Why did Nintendo think it was a good idea to hide board 9 in such an obscure, random location?
>>
>>344012205
Isn't there an NPC that hints the location of this one?
Also exploration is a huge part of the game.
>>
I dunno it's not like you're bombing the entire length of the wall those are a little obvious.
>>
>>344012313
Exploration isn't the same as bombing random walls. That's just poor level design.
>>
It's so fucking stupid yet is so fucking obvious.
>>
It promoted exploration and talking to others/buying the magazine, if that was even a thing at the time.

Plus the more time you spent on a game, the more perceived value. It's hard to find but not impossible, and once you find it, it's easy in subsequent playthroughs.
>>
SPECTACLE ROCK IS AN ENTRANCE TO DEATH
>>
>>344012205
>board
>>
I played the game a few years ago for the first time, I found that entrance by accident. I thought it was really fucking stupid, but it's a really old game so whatever.

I discovered this level because the manual said that the place where the rocks fall is the Death Mountain, knowing that it was the final dungeon so I just started to spam bombs in all the areas/places near of it.
>>

>>344012875
Old people slang for level.
Very old people slang.
>>
>>344012205
had a harder time finding the random place to use the lantern.
>>
>>344012205
It took me forever to figure out how to get in to level 7. Then when I did I literally ran down the street to my friend's house to tell them.

I know you get hints but I was a literal child who couldn't decode some of the cryptic shit those old men tell you.
>>
>>344013383
my friend says that and he's 26.
>>
After finding my first ITS A SECRET TO EVERYBODY I naturally started bombing every two tile span I could and found all the hidden shit
>>
>>344015235
>bombing the entirety of the south shore wall

Ahhh, memories. That's when I learned that if you place a bomb between two squares you can bomb both at once.
>>
>>344012205
Are you telling me you didn't bomb every wall in the entire game?
You must have missed out on tons of secrets. It's the 9th dungeon for crying out loud. Bombing the walls of the two rock formations in the middle of your path is by no means something "obscure" at that point.
>>
>>344015217
As I said.
Very old people.
>>
>>344012205
Artificial way of making games longer. Pretty much the same reason as why most nes games are hard as balls.
>>
This game was just an advertisement for Nintendo Power. Shit this obtuse is not good design, the first good Zelda is Adventures of Link.
>>
Personally, I found GRUMBLE GRUMBLE more infuriating.
>>
>>344012205

>>
>>344013383
I'm 35 and started games with older people than me and nobody ever said that, stop rewriting history, normie.
>>

>>344012205
tbqh, zelda 1 design sucks. too difficult to find shit.
>>
>>344016683
A lot of people I met that started playing video games in arcades and eventually when consoles started getting coming out have used the term board when referencing levels and shit. It's possible it's a region specific thing. Just because no one said it around you doesn't mean nobody ever said it.
>>
>>344012313
One of the old wise men says something like "It is in the eye of the spectacle" which is vague enough to make the mystery fun. Regardless, you;d probably find that anyway since you'll be bombing every square inch of the map for free money or hearts, and those boulders are conspicuous.
>>
Zelda 1 would be improved one hundredfold if you could tap the walls like in LTTP.
>>
>>344017197
I like that. If that was the case, it'd be a much better game.
>>
>>344015951
>hard as balls
>muh nes difficulty
>nintenhard

The /v/ gauntlet has taught me that you can beat allmost all of them in one afternoon and we were just dumb kids.
>>
>>344012205
>board
U wot m8?
>>
>>344017724
While it is true that they are relatively easy to beat now, it's also true that console games back then were coming off the extreme and often cheap difficulty of arcades so they could get more coins from you, and had to make games on consoles artificially hard in some cases in order to keep people playing and often pad the length of the game due to cartridges not being able to hold a lot of information.
>>
>>344012205
I actually played through the original loz for the first time about a week ago
great game considering it's age and limitations
a little tedious and cryptic but not as bad as some others from around that time
>>
>>344012391
it's not random, it's a very conspicuous spot.
>>
>>344016718
>zelda 1 design sucks. too difficult to find shit.

>tfw my dad told me he literally made a map with his friends in order to find everything.

It's literally the best map design in the history of Zelda.
>>
>>344018735
That was always part of the fun. Sitting around with your friends trying to figure something out. I'm not saying Legend of Zelda has the best design or is the best game to ever grace the Earth, but I'd love to go back to the days when games didn't hold your hand and throw tutorials in your face, because they think the modern gamer can't function on a basic level.

>>344018735
I remember played early dungeoncrawlers and being the most hardcore I got to every floor first and shared my maps. With newer games I stepped up by drawing by using a ruler making them look super neat. Best part was as you passed the map around it would get stains from every place it was giving it some kind of pirate map beaten look.

