There's no thread and this game is hype.
Free on PS+ so I'm surprised there isn't more buzz like how the PS4 sounds when running it

>>344219385
It doesn't do that too often for me. The only other game that does that is Arkham Knight.
>>
>>344219325
I think they fucked up on the boss order personally, The Line is a spike and then it dulls down again until The Song

If they put The Scale and The Hand before The Line it'd make more sense
>>
>>344219514
It only really does it if I idle for a while on a game but for some reason on Furi it does it a whole ton

I like the aesthetic, bullet hell games and boss rushes so this is pretty much going to be my favourite game for a while, it's pretty neat
>>
>>344218825
They aren't bosses. They are chapters. Chapter 7 is the one the Voice "defeats" and chapter 11 is the field you walk in for the credits.

>>
>>344219908
The Star for the climactic end and The Edge for the gameplay

>>344219778
Bullets hell/hack n slash game. Only bosses. Really hard, shit graphics, still looks stylish and cool tough.

If you get angry easily on games, let this one pass.

It's like a mix between samurai jack and killer7.

Most people don't look for bullet hell hybrids as their first action game. I don't even know what you mean by action, that's a pretty broad term.
>>
>>344220539
Yeah he's really easy but the fact he locked you into the dueling phase for all of it, along with the perspective change at the end made it feel a lot more unique and fun
>>
>>344219908
The Edge is just a cool fight
The Burst is a good fight too

The Beat is a jobber and is a waste of time
>>
>>344220618
>>344220604

>>
>>344220234
>all those bullets flying as well
Thanks
I suck but this game is enjoyable as a PS+ Title.
>>
>>344220728
From what The Voice said we knew The Beat would job hard but I didn't think she'd just stop fighting altogether
>>
Does anybody else feel like the boss quality dipped hardcore at the last couple bosses? It sorta felt like they ran out of money or something.

The final boss in particular was pretty disappointing, but maybe that's because I enjoyed the swordplay more than the bullet hell parts. I was also expecting a little bit more from the story. They set it up like stuff was gonna be answered at the end and I guess some stuff was answered, but it still left me with a sort of sour taste in my mouth. Felt just a little bit lazy to set up all this intrigue but never really give it a proper payoff.

Overall though, really fun game, maybe a little expensive at 25 dollars but I'd definitely pick it up on a sale.
>>
>>344220882
She actually does no damage at the end. I was seeing what would happen if I just left it, but nothing. She does no real damage

Wish The Voice was a boss.

>>344220703
That's true. I loved his stage. I just wanna chill on a pink beach with purple sea
>>344220728

>>
Is this another Dark Souls in that people think the game is hard but they just suck at it? Like I said babbies first acshun game. Don't praise it for a difficulty that doesn't exist, and without that it's artsy indie trash.
>>
>>344221089

THE BEAT/JOBBER
>>
>>344221041
Did you fight the secret end boss? The MC is an alien sent to conquer earth, instead he's captured and set up in an insane prison because everything he touches dies.
>>
>>344221051
Maybe if the game gets a sequel or some form of DLC
>>
>>344221041

I can see they were trying to boil the main parts of the gameplay—bullet hell and sword action— with the Edge and the Star while giving the Beat some platformer variety. All in all, I agree with you on the story's end. It wasn't very satisfying for me and the build-up that you go through by battling everyone doesn't really payoff.
>>
>>344221089
I liked all of the bosses but for some reason something about The Strap really makes me dislike her
>>
>>344221041
Nah I mean, I know all that stuff, it just felt like there was more of a story to tell. A lot of the stuff you can figure out with context clues but I really wanted to know more about the backstory.

but after 2 bosses on Furi Mode I'm already tired of it

I kind of wished that fight was longer. I know it wasn't supposed to be a "real" fight but I like the pseudo-platforming sections. I'm also a little disappointed that The Star is a pure bullethell, I was hoping for something more dynamic like The Burst or even The Beat.
>>
>>344233015
just dodge and never stop firing bullets at her.
>>
>>344233015
Try charging your shot to maximum capacity when she stands still or if you want to stop some of her telegraphed attacks, shoot a slightly charged shot to cut her off. Also when she is about to dive into you, charge a shot and hit her directly to stop her dive, with the highest charge dropping her to the ground.
>>
>>344233015
Become the danmaku.
Don't worry, I hate her too.

