Why is it the most popular Final Fantasy entry?
Is it to do with:
>story
>characters
>settings
>gameplay system
>FMVs
or a mixture of all of the above?
Because it was the start of 3D RPGS

Yes
Cause dumass kids in the 90's thought the cutscenes were actual gameplay and bought it.
reminder FF8 only gets hate because casuals thought it was a sequel to 7
Who here /UnironicallyXIII/
>>Most fun sidequests with gamebreaking rewards
>>entertaining minigames
>>comic mischief
>>you start the game as a terrorist
>>nonlinear

And because it has a bad plot, cast, dialogue and gameplay.
>>344011441
Because of the technology and groundbreaking cinematic presentation when it came out, more than anything else.
Videogames as a whole were changing, not just jrpgs, and this attracted a lot of people who had little or no interest before.

>you start the game as a terrorist
Best intro in any game imo.
>that music
>that moment when the camera pans up to show off the prerendered background
FF6 was one of the best looking RPGs at the time and this completely outshined it
Perfect storm really.
First 3D FF.
Exclusive on the most popular console
Massive marketing for its time.
Generally lived up to the hype
Iconic characters and moments.
>>344011032
And yet it still showed more in game footage and explained what the game was about more than the old commercials.
FF3 just had shitty marketing.

It was the Right game at the right time
Materia was a cool system, except for how it basically diminished party members to their limit breaks and weapons/stats. A way of maintaining more character uniqueness and utility apart from each other would've been better.
The best parts of its world and story come from following FF6, and feeding off Project Noah/Xenogear's prototype as an FFVII pitch.
>>344011924
>ooh, scary.
>>344011090
and the fact that it was a love story before anything else.
and the junction system was easily broken.

>tfw back then i was looking forward to the day when games would have gameplay graphics that looked as good as these cutscenes
It was the only final fantasy that actually had a big world with a lot of content. Everything before it was limited by hardware, and everything after it focused on better graphics instead of meaningful content. Style over substance.
