>Q: HOW DO I GET ACCESS TO COMPETITIVE MODE?
A: To gain access to Competitive Mode, you must have a Premium TF2 Account and a qualifying telephone number on Steam. Examples of a telephone number that does not qualify would be a Voice Over IP number (e.g. Skype) or a number linked to a VAC-banned account. (For more information about qualifying phone numbers, please visit the Steam FAQ.)

>Q: WHY DO I NEED A PHONE NUMBER?
A: Associating a phone number with a Steam account helps ensure a greater degree of account security and player accountability, which reduces the likelihood of cheating and abuse.

>Q: WHAT IF I CAN'T OR DON'T WANT TO PROVIDE A PHONE NUMBER?
A: If you are unable to associate a telephone number with your Steam account, you can purchase a lifetime Competitive Access Pass from the Mann Co. Store. When the Meet Your Match Update goes live, you will be able to buy the Pass at an introductory discount rate of $9.99.

I mean you need a phone number for trading anyways. So unless you're new as fuck, this isn't a problem. And if you are that new, you probably shouldn't be playing comp for a while anyway.

It makes sense, considering that TF2 is a F2P game now and there otherwise wouldn't be any walls stopping hackers from shitting up matchmaking with throwaway accounts.

The questionable part is that people who owned the game prior to it going F2P aren't grandfathered into the competitive system. Which means any old players not using the mobile authenticator is probably forced to pay more overall than a free player nowadays who just has to go premium by buying a competitive pass.

As a rule of thumb companies don't ask for this information just because it's "necessary" for security's, they like to have it. They'd probably ask for your blood type if they could find a good excuse.

Why isn't this system being implemented into CS:GO's competitive?

It's actually less than what most games do.
$10 price tag for another go around attempt with cheating is must easiest than paying 40-60 for a new copy. Even then in cases like Blizzard, I don't know how they track cheaters, but apparently they are really good at autobanning cheaters who try to buy a new copy of the game.

That's because of this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx-YFFnruDs

The huntman is a projectile (like rockets and grenades), which means that it doesn't use the hitscan hitboxes in pic related.

Doesn't make it any less shitty, but to be fair the Huntsman is pretty unreasonably difficult to compete at all with the Sniper Rifle in terms of consistently succeeding with it (outside of luckshots)
>>
>>344113927
Everything free isn't actually free, you pay with personal information in which the company uses to profit from.

It's like getting upset about those cards grocery stores like safeway give out for free that allows you to get discounts, they just want to track your buying history.
>>
>>344116675
actually I doubt they'd make that mandatory. an optional login via facebook like everything else does on phones, easily, But Valve clearly want some way to start linking your phone data and your account data.

>>344115318

If it was REALLY about security, they could just offer an Open Key Authenticator app for your phone instead that doesn't need a phone number (like the Battle.net and Google ones)

But nope, they can't because "reasons".

That's all you need to know that they want your number for other reasons, enjoy your marketing.
>>
>>344118748
...valve already offers exactly what you are saying

>marketing

they can't do anything marketing related with my phone number, it's against FTC rules and violations are $40,000 apiece.
>>
>>344118882
>...valve already offers exactly what you are saying

No, they don't. Go ahead and try to attach that app to your account. You get a page asking for your SMS capable phone number (So no Twilio or Skype) and if you hit no, it cancels the set up.
>>
>>344118560
that's because you set your priorities wrong. the protection of your privacy should come before having cheaters to buy a new number real quick.
>>
>>344116012
>Why isn't this system being implemented into CS:GO's competitive?

It already sort of is.

In matchmaking, people who don't tie their phone number into the Steam authentication are pooled together and kept separate from the people who do have authenticators.

So what that means is tie your phone number or get pooled with all the hackers.
>>
>>344118963
>doesnt know how to setup a bullshit sms capable number in 2016
>>
>>344119052
anon there is no privacy anymore. it's long gone and anything you think remains is an illusion because you're unable to let go.
>>
>>344119085

>Using a throwaway SMS on Steam

Hey retard, those numbers are leased wholesale from telecoms. Once you stop using it or the account expires from no use, some other jackhole will get it.

If the next person who gets it registers it and gets VAC'd, you do too. All accounts associated with a number get VAC'd, that's why they're requiring it for TF2, to prevent cheaters from making many accounts.
>>
>>344119085
You do realise using a throwaway SMS with Steam is unbelievably retarded, right? You don't own that number, the provider will recycle it eventually and someone else can use it to recover your account or get you banned if they go and hack CSGO while using it for their account.
>>
>>344119057
really, already? that's awesome. just started playing again the other day, been rekking kids
>>
>>344119204
no. the amount of privacy you lose is the amount you give up with shit like this for example. just because it is compromised by many companies already doesn't mean you should readily shove it into the face of others who don't have it yet. your reasoning is completely irrational.
>>
>>344119468
Do you own a cellular phone? yes or no.