>>
>>344233015
Mostly just shoot basic bullets at her the first few rounds. Melee her when shes on stage (she didn't do much in melee range but it happens) also parry her dive attack for an auto stun melee cutscene thing (later rounds only on the third try)

Look for pillars on her final round and don't fuck up the finishing blow because if you die where her protective bubble normally is it auto kills all your lives
>>
Why is the old man so fucking annoying?

>>344235149
Because you're bad at the game.

Different anon. My interpretation of the titles:

>The Chain
Ball and chain, being in chains, prisons, etc. Pretty straightforward.

>The Strap
Again fairly obvious. She's strapped to that...weird, mobile gurney thing. Also the whole regenerating cell speaks more to a prison of restraint rather than punishment/subjugation

>The Line
First not-so-obvious one. I'm guessing it has to do with the way he conceptualizes time as a fixed "line," i.e. a preordained path, destiny, etc.

>The Scale
He's some kind of weird fish-man so there's that. Also kinda reaching, but maybe scale also refers to the "scale" of the destruction caused by the Stranger?

>The Hand
This one honestly has me stumped. I could speculate but I don't want to make a fool of myself.

>The Song
A possible allusion to the siren's song? Something that sort of lulls you into calmness, possibly for untoward purposes

>The Voice
Bunny-guy literally has a microphone. I think he's supposed to somewhat represent the Stranger's conscience, or internal monologue, or something along those lines.

>The Burst
BULLET. HELL. Also maybe something about how she's kind of fiery/unpredictable and throws herself into these cuhrazy life-or-death games just for the thrill.

>The Edge
Sword-guy. Also I got stuck on him for a while so I heard a lot of his dialogue; there's supposed to be some kind of parallel/reflection between you and him -- like you're both these unstoppable killing machines but one is ostensibly "good" and the other "evil."

>The Beat
Kinda makes sense but it's hard to explain. The whole acoustic/musical motif she has going on sort of speaks to a pulse or vivacity that goes along with her youthful demeanor.

>The Star
ayy lmao
>>
Holy fuck, finally

Not really a fan of how the game works. I hate that you heal after each phase, and KOs don't feel painful enough as losses to me. You just get back up, whatever. And regaining lives is even stupider.

I beat 2 bosses so far and got 3 KOs in total, no game over yet. I would restart from scratch and try for no KOs but eh.

It's okay.

I liked The Line's prison a hell of a lot
The Strap's had great atmosphere too

To be honest, the walking sim portions of this game were all really well executed. Top notch atmosphere and buildup to the hectic fights.
>>
So, correct me if I'm wrong here but

The Song wanted to be with his daughter, but he knew so long as The Rider was there, he would never be free of his duty. So he breaks out The Rider, and The Rider slaughters his way down until he is out. With The Rider free, The Song can finally be with his daughter.

Also, I assume there is some way to fight The Song? Checking my practice list, I'm missing the #11 fight. Do you get that fight by NOT fucking off to space? Either way, that's a shame. I don't feel like beating the game again just to get an extra fight. It was fun, but not worth the hassle of a second playthrough.

The Voice.

I think the way the prison was designed, the gates literally wouldn't open unless the jailers died. Which is a kind of weird way to design a prison, when you think about it.

He wanted to see his daughter again so he released and armed the only man capable of killing the best.

>>344235336
The Hand is prolly directly referring to being the hand of a higher power, like the term "right-hand man." Referring to somebody as another's hand in literature often implies that they're somebody who acts for a higher power.
>>
>>344250115
You're an immortal Alien Horseman of the Apocalpyse, it makes no sense for you to side with your captors at the End. Rabbithead doomed his entire planet so he can see his kid again
>>
>>344250115
Why would leaving him in there doom the planet? The Voice wanted to see his daughter, no matter the consequences, I thought. They knew he was an alien (it's brought up in some boss dialogues) but the game didn't reveal it fully until the end obviously. But The Voice was talking about "having hope" when he spared The Song, that maybe he wouldn't destory the earth.
>>
Last boss is a fucking piece of shit, prove me wrong.

I literally stopped at her second-to-last phase. I wasn't having fun. It was just difficult, and difficulty without fun is meaningless. If I wanted to play a bullet hell I'd play a bullet hell, and I sure as fuck don't want to play a bullet hell. Previous bosses had bullet hell elements, of course, but it was bearable because it was well-paced with melee sections.

