". Which is fine as an argument. It's not "stop disliking something", it's not "deal with it", it's not "things have been worse so just accept the lesser of two evils" but an argument "I actually like how it currently is".
>>
>>344255884
it means blizzard hired some very, very savvy marketers and visual design artists to animate and advertise overwatch

and their timing was absurdly perfect as well, dropped right on top of both battleborn and dirtybomb and completely blew away even the slightest hint of competition right away

and then the tracer pose thing conveniently happens amidst all the negative controversy over blizzard telling fans "you don't actually want this thing that you're up here asking us for right now". which nobody has mentioned at all since then.

so yeah whoever runs their marketing division right now definitely seems to know what they are doing.
>>
>>344255989
No one is playing only for loot boxes, but they're something that could be done better. The same argument could be used if it took twice as much exp to get them or even if they were pay only. The point is that it's something that could reasonably be more satisfying without going overboard. The current system still edges into "intentionally frustrate to get more money" instead of "You already paid so this system is balanced to reward you just for play, only pay money if you honestly don't have the time to play enough"
>>

>tracer butt
Actually blizzard was shockingly right on that one. They said that the over the shoulder pose was too boring for character as energetic as tracer. They removed it but replaced it with an 'in character' butt pose which was actually an improvement.

But on marketing, I still can't understand how they could gather so much popularity on characters and personality but have almost no story at all inside the actual game. Even something like just keeping their character videos in some sort of bio tab so it's there.
>>
>>344256321
my guess is
>why did we have to pay up front
to cover the the initial cost of development since the game has been made and scrapped over and over, blizzard isn't gonna just let micro transactions bump that back into the green. That's how business is done. The wishful answer is to keep out shitters who just want to jump in and shit on everything because they have nothing to lose.
>then why not make cosmetics cheaper than they are if they don't matter
because several reasons, like giving people goals to work for since the community asked for a progression system. If everything was cheap, then you'd only play for 20 hours and got everything you can get. That's no good.
Also you got to start somewhere, they could be more expensive, they could have been cheaper and you can still argue that they're not cheap enough. They're priced the way they are because why not?
>Why just silently accept something that's bad and could be better?
because your opinion of something that's bad isn't universal. if you actually like the gameplay, then all of these complaints are really pointless since you'd be enjoying the game instead of worrying about microtransactions and skins. I've got like 40 hours of gameplay and I've gotten a legendary skin for almost all over the heros from drops or gold. I completely forgot buying crates were even a thing until this thread even. I've gotten a shit load of crates just from enjoying the game and it baffles me how hard it is for people to let the retards spell their own doom while they buy future bullshit for the rest of us who only dropped $40 on release.
>>
>>344256820
It was all blatantly set up, the whole fucking thing just felt totally staged. the initial post which started the whole thing read like self-parody of the most stereotypical sjw nonsense, just lots of wordswordswords

every single reply disagreed with the OP and made fun of them for being fucking stupid, yet the pose was changed anyway. and then just a little while later, haha psych guys we changed it and it still shows her butt ;^)

all of a sudden, WAVES of support wash over blizzard, thread after thread of OH WELL I GUESS BLIZZARD WERE THE HEROES AFTER ALL GUYS!!! and SJW BTFO LOL!!! and so on. the fact the new pose was from a sexy pinup was also perfect because it is another easy thing to point out as proof that they 'weren't conforming' to PC culture

before the whole incident they were being shat on by the entire internet over the whole "you think you do but you don't" thing at Blizzcon, and how anti-consumer that response was, and how for just a moment people realized blizzard was not their friend and was not out to do anything for their fan's benefit. but then the tracer thing distracts the internet perfectly, nostalrius discussion dwindles and then completely vanishes, blizzard re-adds the pose, are seen as "the good guys" again, and now here people are, even defending lootcrates

>>
>>344256546
The more you play, the less you end up caring about the boxes. That's just how it seems for the lot of us. I've gotten a good load of skins just from playing. If you're getting frustrated with the amount, try not dropping out after every game you play. You get more exp for consecutive games. You also can group up with someone you gel with, get an extra boost. After you get a few legendary skins, you'll stop craving them since they just don't make a substantial difference to the player in game. It's really the smallest issue you can have with the game right now and it's just not really an issue to begin with unless you're only like 2 hours in.

