Polygons overlap and leave gaps in places. To say nothing of how trying to send mario "Outside" the level boundary (but not into a QPU) will make his movement fail at some point.
In fact, when mario moves to a location, the points at 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of the distance to the location (along the same vector) must be over one of the simplices, or mario will fail to move the whole 4/4 distance, and instead terminate movement on the final simplex (which may in fact be at 0/4, or where he begins).
In fact, this non-movement of Mario is critical for establishing QPU speed. Mario on a slope tries to move a given distance, but is prevented by doing so since he is trying to move outside the level bounds.
The simplices being a non-partition are vital to even reaching the damn QPUs where the defined partition and injection have merit.
Paper is sound, but does not apply to Mario 64.