But the last boss...I don't want to play fucking touhou.

How could they fuck the up the final boss so hard in a boss rush game?
>>
>>344250673
there were bullet hell elements through the entire game, it's basically what you've been doing the entire time without parrying.
>>
>>344250438
Yeah but if he'd stayed in the prison do you really think the mothership would just stay dormant forever/fuck off somewhere else? They'd probably just send another guy. Releasing him at least provided a chance that he'd spare/protect the planet.

I literally stopped at his second to last phase. I wasn't having fun. It was just difficult, and difficulty without fun is meaningless. If I wanted to play an action game I'd play an action game, and I sure as fuck don't want to play and action game. Previous bosses had action elements, of course, but it was bearable because it was well-paced with bullet hell sections.

But The Edge... I don't want to fucking play Dark Souls.

How could they fuck up a boss so hard in a boss rush game?
>>
How does it run on PS4? I could get it for free on there or PC.
>>
>>344250881
I played it through tired, I thought that's what The Voice meant when he said "I didn't expect that from you", or was he referring to the hesitation? Either way it supports the same idea.
>>
>>344250927
not about difficulty. It was just a badly-designed boss. LITERALLY a bullet hell.

I spent more time on Sniper girl than I did on the final boss, because I actually enjoyed the Sniper chick fight (except the last phase, which was also a fucking bullet hell). I got to the 2nd-to-last phase on mothership. With another ~1hr I could've beaten it, but it literally wasn't fun any more.
>>
>>344217225
she wasn't that bad, the third boss is fucking ridiculous though
>>
>>344251014
The Edge was just one in a series of fights. I don't even personally consider him to be part of the "main" jailers, just kind of a random "and now for something completely different!"

The final boss should've been a culmination of all the previous stuff you've done, plus maybe a few surprises. The Burst makes a better final boss than either The Beat or The Star.
>>
>>344251276
Technically it's an optional boss anyway. It might been a lot better if you had to face another "Rider" in a clone fight or something but I still thought it was fine.

It's clickbait, it has to be. There are several games that are MUCH worse about shaming you for playing on easier difficulties.

Also if I remember right there's a later section where she complains about how the game "punishes" you because The Chain shittalks you. Granted, his dialogue is pretty tryhard/edgy, but it only becomes grating if you keep getting your shit kicked in, which I have a hard time fathoming because I fucked up pretty much that entire fight and still only lost like two lives.

I disagree with this completely. Granted, I'm not exactly a bullethell veteran, but I'm pretty sure the general strategy is to try and find geometric patterns in the bullets. So, big picture, not small picture.

Especially in this game, almost all the bullethells have very regular patterns and the game rewards you for taking the time to learn patterns even if you take damage/lose a life in the process.

This game flew in completely under the radar with like no advertising and being free on PS+ didn't help. A few bigg-ish twitch streamers played it once and that's IT.

This game needs a big meme youtuber to play it or it's going to be a complete failure.
>>
>>344266723
The bullet hell segments in normal difficulty are pretty tame. If you try the harder difficulty they crank that aspect of the game up to 11. You'll have times when 90% of the screen is covered in bullets, and that's not an exaggeration
>>
The combat itself seems pretty simple. Dash in, whack whack, dash out, pew pew pew, repeat

Challenging, but not particularly complex. It feels like it's mostly just a really long game of memorizing patterns.

I'm not sure if I'll like it, I'm willing to try it... but releasing it post-summer-sale, these devs hopefully realize nobody's got the cash right now. Give it a couple weeks and sales will pick up.

I will say, though, that while I generally dislike the boss rush structure, they are some pretty excellent boss fights; the arenas they take place in are almost levels unto themselves. Kind of a neat idea.

From what I've seen of twitch streamers, a lot of people are bitching because it's hard. And that scares other streamers because not everyone can make a career of fucking up in front of a few thousand people.

If I had to throw one name at Furi, I would have to say Chip from Chip and Ironicus. He's one of the few lets players that actually enjoys action games and can show what it looks like to actually be good at Furi, at least the non-bullet hell parts.

