I've played Borderlands 1 and 2 solo, it's an unbearably dull game. Co-op is the focus of the game, and has always been.
I must be the only person on the planet that loves this game. It was made for me and here's why:
I like playing online games but I HATE playing with people. I can't stand team dependency, even though almost every game I feel like playing requires it.
Evolve is perfect. It's a balanced 1v4 pvp environment where I get to play online against people and I never have to play with them.
I bought the game and all the dlc, and while I completely understand how Jewish it was of the developers to cram it full of dlc, I never understood why the game never got more credit.

People can also have varied tastes and enjoy FF, Witcher and whatever Bioware shits out. The deal is that the market is saturated with shooters, and while a single player can be finished in a matter of hours, in order to be enjoyed MP games require people to keep playing.
Someone who liked CoD4 at the tail end of the PS3/360 shelf life might be annoyed that it wasn't as active as it was at release, you might not find games for the maps you like and things like that, which leads to a poor experience with the game.
I doubt Evolve only has to compete with Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, it has team dynamics that you can find in TF2 and many other shooters. This goes for many games too, CoD and Titanfall trying out faster movement may appeal to people who enjoy faster paced games and so on.

Those games are fundamentally different in how they play. The movement systems in CoD games are designed for players to get a drop on their opponents and rewards reflexes and accuracy. MP games are harder to pirate (at least, while retaining the ability to play on public servers. An issue when there are no private servers) and more importantly are easier to monetize. Companies can easily double-dip with a $40 shelf price and add cosmetics/MP items for sale ingame. Like EA did with the recent Battlefront.
Most publishers would rather take a loosing gamble because there will always be a handful of idiots that will buy everything. The margins may not be big, but it's usually enough to get another game greenlit. Compare this to making a single player game, and nobody buying it with no way to gouge those that did.

I remember Gorgon being insanely strong, I really can't see her suffering much from the changes. Kraken I think is still good. I haven't lost with Meteor Goliath yet, though I haven't played this game since the beta and my account is only level 4 now. It has been pretty easy to fight my way out of a dome at level 1, and I've killed all the hunters in every game at level 2. I'm guessing everything will really change though once I get up in level and people get more experience.
