I've been thinking about Planet Robobot. It's a really great addition to the Kirby series. I'm just worried that this might be the last game in the franchise. They put a lot of work into it and went through the trouble of referencing previous games. And are they really gonna end it on a gimmick, the Robobot Armor? It would have been fine with Triple Deluxe. The whole multi-plain feature was more of an aesthetic than a gimmick.

Has anyone else noticed the Planet Robobot's emphasis on traversing 3D enviroments? A lot of the bosses (Whispy Woods, Susie, D3 clones, and Haltmann) function pretty similar to how few of the bosses were fought in 64. Kirby's 3D Rumble is also a very evident example of HAL experimenting with Kirby on a 3D plane. On a side note, there are quite a few nods to Kirby 64 than like the API Holo Defense Unit being modeled after 64's Pix and some of 64's music being remixed or reused for PR like its boss music and Factory Inspection. Why do I keep bring up 64 exactly? Well, it's the closest game that has Kirby try to traverse a 3D environment in an era where almost every 2D platformer was going 3D, and even then Kirby 64 was mostly 2D.
However, with HAL experimenting with 3D and the more recent nods to 64. I think that the nest Kirby will bea 3D Kirby 64 remake, SSU treatment.

I wouldn't be surprised if HAL were to do that knowing that Adventure (NES) was remade for the GBA, and Super Star (SNES) remade for the DS. It could very well be a pattern.

However, I would very much like it if Kumazaki moved on from the Adventure formula. I mean, PR is fantastic, and Kumazaki's games are generally good, but he's essentially remade Adventure three times now. A breath of fresh air wouldn't hurt the series though.

I never got around to finishing it out of distractions and lack of focus, but I really liked it. I made it around 4 or 5 worlds in at least. It's nothing too complex or pretentious at all. Just HAL making a game mechanic and designing a lot of levels around said mechanic. Each world introduces a new thing too so level design does build up as you go. The later half of the game actually gets pretty challenging to figure out, particularly if you're trying to get all the crowns. There's also bonus rooms you can unlock that issue challenges and have their own hi scores or par times to aim for, and those can be a bitch to manage sometimes.
Basically it's a fun new sort of game and you can take it all at your own pace if you just want to get to the end, but getting 100% is its own entirely different story. I'd consider those bonus rooms more challenging than anything Kirby usually throws at you if you're trying to actually perfect them.

Not gonna lie, this was an idea I once had for how to bring back "power mixing" in a cheap way but to keep multi move abilities. I figured a cool way to implement it would be to have two buttons for inhale (B and X maybe) and the ability you copy is assigned to that particular button, with the B ability granting a hat and the X ability changing Kirby's color. Could also be cool if each combination got one exclusive move to use for itself to justify experimentation.

Zero doesn't summon Dark Matter clones, he actually just spat them out in DL3.
Zero's the "leader" of Dark Matter, and the DM Swordsman that came to Dreamland in DL2 is just one of the many Dark Matter henchmen (he was a particularly strong one of course).
There's not much info after that though, so it's not known if Zero is actually the originator of Dark Matter, of if he found them and started possessing them himself.. He is a separate entity from them though.

If we combine things like fire/burning, and suplex/backdrop, we still end up with ~45 abilities.
With 6 animal helpers, the amount of powers skyrockets to 270.
Without animal helpers but with mixing, the fucking amount of powers jumps to a LUDICROUS 1035.

The reason we don't get more of the old characters is because HAL's teams actually know how to ration their nostalgia pandering enough so it doesn't become too big a focus of the games. Robobot did do a lot of that shit with Dark Matter Clone and Not-Nova, but it still had a lot of its own cool new shit to work in alongside it all. Haltmann's bossfight is great and I love Star Dream's design. (the actual computer that talks and flies onto the Access Ark, not the Access Ark itself, which everyone seems to get it confused with)

Konami didn't say anything, but Hal introduced Capsule J3 in subsequent games, and Capsule J2 in the remake, in order to avoid any issues.
And to be honest, at least sprite-wise, Konami would have a pretty strong case.

Dream Land 3's use of the animal friends to modify the base selection of abilities resulted in even more actual abilities than combining did in 64. All 8 abilities essentially had 7 versions, the original plus six animal versions, 56 abilities, not counting the smaller changes to your movement that having an animal friend with no ability at all granted. Kirby 64 had less than 40 all told, it was a downgrade. It stands out because it's 3D, a lot of people had an N64 as their first console, and kids getting really excited about kirby having a lightsaber. Forget the fact that you have to throw away your entire mixed ability to start experimenting again, when in Dream Land 3 you could get rid of just your ability or just your animal.

As someone whose first Kirby game was 64, I don't want to see it come back. I'd rather not see HAL have to resort to recycling old ideas out of laziness/for the easy nostalgia pandering. As far as sequels go, I prefer having fresh experiences that stand out from each other. Y'know, Planet Robobot almost ended up being a straight up Triple Deluxe 2, and I'm really glad that they didn't go down that path. We got a really excellent and unique game out of it because they wanted to continue adding new gameplay ideas instead of rehash an old idea.

I prefer the Super Star ability system, but I see value in the way the Dark Matter games did it, and I'm the person who just wrote that. I'm just tired of always hearing it with regards to Kirby 64. The appeal is that you get to experiment, and usually the results of thos experimentations are most off the wall, like using chuchu as a hot air balloon with fire. The ideal would be mixing abilities that have multiple moves, but for good reason, I think everybody understands that that's a ridiculous amount of work and only asks for one or the other.

Basically, Galacta Knight's last time fighting Metaknight is in SSU, because he explodes and is then vaporized at the end of the game. However, he fights Metaknight and Kirby again in RtDL and PR - he comes from the crystal, but at the end of the battle he doesn't get vaporized or blown up, he just flies away. He also doesn't break out of a crystal in SSU, he just flies in and tries to kick your ass.
So, Metaknight and Kirby's first time fighting him is in SSU, even though it's his last. He doesn't experience time like everyone else, because the Clockwork Stars are fucking him right up.
Pause screens would only get you so far on that one, since you'd have to have played SSU to fully understand.

It pretty much has to be this way, because not only is it an insane amount of work to MAKE the moves, but also to balance the moves with the rest of the game and not make it an ABSOLUTE cake walk, which it almost always invariably is anyways.

That makes for a power set of 24-28, which is the upper limit, but we did just have essentially that many powers in PR.

Where do no ability runs fall on the true arena tier list? On paper it sounds like the biggest handicap, but it depends on how many stars you get and how much damage they do. Are there any abilities that are even worse than having no ability at all? Assuming you know how to use the ability, I would think being able to attack the boss whenever you want would be a huge advantage, but there's always the chance that even with that, you can't outpace the damage from spitting stars at only specific times without an ability.