Not to suck its dick or shitpost, but Furi is legitimately difficult at parts. And honestly, some people just suck dick at vidya. If you told me 70%+ of the people who play Furi never get past The Line/Old Man, I wouldn't be surprised. Past The Chain/Jailer, the game gives no fucks about whether or not you're having a good time and understand the mechanics completely. Hell, I didn't know you could parry bullets until I was at The Song

>>344267785
If you hold down dash you can charge it to extend the teleport range. If you can't get through the laser with a tap dash, hold it for a bit before letting go. Even for a flash of a second will give you a body length or so of extra distance. Get used to dash THROUGH shit. It's a mandatory skill.

The sniper girl boss was so good. Every other boss was bad in comparison. Killing that smug cunt felt amazing
>>
>>344267820
>if you hold the dash button, you will dash further
God this fucked me up so much in the beginning -- both because the charged dash helps immensely with aoe attacks and because there's a very slight delay on the dash button because it needs to check if you're charging

>>344267871
Actually I learned the hard way that it's technically possible to avoid the wedge attack altogether if you immediately start dashing sideways when she sends out the first couple waves.

For the big swinging beam, you can actually dodge it with a non-charged dash, but you just have to time it very precisely. You basically have to be as close as possible without taking damage before dashing to go through it.

>The combat itself seems pretty simple. Dash in, whack whack, dash out, pew pew pew, repeat
I haven't played Furi but that's pretty much exactly how most shmups (which Furi draws heavy inspiration from) play too, they usually only have 2-3 buttons in addition to arrow keys and the core gameplay is often as simple as it gets. The fun comes from bullet patterns and dodging them, not from having a wide array of tools to deal with the game situations. In fact I think that this gameplay minimalism is a big reason for why the genre works so well, it sticks to the basic stuff and tries to execute it well. Of course not everyone has to like this kind of approach, but based on your post I think that the Furi devs know really well what they're trying to aim for. But yeah I've still yet to actually play the game.
>>
>>344268304
>Not French
>>
If there's one thing I can say I really liked about Furi, is that it nailed the concept of dodging moves and punishing them very well.

I hate it when I play other games and getting opportunities to hit bosses feels so arbitrary. I was playing Yakuza 3 the other day and even when you dodge a huge attack and then dash behind them and go to hit them in the fucking spine, it was basically a 50/50 coin flip on whether they would just do a 180 and start immediately blocking you.
>>
>>344268238
Why do you say that? Because you have to restart every time you die?

phases can go by pretty quick if you know exactly what you're doing, and if you're just talking about the length of bosses in general, they change things up enough for them to not feel like you're doing the same thing for six phases.

Random tips that took me a few accidents to discover

>Parry reflects all but a few types of bullets back. Try it out on The Song, mandatory for The Burst

>You can do almost every action while charging a melee attack, albeit awkwardly. You can parry, dash, and charge up a dash while holding melee and it'll function just the same. For certain bosses, there is no reason to NOT be charging a melee attack at all times because...

>Charge attacks, both melee and shot, are how you 'Punish' attacks. At the end of a combo string or during a taunt animation (when they stop what they're doing, pose, and talk shit), if you hit them with a charge attack, you'll Punish the boss and open them up for a counter attack similar to if you perfect parried them. So instead of parrying four times then just mashing the attack combo, you can hold attack, parry the four times, and smash them with the charge attack. You'll get the charge attack damage AND the counter attack. The only reason you shouldn't be trying for this is during The Edge's fight because he just tells you to fuck off if you try to activate Counter Attack on him.

A lot of people will probably disagree with me on this, but I think that the decision to not include blood hurt the game more than they realized. It just doesn't feel very visceral or satisfying when you watch the animation of a boss getting cut up with a critical attack, and they just sort of get smacked around limply with no real indication of serious damage being inflicted.

Small complaint, but still it bugged me.

I think the thing is there's only so much you can do with a controller. A lot of "advanced" or "extended" moves in most games are just shortcuts or fancy ways of doing simpler tasks. The only way to add complexity is add a secondary/"virtual" layer of interaction(puzzles, crafting) or by changing the interaction method. Nobody's built a better "mousetrap" -- controller -- yet, though.

>>
>>344268354
Yeah but it's as much a brawler as a bullet hell, and I would have liked to maybe see a little more consideration given to the melee systems.

