Sometimes they lock substantial content behind them AND they can be hard to find. If they want to sell DLC they should at least have an option to buy the content digitally without having to track down $20-40 scalped figures.
The worst offender I've seen from Nintendo was Twilight Princess HD. They locked an extra Cave or Ordeals and a harder difficulty mode behind the Wolf Link and Ganondorf amiibos respectively.
The Shovel Knight amiibo unlocks co-op and customizable armor on Wii U/3DS, which are pretty big features.

But the fact is, for one thing, feelings do exist and when someone is overly harshly critical on something, that can absolutely kill any hype the creator had for making the thing in the first place. All I know of the "official story" is that the characters were just extra skins at first (though with slightly unique attacks). I mean, I guess I thought it was kinda weird since Dr. Mario for example, WAS a separate character in Melee, but to be fair, Sheik and Zelda, as well as Samus/ZSS were characters on the same slot in Brawl, so I don't find it unbelievable. Kid Icarus is... actually kinda understandable to me. Though as far as I can tell it's more, either the controls actually hurt you or they don't. I wouldn't blame people who just can't get used to them, but for me at least, they seemed to make sense and allow for a unique way of playing.
I heard Star Fox Zero just plain had problems with its set up though, like both playing by paying attention to the gamepad or watching the tv have its benefits, but you can't really know when's the best time to look at either one.