If you literally git gud, then your problems will actually go away.
>>
>>344256343
>and their timing was absurdly perfect as well, dropped right on top of both battleborn and dirtybomb and completely blew away even the slightest hint of competition right away

That's because both those games were rushed out to try and pre-empt overwatch. Blizzard is a massive target for industrial espionage. And it's one of the main reasons game developers never talk to the press, the second you show "hey look, we're making this" people try and copy it and cut you off.

For the last one, I just would prefer to get crates more frequently since the present system feels too restrictive. It's a nitpick, I'm having plenty of fun with the game but that doesn't mean I can't point out flaws when I see them. I've gotten an epic duplicate before and that's pretty bullshit, especially when the reward then is only 25% the tier value.
If you're comfortable with the current system then honestly that's good for you, I just don't have the same opinion and think it could be tweaked to feel a little less nickle n dimey.
>>
>>344257672
But blizzard are actively using tactics that free 2 play mobile games use all the time, why do you think lines and sprays exist? to pad the shit out of loot boxes and make it less likely to get the "good stuff"

It's an aggressive psychological bombardment technique, the trickle feed you get while levelling is made to frustrate and tempt you. And this is "fine" in free games, that's the price you pay to play the game, but overwatch charges, it shouldn't be using these techniques.
>>
>>344215686
If the game keeps getting updates because retarded whales throw money at it, I'm fine with it. Why wouldn't I?
>>
>>344257740
You're right and I do have a majority of the stuff I wanted, but it's just a nitpick like how there's next to no actual story in the game. The game as it is is very fun, but there's enough there that it could have been better. Like just having less of a slog that first time you get to the 22000 limit so you don't need to wait it out for them to eventually catch up.

BLIZZARD DOESN'T NEED OUR MONEY TO COVER ANY FUCKING COST UNDER THE SUN.
>>
>>344257961
I'd argue that sprays and voice lines have more than one purpose as well. You get some padding, but that's also your main coin income at later levels. By the time you get that first star, you just start getting a shit load of coins because of all your dupes. Now you can buy the shit you want.

Once you get everything you want, you're not gonna feel the urge to play anymore and well blizzard's gonna try to avoid that like the clap.
>>
>>344257961
Right, that's kinda my point too. The current system is FAR better than most free to play games but the sensation of them still lingers in it. You shouldn't have to deal with duplicates or ONLY get random boxes even if you pay cash. The stink of the F2P model is the acknowledgement that all these little nitpicks in an otherwise good game will never actually be fixed because the worse the system is without instilling outrage, the more cash it rakes in, so why improve it?
Idealy, getting the cosmetics should be satisfying enough that you don't worry about the nickel and dime tactics and the pay model ONLY comes into play if you actually are one of those people who only gets a little game time a day and needs the boost to compensate the time.

It'd be nice though if duplicates weren't even worse than just getting coin boxes which are already fairly disappointing. Having an epic duplicate is kinda a slap in the face early on.

I'm in favor of making loot box and coin rewards better, but at the same time making legendaries much more expensive. So early and mid time in the life you start raking in the commons but then you start saving up for the rare stuff.
As for longevity, seriously just make more skins. It sounds stupid but if nothing else they can toss in more recolors to buy time to make more legendaries.

Their moba was also a fucking failure too, hearth stone was a big break in recent years. A conglomerate like blizzard isn't going to just get by with just hearthstone either, they had a failed mmo that sucked a lot of money. even if they still had money up to their ears, they still could have had more if that mmo didn't get fucked.

Plus thank fucking god overwatch isn't F2P, I don't want to fucking just play hanzo or some shit in hopes of unlocking a road hog. F2P is shit.

um dude have you been living under a rock, there's this game called csgo, maybe you haven't heard of it, but
>>
>>344258856
No reason you can't acknowledge it as a nice little bonus that also uses F2P tactics. No one once in this thread has said the loot crates ruined the game for them. We're complaining about the loot crate system because that's the thread topic, what did you expect?

Our Console friends, Anon.

>>344258856
Have you considered that customisation is more important to some people than pure game mechanics? you do not possess the only way to enjoy games. I don't even play overwatch, I ain't paying that price, but I played in beta and it was fucking clear as day what Blizzard were aiming for.

