Thief 2 > Deadly Shadows > Dark Project

I thought Dark Project was the weakest of the series. It probably had only about six or so levels that were really good, while the rest were really garbage.

Thief 2 is a masterpiece, however. And Deadly Shadows, while flawed, is bretty gud too.

i disagree
you are a pleb that has most likely never played a game older than '95 and cant handle labyrinths

As a matter of fact, one of my favorite games of all time is pic related. And I played through it long before I touched SS2
>>
>>344109962
everything you said about dark project is correct, except for the conclusion youve drawn from those statements
there were only a couple of good levels in TDP, but those still make it into an excellent game
DS on the other hand just sucked, the new engine really didnt work for the game imo
not gonna disagree on thief2>TDP though
>>
I bought thief 3 for a couple of bucks on the Xbox and fell in love with it years ago. Should I play the first thief or second? I want to explore the series a little more I really enjoyed the atmosphere of deadly shadows
>>
>>344114425
The levels that were great in TDP were REALLY great, but the levels I didn't care for, I really didn't care for (Lost City, etc). On the other hand, there were only two or so levels in 2 that I didn't care for.

>>344114574
Start off with Thief 2. It's the best, and if you really enjoy it, play through TDP. It does have some of the best levels of the series, but it also has some of the sloppiest IMO
>>
deadly shadows had the best guards AI, they actually noticed if you moved objects around or left doors open

only 1 guard in thief 1 did that
>>
>>344114574
First thief is great ignore OP. Both games complement eachother very well and are part of a greater experience. Thief gold has more paranormal stuff and crypt robbing and a better plot.
>>
>>344114216
I tried it out just a bit ago. How do you live with the controls? I'm a retro-ish gamer, but man did a lot of old games have shitty controls.
>>
>>344116197
Guards do notice when you open doors in TDP
>>
Gold>TMA>TDP>DS>Thi4f
>>
Pretty much everything in 3 feels worse. The movement especially. Having loading screens on the maps was also shit.

Thief 1 wasn't really what Thief is known for as it had a lot of basically tomb robbing with undead and stuff rather than pure stealth, which is where 2 went, but it's still miles better than 3. Even if not all of the levels are great the gameplay itself is just better.

>>344116407
Not him but rebind them. I had a pretty strange layout for SS but it worked. I think I had esdf for movement, tgb for stances, wr for leaning and c for canceling.
>>
I really liked thief 4.

not sure what the problem was.
>>
>>344116539
only that one in the first manor, the rest dont, I was playing thief1 right now
>>
>>344116845
Have you played Thief 1 and 2? Because 4 plays completely different from them and does 99% of everything worse.
>>
>>344116772
someone once described the movement in thief 3 as though garrett had a peg leg. I think that's accurate. also, everything moves really jerky and looks like clay or something. a lot of unreal engine games had this problem.
>>
>>344116986
I quit after on like the second map I got stuck in the geometry.
>>
>>344116960
yes.
you're lucky to even get a sequel.

Not getting a sequel would have been better than getting Thief 4. What's the point of getting a sequel that is in every way worse than its predecessors and fundamentally misses the point of the games?
>>
>>344117285
To ensure the IP never goes into competent hands like Fallout.
>>
Thief 1 is great. Although it is the weakest.

It's just weird, you've got shit like Assassins or Horn of Quintus nghhh and then shit like Thieves Guild and The Lost City.

Thief 2 is just everything that made thief 1 great + more.

>bank robbing
>invisibility
>those fucking cutscenes

DS is better engine wise but still it feels less open/less options.

DX = Thief 2
IW = DS
HR = Thief
Mankind Divided will be Thief Gold Basically the same but somewhat better
>>
>>344117480
Maximum pleb. The only thing DS does better is lighting.
>>
>>344117409

Might as well sell Thief to Codemasters and have them make a racing game out of the IP.

>>344117480
Thief's engine was designed to do what they wanted to do. Yeah, it was older than UE2 and couldn't hold up graphically but it did other things better like the sound propagation and actually being able to do rope arrows.

LGS were actually working on a new engine when they shut down. It was going to be called the Siege Engine and probably take the good things about the Dark Engine and have a more updated renderer. But no, instead of a specialized engine we got a sequel on the jack of all trades engine that couldn't even do things (or at least the devs couldn't figure it out) that the earlier games did.
>>
>>344117285
you don't have to play it. :)
>>
>>344117775
I meant to say "just like fallout"
>>
>>344117775
why is it so hard to do things in engines?
>>
>>344117670
Yes, the one thing Thief is about, being on the shadows in DS is the fucking best. Arguably more atmospheric than Thief 1. Not thief 2

Somewhat relevant

An anon posted this in the last thread, truly a hard shit to read.

Unreal (at least with 3, but I imagine 2 probably was similar) is made to accommodate basically anyone who wants to make a game so it's very general in what it can do. If you make an engine yourself you can tailor it to what you want to do. It's more expensive and time consuming but it'll generally lead to a better result than just using something like UE or Unity.

The Dark Engine was designed with good sound programming to allow for pretty complex sound propagation for instance. I think the issue with ropes in UE2 were more that UE2 had more complex physics that could mess with things like the rope arrows. Though the Dark Mod even allows rope arrows on moving surfaces so I think the people making Thief 3 were just too lazy to get it to work than UE2 not being able to do it.
>>
>>344118085
Thief is about sound not just light/dark
>more atmospheric
Loading screens are great atmosphere

TDM blows DS out of the water. Too bad they can't officially use the setting.
>>
>you will never play LG's Cold War spy game

Also apparently LG was working on a few N64 games at some point

I remember I heard Thief 1 summed up as "A DnD Thief solos a campaign" and that seems pretty accurate. It has a lot more weird/magic stuff in it than 2, which is your more typical stealing from the rich experience. Both are great, I like Thief 3 as well, though the engine is janky as hell. I feel bad for all the games that released with that engine in that state.
>>
>>344121253
It's not that bad in other games. It's the same engine as Postal 2 and the first few Splinter Cell games, UE2.
>>
>>344121469
Postal 2's pretty shit tho after the edge factor wears off
>>
>>344121469
Yeah, it's serviceable, you can just tell that most of them weren't really able to quite get the engine to do what they wanted it to.
>>
>>344109962
Supreme taste anon

>>344116845
Most people complain about irrelevant shit like, BOSS FIGHT or WHERE MY ROPE ARROWS but the big problem is that almost all levels are linear and it overly simplifies the stealth aspect because you basically only have one direction guards will come from and everywhere behind you is safe; which means zero tension.
