Nothing. It saved pc gaming.

Why is Black Ops 2 still $60?

Hardware interest.

If you want to know why Valve isn't creating games anymore it is because internally they change from being a software company to a hardware company. A third of Valve is working on VR right not and the rest is busy maintaining CS:GO/Dota 2/TF2.

Idiots will say the crate system just because of the third party scandals while buying booster packs for Hearthstone.

They stopped developing games, and starting shitty cosmetic updates.

The entirety of CSGO is just a bunch of slot machines for shitty skins, and the updates they add to that game are simply to grab people's interests again.
The R8 revolver was a ridiculously OP gun, but it was added in to get people to play CSGO to check out 'that new crazy gun'.

Likewise with TF2 and Dota, the quality and frequency of updates both took a dive. New heroes come out once ever 10 months, instead of the twice a month we had in early 2012. TF2's visual style was destroyed and the game is horribly unoptimized.

It's all to just get people to fork over cash, whilst putting out shitty content rarely, but this content is wacky and zany enough to grab interest again.

And now they're focusing on VR. fucking hell
>>
>>344025857

literally everything went wrong except financial mismanagement

they just made enough money to fuck around on an operating system with zero install base and a controller that comes apart in your hands, both three year+ projects that would have bankrupted a company that didn't have their hands in the pockets of every PC developer on the planet.

The hiring of behavioral psychologists to better exploit the fuck out of people with as many different systems as humanely possible. All of which leads directly back into Valve's pockets.

In addition to that everything that Valve has done has somehow been passed off for the benefit of the user, like everything they did was a direct improvement to the service and not a simple money making scheme.

All of Valve from the loose management structure downwards realised that it could make more money and still have a good standing by simply taking community created content and releasing it for small amounts of money, creating multiple false economies and doing nothing to stop the tide of Russian gambling, price fixing and endless fucking scams.

this is all so weird. I know that valve has the capability to make fantastic, amazing games. Just going back and playing the developer commentary for TF2 and portal is so interesting.

The design choices they put in were fantastic and showed major talent, but now? It's just a bunch of economists who promote gambling. I can understand that gambling is extremely profitable, but why did it have to be valve? coudln't it be EA or blizzard or something? why valve??
>>

That Valve no longer exists, you know the entire flat structure they have going there? No one is working on games, all of the actual video game developers left the company. Most of the current games Valve is actually supporting has a skeleton staff working on them.
>>
>>344027949
that's not technically gambling since it's (technically) not for real money

>The design choices they put in were fantastic and showed major talent, but now? It's just a bunch of economists who promote gambling.

In the end a companies' prime purpose is to make money. A private organisation passively leeching billions without having to give back anything at all is a perfect business model for Gabe. Even more so if they have so many people defending their horrible customer service and their tax evasion. Exploiting psychology and circumventing fiscal laws earns them more money than making games and funding developers to make exclusives at this point.

It is clear Gabe Newell hasn't given a shit about gaming for a long time. Their customer service is still beyond horrible. They don't give a shit about their customers by completely dropping off the radar in terms of communication. Gabe is now enjoying his hundred million dollar racing team.
>>
>>344027949
>>344027789

Everything about the scheme is a very very well thought out way to make money, it all has the ability to be hand waved away with "Well you never need to spend anything!" but theres a reason the game constantly tells you that you got a new crate and it might have something super awesome inside it.

>>344028304

Still less cancerous than nickle and diming actual content.
>>
>>344025857
They stopped making games and instead went full jew with steam.
>>
>>344028793

Yes the incursion of F2P mobile systems into PC gaming is totally A fucking OK.

You know whats better than either of those? Paid expansions and free content. Cosmetics shot into fucking space. Its quick, its easy and its lazy as fuck.

You know what even more than that simply saying that other companies do it so its ok for Valve is a whole load of shit. This is Valve its pretty easy to see why people hold them to higher standards than your Ubisoft or EA.

Can you really see current Valve being able to produce anything as good as Lost Coast, with the same level of commentary and insight?
>>
>>344025857
The ancient dilemma of the corruption of virtues through power and money.
>>
>>344029217

Their current games do not support the paid expansions format. It would be terrible for Dota 2 or CS:GO. Can you imagine if every major patch for Dota 2 was paid? People would fucking riot.

Now if you expect a company to keep supporting a game that big for free you are simply delusional. The best they could do was to offer cosmetic content on the side which is by far the best solution to the problem. They get their money and we get their free and constantly supported game.

EA and Ubi do not do the same because the locked away content is often gameplay related, like how Riot does with League. Things have changed recently though exactly because Valve proved how successful you can be if you only monetize cosmetics.

>Can you really see current Valve being able to produce anything as good as Lost Coast, with the same level of commentary and insight?

Nope. Not unless they stop fucking with hardware. I feel you there.
>>
>>344026431
You can tick both CS:GO and TF2 off that list. They get bare essential updates that keep them somewhat playable and that is it.
>>
>>344030671

CS:GO's map updates are pretty vital for the game, and the community embraced the Operations system.

TF2 is a weird case, but it is getting the long awaited competitive mode soon.

Both revolve around community created content and are only curated by Valve. Meanwhile the only game updates we get are half-assed fixes that won't repair the core faults. The Overwatch system is a great example.

Money made, gameplay hours, overall value per developer hours spent goes trough the roof with csgo/tf2/dota style games compared to half life or portal where people spend 30h to play trought once and never touch again.
Which would you want to spend your time working on?

Gaben isn't held back by board politics or shareholders, so therefore he isn't interested in gaming.

but why did it have to be valve? coudln't it be EA or blizzard or something? why valve??
Because EA and ubisoft are held back by the online infastructure of consoles. Valve on the other hand built an entire online infastructure on pc the most open platform possible which gives them the ability to do anything they want, theres no one above them or limitations telling them they can't do that, with the amount of freedom that valve has theres no limit to what they can do, they have pc gaming by the balls, not only that the whole pc master race and praise gaben shit already builds a reputation of good will to the unaware, and no one wants to acknowledge their favorite platform gradually becoming more shittier, and will do their best to ignore reality and not say anything about it, not like it would do much anyway almost every change that makes steam worse is just small enough so it doesn't catch mass backlash

>tfw i've actually gone back to playing consoles
>theres probably a good chance unless something with power over valve steps in and tries to stop or limit this enough theres a good chance all the cancer that valve has created early access games, loot box economies will spread to consoles and probably become common place next gen