And it doesn't matter how much you "don't care" these psychological attacks do function on you, these are extensively researched and well understood by companies that make free 2 play games. It doesn't ruin overwatch by any stretch, but it is a mark against the game, blizzard's business department should not be allowed to avoid the criticism it deserves for putting such a scummy thing into their game.
>>
>>344259039
Diablo is not even close to being a failure it's a very well played game and it sold like crazy.

same with HoTS, blizzard have not had a commercial failure.
>>
>>344258856
Why would pointing out a flawed system without going overboard and saying it lessens the gameplay be thinking like a sheep, but holding the opinion "Don't try to change something bad if it's not the biggest factor" is having an open mind? If you think the current system is actually good then that's fine, but you're advocating "It's bad but just ignore it" as a good idea.
>>
>>344259115
Because it's a stupid fucking complaint about shit that doesn't matter.
People wanted progression and Blizzard gave them the best fucking progression system that can be made without affecting game balance.
The one and only reason people are mad is because there exists the option to buy loot boxes because that's what F2P games do and then red fucking letters flash in their minds and their brains stop functioning because
>F2P IS EVIL! NICKEL AND DIMING! MICROTRANSATIONS! AAAAAAH
Literally the mentality on display.
There is no solid, logical reason to disapprove of this system in this entire thread so far or any other thread before it.

>im 16 and i just watched the h3 video and think i know what im talking about episode

csgo lets you trade skins for money and gamble them on a fucking website. you cant compare the two at all

also, i am level 120 in OW never bought a loot box and have a legendary(s) for almost every character
>>
>>344259450
>People wanted progression and Blizzard gave them the best fucking progression system that can be made without affecting game balance.

Or they could just put them behind achievements and you unlock them by playing the game rather than rolling randomly and have the option to buy them.

You're defending a technique that is designed to whittle down your resolve until you spend money. And it does fucking work. No fuck off. Blizzard deserve criticism for this.
>>
>>344258632
I'd imagine that there'll probably be better tier of legendaries later on that cost more and have a lower drop rate. That'll give retards the urge to buy boxes and everyone who's already got a lot of legendaries a reason to save their coin.

I'd personally that they just match the legendary dupe coins with the legendary coin rewards or something. It'll still feel like a slap, but that's just one of those things games just have as part of them. If you buy an item from the raffle house in an mmo and then get it later from a rare drop, that nigga ain't gonna get yo money back.
>>
>>344259039
the F2P system wouldn't lock characters because the game's designed around being able to switch. In it's current state it would just make everything cost money and loot boxes much harder to get for free. It wouldn't change the gameplay, but think about how much duller it would be if that many more victory screens and play of the game windows just looked exactly the same because of the customization being that much rarer.
>>
>>344259039
nice deflection but that's not what i said. i said they don't need the consumer to "cover the cost" of fucking anything they do, there is absolutely no excuse to plug freemium shit like lootcrates into the game unless blizz doesn't think the game would stay relevant without some kind of addictive component to keep you playing nonstop. hence, gambling-lite via lootcrates.

>lootcrates aren't gambling cuz you get a prize no matter whut!!!

sprays and quotes are consolation prizes, as others have explained, they are filler. what people want are the skins. when you buy ten crates and you don't get the skin you want, none of those quotes or whatever will mean jack-fuck

>>
>>344259276
It certainly wasn't a failure, but it sure did miss that window with that horrible launch rep. Everyone was expecting the kind of shit you're seeing happen with overwatch, just obsession out the wazoo. Instead we got the whole "holy shit, single player games tied to the internet?" and that just tanked its reputation.
>>
>>344259670
>>344259714
Them actually needing that month is the real problem, git gud.

