ITT: Gaming misconceptions

All my life, I've thought that a dump state was a stat that you dumped all of your points into.
>>
>>344162285
When I first heard of the term "min-maxing", I thought it was some kind of cheat where you'd get all your stats to maximum by under powering yourself and then glitching the game out into giving you infinite points.

I thought "power creep" was when something got buffed subtly over a long period of time until the point where it eventually "creeped up" to being strong, like Lina from Dota 2.

Somehow thought cookie-cutter builds were the opposite of what they were given cookies can be in a lot of stupid shapes when you use cutters
I have the same bass as Mio
>>
>>344162285
You mean is not?
>>
>>344164375
What is it actually?

>>344164640
Apparently it's a stat that you "dump" - as in, you don't touch.

>>344164439
Are you a cute like Mio
>>
I pronounced "fatigue" as fa-tea-goo for most of my life.

It wasn't until Persona 3 that I realized I've been saying it wrong.
>>
>>344164758
Power creep is when things that are added incrementally are more powerful that the stuff originally in the game. Basically overtime everyone has to use new gear or characters to compete.
>>
>>344164982
That's retarded.
>>
>>344165150
Couldn't agree more.

Hewlett-Packard.
>>
>>344164982
Power creep is also a writing thing where a protagonist repeatedly has to get stronger to beat the next opponent over a series of entries, i.e., Goku.

Only vidya example I can think of offhand is the Metroid Prime series where Samus starts out as a bounty hunter then ends up destroying an entire dimension and later a sentient planet. So in a way, >>344164375 isn't wrong

I always thought Ardougne was pronounced Arr-dough-gee-nay.

It has a specific meaning when applied to video games though, which I gave.

>Power creep is also a writing thing where a protagonist repeatedly has to get stronger to beat the next opponent over a series of entries, i.e., Goku.
Which is exactly what >>344164982 said, except applied to long-running games, especially MMOs.

Harry potter Points
>>
>>344163607
Wait, what does it mean then? From what I understand it's like the dullest way to play a game.
>>
>>344167269
The tldr version of min maxing is going full autist on character development to get the best possible characters.

For example, ff tactics, stat growth is linked to job lvls. Meaninging there are spreadsheets out there thst show you how to get 3 more points in strength by going out of your way to do shit
>>
>>344167269
Min-Maxing is a concept that exists in a lot of RPG's where there are dropoffs where certain criteria can be met.

For example, in Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion, a lot of your skills are pointless to level up outside of the gates of 25/50/75/100. Intentionally beelining for those specific gates would be Min-Maxing.

In Dark Souls, equipping the heaviest, most protective gear while maintaining 24.9% or 49.9% weight for the light or Medium rolls respectively is also min-maxxing.

In pokemon (before gen 6) going 252-252-6 EV's instead of 255-255 was also min-Maxxing since the additional 3 stats in those trees would not give any benefit, while being very careful to shave those fat stats to put 6 somewhere else would grant you exactly 1 bonus stat somewhere. That is also min-maxxing.

Understand? It's about squeezing out the best possible potential out of very small numbers.

>Iori is fateagoo'd!
>>
>>344167761
The general gist of Min-maxxing is the philosophy of, "If a game presents you with a math problem, solve it."
>>
When I was a lot younger and dumber, playing my first MUD (Merentha) I thought skills capped at 100. So I ended up with 100 in all the skill even my non-class ones and thought the game was just super overtuned because my character was essentially garbage.

I later learned they cap at something like 5000.
>>
>>344167761
As a habitual minmaxer, I do it because of autism and feeling like if I'm not doing the absolutely most optimal build I could possibly do I'm not playing the game right.
>>
I got a PS2 at launch. It wasn't until 2013 I learned you could turn it off by holding down the green button. The entire time I had always been turning it off with the switch in the back.
>>
>>344168039
pretty much this
>>
>>344168050
WHAT
>>
>>344168050
HOW
>>
>>344167761
Basically, it's trying to get the maximum output at the least possible amount of input. Requires a shitload of actual effort to figure out what the most efficient way to spend your skill points or EXP or whatever, but as soon as someone does, and posts about it online, you see tons of lazy assholes emulating it. They're the true minmaxers because they didn't even put any actual effort into designing the build they just copy what someone else took the effort to find.

For over a decade I thought console games were just naturally dark and difficult to see in, for atmospheric purposes. Then I realized the brightness level on my TV was down too low.

When I was a kid I asked my dad what it meant and he said horsepower so that's what I thought it meant for around 8 years

>>344168039
What if they game doesn't have an "optimal build"? Then what do you do?

>>344168268
Yeah I'm not surprised people would do that.

I don't know. I mean to turn it on the first time I had to hit the switch, right? So I just assumed the switch was how you turned it on and off, and that the green button was purely to restart it back to the launch screen.
>>
>>344168495
As long as a game has stats, there will always been an optimal build of some kind, or multiples, because it's impossible for the game developer to perfectly balance everything. Min-maxing just means eliminating as much underpowered and useless shit as possible so you can make the good stuff overpowered.
>>
I thought glitching in speedruns was frowned upon. Now I know that it isn't but still think it absolutely should be.
>>
>>344168039
>>344168268
I like min/maxing but I hate meta/cookie cutter shit, does that make sense?
>>
>>344168495
>>What if they game doesn't have an "optimal build"?
If there are stats and abilities to pick there will always be an optimal build.

My vidya perfectionism autism manifests in other ways like feeling compelled to S rank everything in any game that grades your gameplay no matter how many times I've already done it or how frustrating and boring it can be.

Ones that I've seen and were somewhat shocked by were usually pokemon
>30% of pokemon players think Skarmory was gen three
>a surprising amount actually think Slowking evolves from Slowbro

As for me, I didn't realize "search" or "inspect" commands worked outside of treasure, so I was stuck in the jail in Shining Force for 2 years and assumed that it was the end there, restarting the game every time I got to that point.
>>
>>344168495
It's mostly about "beating" the game. Not in terms of reaching the end, but outsmarting the devs kind of thing.

I personally find it boring and it kills any enjoyment of the game.

>>344168865
Makes sense, I'm pretty much the same way. But I'm not really smart enough to minmax effectively so I mostly just end up with weird, borderline useless characters.
>>
>>344169016
thank you
Shining Force was my autism outlet when I was a kid, I spent upwards of ten hours grinding useless spells to high levels every time I restarted too
>>

You also forgot to mention that it was a right-handed model by the way

I thought that every game had a sex scene or some nudity you could unlock. You just needed a Gameshark, Action Replay, Game Genie or do some secret challenge.
>>
>>344171785
I was playing through Fallout NV and I thought paying the whore would have something interesting. It was basically a black screen.
>>
When I was a little kid I thought that enemy NPCs were being controlled by people working for the developer, like somewhere there was a warehouse full of people all sitting at rows of computers controlling the enemies.
>>
>>344172220
I have a fun dream of a game like this that will never come to fruition. Basically just create a world and fill it. Then start with a small group of people and let them go lose with the game and program their actions/consequences in. Basically a dm in vidya form. As it expands and more people play and their actions get added you end up with this amazing world to play in.