I mean, getting close enough to the boss to do any damage at all is pretty fucking difficult, it would have been nice to have a combat system that at least let me ATTEMPT a stunlock so I could get off more than 2 hits.

A lot of people complaining about repetitiveness and fight duration would probably feel the same way; you dodge for 3 minutes but there's never that glorious 45 seconds where you nail him with 3 different combo strings and a special chainer in exactly the right order and time to keep his lifeless body pinned against a wall while you drink his HP.

All you work for is chip damage and the occasional auto-attack animation sequence; it's a lost layer of depth, but also I think the core gameplay suffers from the lack of variety and player agency during those rare moments when you can actually hit the fucker.

So how likely is it that The Voice knew about the alien threat, considering he knew Rider was an alien weapon?
I'm thinking he freed Rider just so the planet would have a chance to survive. Set in motion the deaths of the jailers so the rest of the population might live and all that.
He says he wants to see his daughter again. I think he knew that if Rider was his only hope to save her life so he acted in desperation.
>>
>>344271736

i'm pretty sure all the jailers knew the Rider was an alien threat -- that's why they went through all that to lock him up

he was probably getting tired of guarding the prison and wanted to just see his daughterfu and change the Rider's heart
>>
>>344271736
They all knew he was Alien, even the Chain refers to Rider as a different "Breed". He knew the earth was in peril anyway because of potentially other Riders so his only chance to see his daughter again was to let him out, with him talking about "hope" that Rider might be able to stop the planet's destruction. But that was never his primary concern.
>>
>>344271736
>>344271986
>>344272050
I'm pretty sure that the daughter was dying of some illness or something which was why The Voice went crazy enough to let out the Doomsday Alien he was supposed to be guarding. The Hand's Son was perfectly able to visit his Dad so its probably a deliberate contrast.

>feel bad about it

>>344220070
Strange how the edge is so dividing. Heard some people say it's the best boss and others say it's boring as shit and hard for the wrong reasons.
I mean, it just tests reflexes so in a sense it's a boss that just makes you practice on parry, but that's kind of what makes him unique and boring as well, the real flaw is that it takes out all other options so you can't feel like you're properly outsmarting or conquering him by any other way than brute force, which isn't that satisfying to me because parry feels good only to a certain extent, not when it's your only option, also not being able to combo him was a good choice on game design but it deprived me of any satisfied shit-eating grin i might have assumed while comboing other annoying bosses. It was satisfying seeing the fucker finally going down though.
>>
>>344272427
The Hand's son wasn't visiting, The Voice says after the fight that if he loved him, why would he keep him here. Combined with what looked like a family home in the background means the kid was stuck there.

The Voice talked about missing his daughter, not sure if she was dying though. He probably assumed the world was gonna end anyway with other aliens which they were almost certainly aware of, and being the prison architect he was the only person with enough knowledge of the place to break him out. So it was his only way of leaving and seeing his daughter again before the world was going to end.
>>
>>344271986
>>344272050

Well i hated the burst because i was stuck on the melee portion so the edge was like experiencing the same nightmare in a different flavour.
I don't think i've still distinguished between the 1 and 2 hit combo, the 4 hit combo was pretty easy to recognize but i had given up on that at some point, i hate how it switched randomly between dem combos, totally felt like dice rolls, i always waited too late to retaliate in fear the combo didn't end, when i saw it stopped it was too late already. Any advanced tips for that apart from maybe turning her visible with the pistol first so you can see her animations more clearly?

I know that an instant dodge would have a completely different feel, akin to Hyper Light Drifter or something, but it's not like it was a bug, it was a control choice. Being able to spam dodge without thinking would have changed the gameplay too much.

>>344273625
You have more time than you think with the sniper lock on, it's there to pressure you. You should mainly be trying to dodge through the intersection of her bullet wave and the horizontal ones so you have to make one timed dodge instead of two.

pic related
on a serious note though, we can't give the ultimated advice because like a wise anon once said it depends entirely on bosses, but try to dodge all bullets, except for super fast player seeking purple motherfuckers that you can parry. Always try to learn the opponent's combos and parry them reliably, otherwise you dodge them, but if you do you gotta dodge them good, some bosses have hits make them move like 10 meters ahead so they can still catch you. Parry is useful not just because of the heal, they let you punish the boss ending the combo right as they finish, you might have a delay by dodging that won't let you get that 4th knock down strike. Shoot things you can't reach or if it's faster doing a charged shot than dashing to him and doing a half-assed combo.
>>
>>344274257
>>344274140
Parrying also carries the possibility of you performing a perfect parry, which is free mad damage+knockdown, both of which are really good for you.