I dont think I could handle drawing maps in the current day and age but still it was pretty fun to do.
>>
8 and 9 seem to be in really obtuse spots, but when you realize there's no other areas like them in the game is kind of sticks out.

I stumbled on both early on in my first playthrough.
>>

no one said board in arcades either, it was stage or level. Are you one of those faggots who say "toon" for player character too?

>>
>>344020846
All I said in my original post was in the region I grew up in it was a popular phrase to use when referring to different levels. Your argument of "No around me has ever used it, therefore it isn't a thing" is retarded.
>>
>>344013383
It's probably actually a retarded variant, like when people call controllers "paddles"
>>
>>344019383
Grimrock has their own version of this; a mode where you have to draw your own map. It doesn't work as well in that game due to the height on some maps making it very confusing, but overall I'd say those games are a good callback to those games.

fuck crabs though.
>>
>>344021547
>it's a popular phrase in my area, so everyone should know what it means!

this is retarded logic, too.
>>
>>344012205
>finding the magic sword
>finding level 7
>figuring out the lost woods

All harder than finding level 9. The game conditions you to bomb things that are shaped like those boulders. You are literally a retard if you didn't find level 9 before you were equipped to go there.
>>
>>344016521
There's a clue that leads you to pretty much everything you need though.
>>
>>344016521

>>
>>344022101

>>
>>344016683
What the fuck are you doing on /v/ and why are you arguing about someone using the term board? Cool your aged tits and stop throwing around buzzwords.
>>
Not to sound too "it was better back in my day", but anyone else who grew up with these games probably agrees that we just sort of gain a sense for suspicious locations like that. I mean just look at it, its a wall thats not part of the edge of the map and its flat on the bottom facing side. Youd be an idiot not to try bombing it
>>
>>344021203
>Board Runner
Looks like it doesn't exist. Are you from a parallel dimension? You'd better go save Arturo again.
>>
>>344022363

Here you go

>>344012205
Most people would say "level 9" or "dungeon 9," because its standard. You posting "board 9" implies you think the phrase is common.
>>
>>344022753
Idiots don't realize that these games were made so you would buy nintendo magazines for hints or call expensive nintendo hotline service for hints

It was a scam for children
>>
>>344021547
So what you're saying is that you have no way of proving you pulled that phrase out of your ass?
>>
There's a hint in the game.

Also, you should've learned by then that suspicious looking areas should be bombed/candled.
>>
>>344022917
Not all of us had access to those so you got a feel for a lot of these things. Then theres things like castevania 2 where if i remember right the translation just leaves you confused.
>>
>>344022323
And didn't exist until two years after Zelda 1 came out
>>
>>344022878
I'm fully aware of "level" and "dungeon" being the standard. But guess what I'm not the op so try again dipshit.

>>344023050

why the hell would anyone post regional slang on a board that has people "all around the country"/all around the world, though? it'd be simpler to stick to level/dungeon, so we won't have idiots like us arguing about semantics

Nigga, the only reason CV2 is notorious is because nothing in the game tells you you need to crouch while having the blue and red orbs selected. Everything else can easily be found out by thoroughly exploring. Hell, the only thing temotely unfair is how easy the bosses are, since you can abuse such cheap tactics against them.
>>
>two suspicious-looking rocks
>9 dungeons in, after thoroughly learning to bomb everything to find secrets

i mean, i'm from Newfoundland. i wouldn't post "yis b'y" and expect everyone here to know what it means. (i can't think of a gaming-specific thing from my area, so pardon that.)

my main issue was that OP seemed to expect that "board" was still in wide circulation, when it was used by like five people in his suburban town in 1994 or whatever. making a mountain out of a molehill and all that.

>tfw we both fell into OP's trap

Zelda II gets shit on so much, but it's actually much more fair in terms of giving you hints on where to go. nothing in that game approaches the levels of "how was I supposed to know that" bullshit that Zelda 1's 2nd quest has.

Same reason a lot of games from back then have obnoxious design. A combination of compensating for minimal memory and having little reference material.

Did you ever play the game without a guide as a kid? you're literally bombing everything in your way.
>>
Board is a holdover from the days when all the action took place on a single screen and advancing in the game actually changed the "board" you played on. Also, in the case of LoZ, it could be argued that it is similar to a grid-based "board" that a group would play on a tabletop, like DnD or some shit.

World is a section of a game that features a similar naming or design structure. For example: 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, and 4-4 in Super Mario Bros. are all part of World 4. Many modern action games use the more military sounding Mission for this.

Level and Stage are interchangeable and is each individual part of a world that has a beginning and an end. Using the above example, you would point to Level 4-1.
