Okay, so I haven't played ZTD yet, but I have played 999 and VLR recently and I still have two concepts that I have a hard time wrapping my head around and I assume won't be explained in ZTD.
1. How does adult Akane exist if young Akane dies in the "canon" storyline? The whole point of the game was for Junpei to help Akane not die in the incinerator, but adult Akane could only exist if young Akane didn't die in the incinerator. So wouldn't the existence of adult Akane in the timeline mean that she already reaped the fruits of the game before the game even started, which is to have her younger self not die?
2. Someone give me a diagram of how the young Sigma/old Sigma/Kyle mind shuffling plays out because I can't even begin to wrap my head around this, and the ABCDE diagram in the game didn't really help. I've been trying to line this shit up in my head and I can't get a single coherent narrative. The only thing I really understand is that Sigma's infiltration (ZTD) failed once and that's because "I" wasn't controlling him, so if I played as him the plan would succeed.

The game has 3 "modes".
Cutscenes, Decisions and Escape sequences.
The Escape sequences have you locked in a room and forced to search the room for clues and puzzles to find a way out. These use the mouse on PC, or the analog sticks/touchscreen on other systems.
This most recent game is similar to Telltale games in its presentation, but the gameplay segments are much more "game-like" in that they require actual effort.
The other two games are coming to Steam soon, and have the same Escape gameplay and decisions, but rather than cutscenes they're presented like a Visual Novel.
I suggest waiting for them to release on Steam before playing this one.

That's why most things that go the "official English release years after fan translation is available" route (Clannad, Muv-Luv) do a Kickstarter. Not just because then you can set the funding level at an amount that you know will make it break even, but more importantly you take advantage of the fact that the average "casual" fan isn't going to feel like buying a game they already played for free, but someone who played it for free years ago and fucking loved it will gladly throw $100+ at you to buy the game and get some goodies like soundtracks and figures and shit on top of it. That's why the average pledge on those Kickstarters are noticeably higher than they are on ones like Bloodstained that are less known quantities but have more normalfag appeal.

- C-Team gunned down, their screams are heard out loud, and that's not realistic since after only a few bullets they wouldn't have strenght to scream anymore. Meanwhile Phi burns to death and not a single death cry is heard, which is unrealistic since being burned to death will have the victim scream to the very last second of their fading lives.

I really loved ZTD, and even with all its problems, I'm still smitten.
But I feel like the overall concepts of the Decision Game were SUPER under-utilized. While the separation into false 'wards' was interesting, I kind of wish they did it VLR style where the separation was piece-meal and there were sections where everyone was together. The Forget-After-90-Minutes was more or less only used to instill general doubt about events and have their interactions be scheduled. I expected everyone to be together like VLR and for them to be desperately trying to circumvent the amnesia with explanation notes to themselves and such and chaos ensuing whenever they woke up and anyone was dead.

Anyone else like the cinematic style of ZTD? I thought they were going to be terrible, and they kinda were, but it was because of bad animations and directing, not the writing. I think Uchi's style can benefit a lot from the cinematic style, since his games are drama/conflict heavy and a lot of physical actions and blocking are a godsend for good drama and conflict.

No, I didn't like it. Problem with the "cinematic style" is that it doesn't allow for inner monologues, letting us get more intimate with the one MC like in the previous games (this also relates to the problem of splitting the cast between 3 groups). Instead it feels like I'm just watching a movie play out instead of "personally" making actions, solving puzzles, and thinking from my own perspective as the MC. Obviously Junpei and Sigma were their own characters in 999 & VLR and not a blank slate/self insert type of character, but you still identify with them to some extent and the lack of one central MC, with inner monologues and the quirks of the story being told through the VN perspective of the MC, hurts immersive. Again, it felt like I'm watching a movie play out instead of actually seeing things unfold from the position of a MC.
The cinematic style of ZTD also cut down on a lot of the text and, in turn, shortened the game considerably. ZTD would probably be 30+ hours, like VLR, if it was a traditional VN.
I thought this game was said somewhere to be a sort of trilogy concluder.

The biggest issue was how they fucked up the UI on the 3DS version of ZTD, particularly during escapes. If you look at VLR, it uses both screens to their full potential. If you were solving a puzzle, you could bring up the memo or hint to the top screen and reference it easily. In ZTD, you have to go back and forth between the memo/hints and solving a puzzle. The top screen was just a duplicate of the room on the bottom screen minus any useful features. So fucking stupid.

The problem with the cinematic style is that it doesn't allow for good text dumps of inner monologue. You never got moments like pic related in ZTD because of the change in style. We never got to know Carlos as intimately as we did Junpei or Sigma because of the switch. I would also argue, because of the lack of budget, the character models in cutscenes were significantly less expressive than the 2D animations of 999 and VLR.

No, time travel does work like that. It branches. It's why Old Sigma travelling back from the VLR timeline puts him at a point before all the timeline splits that happen in ZTD, and Phi and Delta exist in all timelines. The only explanation for there being one Carlos is that the splitting point of that particular timeline was the act of Carlos appearing, which doesn't really add up but I guess it's like how you think that the going with Alice timeline in VLR is created by going with Alice but is technically created when Akane is saved.

yeah I agree and the same can be said for 999. restricting it to 3 people teams means a lot less interesting reactions, especially when at least two people in each team know one another already (Akane+Junpei, Phi+Sigma, Mira+Eric.) And I understand why Akane, Junpei, Sigma and Phi had to be in this game, but the newer characters didn't get any real solid development as a result of focusing so much on those four in comparison.
One of the big turning points for me in ZTD was related to thiswhen Sigma and Diana open up the yellow door and encounter Sean and Eric, then later run into Carlos. Everyone getting to actually talk to each other in a larger group made a huge difference.