And if by some freak of chance that's actually the case then yeah, it is a problem. Just like how bayo had the bad (press this button to not instantly die) QTEs that are actual detriments to the game. And guess what? People hated those, and they were gone in 2 which made the game better. Platinum figured out by W101 that the strength of QTEs is to introduce more spectacle but making them difficult just isn't fun or impressive. A flawed system in a good game was improved for the future.
>>
>>344259551
>Or they could just put them behind achievements and you unlock them by playing the game
That is a potentially valid option but it is not necessarily a better one because then you would have matches where people are chasing achievements rather than playing the objectives.
I'd say the existing system is better because you gain loot boxes at a constant steady rate by just playing the game and it includes a mechanism for bypassing the RNG to get the thing you actually want with credits.
>You're defending a technique that is designed to whittle down your resolve until you spend money

Not them but you could still make it work well. Lean points more toward just getting a victory and take out the random aspect.
The point is not about removing the progression system entirely, but making it less annoying.
And even if the tactics don't bother you, they make the game less for being there. Maybe not by much, maybe not in a manner that bothers you but why would you want to argue against something that would improve the game for people that do care and not affect people that don't?
>>

>lootcrates aren't gambling cuz you get a prize no matter whut!!!
Where'd I say anything like this? You really expect a company like blizzard is just going to stop charging for shit because "they just don't need to"? Why doesn't blizzard just house your family and pay for your retard medicine, they don't need that money, who the fuck cares?

It's a business, they need to make money because they want to pay for expensive shit later. They don't want to spend the money they have so they spend the money they're making. Just because it doesn't make sense to you doesn't mean that it doesn't make sense.

Cosmetics dont affect gameplay, some people are willing to shell out for a skin, this has been happening on the main stream for a while.

Tribes Ascend gave you better weapons for either 350 hours of grinding or 10 bucks, which system sounds better to you?
>>
>>344260683

>>
>>344260379

because (this may be hard to hear) the world does not actually revolve around you.

>>
>>344260935
If you want it to be better, by all means, want it. But it's not a negative system. I'm not negatively impacted whatsoever by this having bought only the base game.
>>
>>344260954
the thread is about lootcrates, yeah. but that guy (or you, I don't fucking know) refer to the process as a grind. The gameplay is the process, so if the game is so tedious that it's just a chore to get the items you want, then why even play in the first place? If items aren't just shit that fall in your lap while you play the game naturally, then why play the game? It's just going to be a cycle of cynicism and loathing over the chore that is grinding for items.

Just don't play if the game isn't entertaining enough to make you forget you even want skins.
>>
>>344260961
because I've explained it several times I'll give a single example.

I think epic skins are really good and want one.
I get a loot crate.
The crate has an epic.
The epic is a duplicate
Duplicates are worth even less than just getting a box of coins
I think this system could be better.
There is no incentive for blizzard to improve because the more frustrating the free system is, the more people will pay for more boxes faster.

>>
>>344261240
when you add a system where the reward for playing the game is the grab bag, then the grab bag becomes your incentive to play

which for many people, fundamentally changes their perception of the game, because they secretly just want the instant gratification. i bet tons of people don't even *play* OW but just HAVE to get that ADORBS d.va skin OMG

those kinds of people absolutely exist and there are a lot of them, and this game is preying on them.

if the lootcrates stopped at $20 even, it wouldn't be so bad, but it goes up to, what, $50+? you can just press one button and throw away that much money, and out of that you may get a handful of useless things you kinda like and a big pile of crap you don't care about in the slightest

but you'll open a single crate in that $50 pile and get your legendary aforementioned adorbs d.va skin and that will tell your brain "yeah, that was totally worth it"

numerous forms of gambling also work this way. preying on a common psychological reaction most often witnessed among gamblers.

This thread is about complaining about the parts that are still trying to pry open your wallet. It's been said several times that Overwatch is still better than just about any other mictrotransaction system that's been out, but it has it's own flaws still.
People however are legitimately defending these flaws by saying "It's only cosmetic" or "stop paying attention to the microtransactions and just play the game"
Which actually is the shitty logic following the slippery slope.
Overwatch is 2 steps forward and 1 step back, it's a legitimate improvement, but people some how are defending that one step back along with the 2 steps forward instead of just separating them.

>>
>>344262325
you're still missing the vital point that you are essentially either paying to unlock or are playing to unlock content you have already paid for - your money when you paid the initial price was accounted for Blizzard to be able to put out another product within a product so you would have a reason to spend more money

this doesn't end you know, as long as you keep arguing that this isn't bad practice they'll keep looking for ways to sell off more parts of the game or make people pay money because no one is telling them to stop least of all the people that are supporting the game

there has never been a better time to be a full blown jude when it comes to entertainment and video game marketing and development, people are just eating your shit up without a critical thought

never played WoW myself, but i think the P2W shit is disgusting. i'm still willing to give them the benefit of the doubt with overwatch though (blizz has said in the past that all future non-cosmetic content will be free, iirc), but i'm jumping ship asap when/if the microtransactions leak into actual gameplay-affecting content
>>
>>344263505
then you should get out now before it's too late!

oh no! I hope it's not too late!?