Holy shit man I thought he just delayed the attacks to throw off your counter. That's sad

So I breezed through the campaign on Furi and it took me 3 hours, got a B ranking first time, all but 2 bosses beaten first time (sniper and final bullet hell, sniper died twice and bullet hell final boss died about 15 times) and now I'm trying Furier.

I've died on the first boss so fucking much man, Furi was a fun breeze, Furier's first boss is harder than the final boss on Furi

This game is fun

Its a fact that you get your moneys worth with ps+. Ergo, That would/should negate the "Pay for internet" argument.
Understandable that if; you do not want the games and do not use the discounts then you are then "forced" to pay for internet.
Arguing over the point that someone is getting way more out of their subscription than you would is stupid.

Ok I've finally worked out why I kept randomly dying to lasers

Using BetterDS3 on a PC to use a ps3 controller to play it, sometimes it won't register you holding down buttons, and even if you hold them down (such as dodge) the character will immediately do a short dodge, even though I'm trying to charge for a long one

Fuck I was gettin so mad over these stupid lasers but turns out it's some fucking Furi PC Port or PS3 controller driver bug

Even if I just hold down the shoot button sometimes randomly the shot is released, soemtimes immediately as if i had only tapped the button, yet I'm holding it down

The Star was cool but there really needed to be one more fight that was a culmination of all the mechanics.

I liked how The Edge broke it down to just swordplay and parrying, while The Star was just full-on bullet hell, but there needed to be another hybrid fight like The Burst. I think the lack of a fight against another Rider was a totally missed opportunity.

Does anyone else get bothered by games that present you with several options for combat but arbitrarily force you to use one style over the other to complete something?

I have lasers in this game. I'll be damaging some asshole with my lasers, but then suddenly he is perfectly teleporting away from 10-15 perfectly placed charged blasts. Or I'll run up on him and start slashing, but again perfect blocks every time. The game is saying "No, fuck you, do other things now just because." It just doesn't flow for me, or feel satisfying at all.

I love Punch-Out and games like it, and it seems like this is the same sort of pattern/rhythm based battle system as that, so why do I hate this game? What am I missing?
>>

I think it looks pretty amateur and tacky, but maybe that's because I'm just not into 'mangaka' or whatever the fuck that means. The dialogue is a joke and none of the characters seem authentic. The environments and music can be alright but that's about it.

You actually can land a hit with the blaster while the enemy is dodging, or counter his perfect block and whack him with a sword, unless he's in the invulnerability phase (orange), it's just really tricky.
It's probably just too hard for you, scrub.

>>
>>344299614
It's perfectly reasonable that the game ended at that point and that you'd have to it all over, it would just not make fucking sense otherwise.

I cannot even comprehend your logic.
>>
>>344298297
What? I feel like the game let me play literally however I wanted to, up until the final bosses because Edge was melee only and Star was blaster only.

There's a shit ton of opportunities to use every attack that you want. You can charge up your sword/blaster and are allowed to dodge while still holding the charge, so instead of blocking/dodging an entire enemy combo and then attacking them, you charge up, dodge/block the combo, and then unleash the charge. You can choose to either be dodge focused and be incredibly mobile, or block focused and rebound attacks towards the bosses while simultaneously healing up. You can use normal bullets to destroy boss bullets, or you can sacrifice mobility and charge a shot to destroy a pack of bullets.

In fact, I've seen a lot of videos where people are really blaster heavy while I'm really melee heavy, and it just goes to show there's a lot of opportunities to do both.
>>
>>344299170

Ok. How do you do it then? If it's possible then there should be a surefire method to pull this off, and videos somewhere of people crushing bosses by exploiting this. Links please?
>>
>>344299915

I wish I had saved the footage of me dashing and charge blasting for an honest minute while the boss just flickered around the screen. It felt so cheap and forced to me. It was like the game was broken.
>>
>>344300369
nah, you can break the game when fighting the Hand. When you he goes to do his charged ground attack he'll run away from you. If you stay close to him he will literally run forever.
