I was never into the idea of Sonic as a kid, but eventually I heard all this shit about how "cool" the series was and got this and Unleashed.
I'm amazed I didn't kill myself. The slowest Sonic game and one of the most poorly executed ones with one of the worst settings.

Holy shit I'm sorry. The Black Knight wasn't much better as far as controls went, but thankfully waggling for the sword meant they couldn't bind forward movement to the fucking motion controls.

I'm also not a fan of Arabian settings, but I've met a lot of people who like them. One neat thing Secret Rings did was the upgrades system (relatively hidden within the menus)

Also regarding Unleashed, I liked that game. It had a myriad of issues, mainly the errands and horrible night time levels you needed to slog through to reach the MASTERPIECE daytime levels. But if you got the Wii version it was horrible; I believe that one had more night time levels, and naturally the day levels weren't as good as the other console versions. Only reason anyone got it over the other two versions was because it released weeks before them

The night time levels still blow me away in Unleashed. Not only did you have to play them, but you also had to find enough hidden sun medals to unlock the rest of the stages. Not to mention the one music track they play during enemy encounters (aka, all the time). I loved the 3 daytime levels I played, but I quit around the ice level. Forgot where that was geographically.

These, Sonic Advance 2, and 2006 are the extent of what I've played from this series. I don't think we're missing out on much.