No really though, I'll call you a retard for thinking that they'd even need to just dump out paid for guns, but if you're absolutely positive that they'll do that, then you should really stop playing and avoid giving blizzard your support. Everyone else will follow suit if that's true and only retards who paid will keep it going. By then there'll be a another game out and you'll be ok.
>>
>>344263359
Literally ALL content in this game is available for free. ALL future content will be available for free.

All thats in the loot crates are some sprays and cosmetic skins lol who the fuck cares. Is this game about skill and fun or about doing a fashion show?!
>>
>>344263674
>Content is locked behind gameplay time spent playing
If it took 20 games to get one loot box then you could say the same thing and you'd definitely be being tricked. It's a persuasion tactic. Keep them free enough that it seems innocent but space them out enough that paying money looks tempting. The problem is that if you have no intention of paying money anyway, that spacing out becomes needless padding and less fun then if the system were balanced around money not being in the equation at all.
>>344263307
I've given my reason many times already. The currency of a game is enjoyment and desirable cosmetics are part of that enjoyment. Just because it's not as bad as paying for gameplay doesn't mean it's not bad in it's own right. Overwatch is a game that exploded in popularity before people could even play just by the artistic design and the characters themselves, to say that cosmetics don't possess any value is insane, they make the game more fun for many players. Just like how if the game were just a military shooter game with drab colors it would tank like crazy.
>>
>>344262921

>pregnant

anon plz
>>
>People ITT actually defending it

Are you fuckers serious? You know that video games have given players alt costumes and cosmetics for free in the past, right? You know they were ALL free, included content before someone decided to jew them out, right? You know Blizzard doesn't need this kind of cash shop to keep the game open? The massive influx of sales did that for them already. The only reason it exists is to jew you.

>But I don't care about features being denied to me

That's fine you dumb little shit, but don't act like it's okay just because you're apathetic to it. It's still a shitburger move.
>>
>>344263685
not that guy but I think the inclusion of both the level boosts in WoW and the loot crates in overwatch are just for those who just don't want to play videogames all the time but are the kind of people who go "fuck waiting, my friends who played way more than me has got cool shit, I want cool shit too!" so much in blizzard's face that they just went "sure why not?".

For some reason, it keeps needing to be said. That shit's just retard muzzles, retards these days rather spend money than playing the game. You get shit like artists who get all their work done within the first 30% of the development cycle, so they just pump out retard traps so they can stay on the payroll. That's the most common reason I know of, I'm sure there's a little bit of that here too.

People just don't want to listen to each other, yeah it's kind of a bummer and it's a little bit tempting, but so is a lot of dumb shit. Being an adult is knowing when to stop being a pussy and refuse a craving every now and again. There's real back and forth going on in this thread, it's just people ignoring each other and repeating themselves. I'd rather the thread just close at this point because it's just breeding retardation at this point.

Are you really stupid enough to equate cosmetics in an FPS with a games entire aesthetic and art design? Putting crates like this in a $40 game is generally ridiculous but so is giving a shit about stuff like hats in TF2 and skins in CS:GO. If that's how you have fun you might as well play that Kim Kardashian mobile game honestly.
>>
>>344263505
>just take at look at your fucking beloved WoW, you can literally p2w yourself

Oh yeah... you can pay money to levle to 100. When there's multiple guides telling you how to stack exp boosts to get to 100 in a few days. Yeah great p2w there.

Lemme know when blizzard lets me buy mythic raid gear and elite pvp gear from the shop.

moron

But you dont?... Only idiots with zero self control and money to waste buy them.
You can get whatever you want by just playing the game, it just takes a bit of time. And also they're purely cosmetic.
Why do you care how idiots spend their money, anon?
>>

>riot adds xp boost for real money
>"fucking p2w, you get advantage over other players"

>blizzard adds instant lvl 100 for real money which is even worse
>"i-it doesn't matter!!!"

