This is why 8-4 working on a game like Nier Automata is a very bad thing. These games are japanese to their core and not afraid of controversy. Both things that 8-4 loves to sanitize to appeal to their own tastes, core audience tastes be damned.
You can continue to bury your head in the sand but just know that there is a good chance the version of Nier Automata you play and the one the Japs play may end up being very different and not what the creators intended at all. I don't mind localization or English dub in a European setting or what seems to be one.
But if the setting is Tokyo, hearing a bunch of Japanese teens speak like they were living in South California is weird to say the least. Furthermore, the quality of the voice acting isn't decent compared to Japanese.
Anyway, learning Japanese is good to play the underrated gems that have yet to be translated. And you get to have the full experience typically before others.

8-4 is pretty bad though, they did awakening and it wasn't as bad as all the cut content from fates (and complete lack of dual audio like in fates), but the infamous dlc streetpass bugs and dual audio bugs in awakening were still pretty lame, same with the character rewrites (but treehouse was still worse)

Localization teams are hired contractors. They do what they are told. If they are hired by a publisher to make literal translations, that is what they do. If they are hired by a publisher to "make a translation that will appeal to children in the west", that is what they do. If they are hired by a publisher to "make this scene more identifiable to Americans", that is what they do.
If you are unhappy with small verbal translation changes that were handled poorly, blame the localization team.
If you are unhappy with SWEEPING CHANGES IN CONTENT, CHARACTERIZATION, COSTUME, etc., blame the publisher that requested that these changes take place.
I promise, publishers do not hand their 18-month, $850k product off to 8-4 (or any studio) with a sticky note that says "make English please!" and just not check in ever, while this studio schemes and plots to make changes that they never asked for just to ruin your favorite franchise.

Just understand you have zero conception of how this business works.
With comics and TV shows, western companies purchase the rights to produce and sell localized versions. It makes sense to judge a localization company for content changes because the people doing the localization are (frequently) also the ones deciding HOW it is done, and what fits with their marketing strategy.
Videogames are not comic books. Square Enix has a whole goddamn corporate division dedicated to the west, they are publishing the game here too. Localization is done by hired teams who do as they are instructed and Square Enix decides what they do and whether or not they did a good job at the end of the day.
Which means that, for any video game, just like for any media, if it's changed during localization, there's like a 97% chance the PUBLISHER ARE THE ONES BEHIND IT.
