Having actually beat The Fall I can state confidently and with authority that Alex and Malik are functionally the same character, and when I say functionally I mean both in gameplay role and personality. It would have taken the slightest adjustment to slot Pritchard's responsibilities (which it's safe to assume Alex will now also be taking over) to Malik and it genuinely would have done the feeling of continuity with the first game a world of fucking good.
Honestly the more cynical part of me says the only reason they did it was so they could have a black woman (that holiest of holies of minorities) be a part of the main cast, which is even more egregious considering Alex was whiter than fucking Malik in The Fall.

Mobile game is underrated by the way, if you actually play the way you're MEANT to play HR (no long range weapons, sneaky stealth takedowns only) it's a solid 7/10. More if you really, really liked HR.

Nonlethal is better in everyway. Get the double-takedown perk as soon as possible since it gives the best experience, hack EVERYTHING, never use one of the things that does it automatically. Stick to takedowns, don't shoot anybody unless they're a boss [spoilers]or you've already taken them down and you're just giving them the coup de grace[/spoilers]
Get the original version and the expansion off a torrent site since Steam doesn't sell it anymore, the game of the year edition runs like shit and worst of all they took out the piss filter and the ambiance doesn't really work without it, it was THAT big a part of the game's atmosphere.

Non-Lethal gives you significantly more experience for each takedown. Aditionally, not being spotted by enemies or cameras give you about 750 extra EXP per section due to the Ghost and Smooth Operator bonuses.
All in all the game is heavily biased towards non-lethal stealth sections if you want to make the most of your run, but as Anon pointed, New Game+ of the Director's Cut version mitigates that a bit

I just got started on the Missing Link part of the Director's Cut version and the fact that I lost all my enhancements completely sapped my will to play.
I was getting complacent on strolling my way past everything with invisibility + quiet movement, but I honestly feel kind of robbed now.

I don't know, I always felt like at some point in development someone got two lines of code mixed and the noise range of lethal and non-lethal takedowns got swapped by accident.
There's no trade-off for going non-lethal, it is both easier AND more rewarding than lethal, considering you can non-lethally subdue two people standing side to side one at a time without the other one noticing