>Yes.

Then shut up. You walk around all day with a GPS tracking device through which all communications are recorded.
>>
>>344119581
read my post again and work on your reading comprehension.
>>
What's wrong with providing a phone number? Even neets have landlines, right?
>>
>>344119085

SMS tiering is a thing and it's starting to spread rapidly to stop all the scams online. Most methods won't work anymore because the telecoms who own those leased numbers are tiering them down to tier 3 numbers, meaning they can't be used for any website that requires a tier 2 SMS number.

For example go grab an SMS number from Skype, Google, Twilio, FreeText+, or AnyCalls and try to use it to sign up for Hotmail, Gmail or Facebook. You'll get an error that "This number cannot be used for authentication".
>>
>>344119663
Yes, and what I'm saying is that you walk around all day every day with something that represents giving up ALL Your privacy.

Me giving my phone number to valve does not represent ANY loss of privacy however. It represents a loss of anonymity, which I have already lost by purchasing through steam.

So please, chicken little, tell me more about how the sky is falling, when the NSA can turn on your microphone and record you at will. LOL.

a company doesn't have any business knowing my phone number. they don't need any more connections to me that i have to cut if i decide to stop associating with them. a phone number is a huge loss of privacy as you said already so you shouldn't just give it to anyone who asks even if others already know it. every extra source of identifying you is money for them because they can now profile you better and know better how to market you better.
the NSA has nothing to do with this but i'll tell you anyway why it is bad for them to be able to spy on you. hypothetically if for some reason the government turns into a police state and polices opinions and political view then every single citizen is a target and expressing your opinion could in your own home can get you in prison. i'm not tinfoiling. i know that this isn't the place in america or europe right now or that it is going to happen soon but it has happened already many times in history and it is happening right now in many places. turkey is on its best way to turn to a dictatorship for example.

yes. hypothetically steam could turn hostile and sell my contact informations to marketing companies. or maybe they abandon thei safety measures on the contact informations and it gets hacked. i wouldn't want to associate with that company anymore and i would like to keep my connections to any company as low as possible to minimize the risk.

The game is dead. The community is toxic and filled with fucking friendly fags. God, nothing boils my blood so hot but friendlys, wasting my time, the teams time and their time.

I had to send blizzard staff a picture of me holding my ID, just to get my account back. I don't think that's part of their protocol and is against privacy rights. Staff would not give me my account back and were going to flag my account as fraudulent if i didn't.

Imagine Valve doing that to you.

Do people really have an issue with this?
I use my phone for 2 factor authentication and its a good way to keep the hues and shitters out and its not like they sell your phone number since its used for 2 factor which is a security feature and not general account information. The trading things sounds like a pain and im sure it can be inconvenient but i understand why its there.

okay can someone answer this for me
what is the big deal with matchmaking anyway?
it's the same thing as how it is in cs:go: right?
you spend five minutes waiting for a match to be made that is considered "balanced", with severly less people, and then once the game emndsinstead of an oppurtunity to play several you're just throw back into the lobby to wait another five minutes for another "balance" match
if thats how it is I still don't understand what the big deal is

Those two points are unrelated since Valve/Steam and TF2 aren't 'opening', they've been around for over a decade. Why are you defending corporations trying to nickel and dime consumers?
>>
>>344126126
why not just improve the anti cheat engine then?
>>

>>
>>344107362
I mean look at CSGO

It's a paid game and still has rampant cheating, like I believe I read something like over 10-30% of the community cheats

TF2 just wouldn't stand a chance since it's f2p, although it's kinda stupid to sell a 9.99 pass. That's an obvious cash grab, shoulda just grandfathered any accounts that bought tf2
>>
>>344126414
Because people will just improve their cheat engines. This happens on all sorts of games.
>>
>>344126632
well it's obviously not good enough if they feel like the have to charge money for it to deter hacking
>>
Solution: don't play multiplayer games. They're all a scam and they're ephemeral "experiences" anyway.
>>
>>344126765
that guy is retarded, i don't agree that it's to deter cheating in the slightest

$10 is objectively not a lot of money and it didn't stop people from cheating in csgo from day 1

As somebody who actually plays halo, those aren't the same thing.

The thing peopl;e freaked out about with Halo is bullet magnetism, as you say (which all console shooters have and need), what happens in tf2 in that webm and overwatch is a hitbox issue (though halo has had those in the past as well)

If it were bullet magnetism, the actual projectile trail would show it alinging towards the player model. here, it goes straight, and passes by the player model but just causes damage anyways
