Japan is fucking terrible when it comes to character design. Never mind that they're over designed with impractical features but it's always shallow pandering. They make direct appeals to their audience instead of something that makes sense within the game world. Imagine if I wrote a story with a character that sudden acted in a way that I expected my audience to enjoy rather than in a way consistent with their character. That's the problem with pandering you mouth breathing weebs.

3's Vita version fixed a lot of issues with character growth and other similar mechanics, but 4 has better sprites, although slightly less classes overall. Both can last you around the same, and the good thing of the Vita versions is that you get all the DLC in one package so you're not jewed out for anything.
There's also a bonus for transferring your savefile of 3 onto 4, but that's the only thing.
I like 4 more because the visual presentation is more polished and the characters aren't as annoying, but 3 isn't bad.

2 isn't bad, but 3 and 4 brought in better mechanics and they're more streamlined so the grindan isn't as repetitive and actually feels fun. And 2 is a PSP game, so just pirate it if you feel like playing that first. 1 and 2 aren't bad games, the only shit game in the series is D2.

Merchant Man is pretty garbage and even his ultimate skill isn't great as Sakuya's Terminal Strike does fixed damage more reliably.
I found Popo very strong up until endgame where her damage falls off a bit, she's fast, has great movement and can attack from all sorts of ranges, plus Rusty Key is the best song you get until lategame.
Next chapter you get the tsunshit Fire Witch and Nonoka who breaks the game in two.