You can't make this shit up
>>
So if they remove micro-transactions entirely and made it so you can only obtain skins by earning a loot crate every level, would it suddenly be okay? Would you be willing to play the game the exact same way you could've if you simply ignored an option you didn't like?

If you don't have enough time to get the skins you like or play the game; either you don't have fun with the game and it's not for you, you really need to manage your time better, or you're shit out of luck because your job is demanding. Deal with it.
>>
>>344263551
no its also bad, just because one is shit and the other vomit doesn't make the vomit edible

only thing worse than blizzard fanboys are valve fanboys
>>
>>344264226
>You know that video games have given players alt costumes and cosmetics for free in the past, right

I have over 50 skins.including legendaries and I haven't spent a single cent over $40 for the retail price of the game. You can't explain that.

>riot adds exp boosters
>smurfs prove that their skill can destroy people who have higher levels than them

>blizzard adds instant max level boost
>players find ways to reach max level in a only a few days
>level boost doesn't give you the best raid or pvp gear

I love the idiots who slap p2w argument on things they have no fucking understanding of.

Again let me know when that "p2w" blizzard boost gives you all the best gear in the game.

moron
>>
>>344266457
p2w = can get advantage over other players just by paying real money
both of them are p2w faggot
>>
>>344266604
What advantage is the exp booster in lol? Level doesn't mean much when smurfs can kill unskilled players.

And what does the p2w of level boost in wow get you? Does it beat bosses for you? Does it let you win pvp? Does it give the best gear for money?
>>
>>344266945
I know you are just baiting so here's your (You)
>>
>>344267048
I know you can't counter the argument. (Me)

Learn the what p2w actually is what what it applies to before you try and make an argument.
>>
You OW haters really grasp at the tiniest things, don't you?
>>
>>344267175
again, you get advantage over other non-paying players
that's by definition p2w
>>
>>344215686
they take inspiration in our valve overlord.
may gabe guidance bring hapiness to blizzard
>>
>>344267265
What's the advantage though? You haven't made an argument aganist my counters. Smurfs, skilled players, can kill others with higher level accounts. What advatage does the exp booster give over skill?

What advantage does boosting to max level in wow give you? What does it give you over the person who is in elite pvp gear or mythic raiding gear?

Where's that win that paid for when others are still ahead and better than them?

no one sane buys the boxes. you get a level per hour, that's more than enough to get what you want

Will there be any way to earn or purchase the origins and black widowmaker skins?

I bought the $40 dollar verion, but there is no way to upgrade.
>>
>>344258757
You can trade stuff in tf2, you drop the chests and can get profit for them.
Basically TF2 is FREE so having microtransactions is justified.
>>
I'd rather have purely cosmetic microtransactions than paid dlc maps.
Not to mention the crate system in overwatch is a million times better than any other game with crates.
>>
I honestly don't get the boner people have for Overwatch.

It just feels like a very shallow casual shooter that lacks content. I played in the Beta and was already bored after that.
>>
>>344218052
The 5 origins skins. Reaper, Tracer, 76, Bastion and Pharah have them.
>>
>>344262289
Or you just play for an hour or two and get it for free.

Wouldn't work, the skins show up as owned either way. Only thing that would prove it is a gif/video of him actively going from Noire Widow to Reaper's tab and not having Blackwatch Reyes.

You faggots are delusional. In your "golden age" of video games nobody fixed anything. You would be lucky to get a patch.
>But muh games shipped perfectly and there were no balance problems or bugs
That's fucking bullshit, maybe one out of a thousand. People just dealt with it. No we get constant support and this is how it gets paid. One up front cost is not going to provide years of support
>>
>>344218818
>Why the fuck would someone want to wait for fucking content? That's fucking retarded. Imagine having to play 100 games in dota to unlock a new hero

Imagine having to wait until you're level 60 to start raiding.
Or imagine that you have to wait until you have the appropriate gear to do a certain raid.
>>
>>344215686

There is no reason to buy them. You don't even hardly get to see the skins you get out of them anyway. I dropped hundreds in LoL, but won't spend a dime in OW because they just give it to you for leveling up.

If the game was 3rd person I might be tempted, but for me there really is no point. Just like hats in tf2.
