Weak GPU. Like you bought a weak GPU to begin with which was a mistake so now it's aging fast, unless you are OK with it. The best overall upgrade is switching to an SSD. 500GB Samsung 850 EVOs go for like $120. Requires reinstalling windows but worth it for great day to day use. GPU is obviously the better upgrade for purely video games.

I will be building my machine soon, will be using linux annd using a vm with hardware passthrough for windows games.
Does the amount of hyperthreads impact gaming performance when in a vm? I don't know if I should get a 6700k or a 5820k.
>>
>>343933587
Um most vidya depends on your GPU. CPU just affects base loading along with your hard drive. Don't quote me on this but CPU doesn't really matter too much for gaming.
>>
>>343933834
If all you're doing is gaming go for Skylake. Since you're using Linux and VMs, instead of dual-booting like a normal person, make sure you spend 50% more to get equivalent Windows performance.

So my friends helped me build a gayman pc three years ago, and it's still going strong. I have little idea what kind of maintenance or upkeep I need to do on the hardware though. I occasionally blow compressed air into the case to get rid of the dust, but stuff like applying thermal paste sounds less fool-proof.

What do I need to do to keep my computer in shape, and how do I avoid fucking it up?

That's more or less all of it. You can do some stress tests to check if everything is alright.

After 4-6 years change thermal paste on CPU and GPU. Buy thermal paste, clean the old one with rubbing alcohol and fibre sheet, apply small amount of new thermal paste.

Consider reinstalling the OS onto an SSD. You may also get a new GPU if you want better graphics after few years.

A well set up computer works for decades.

The arcane sorcery i've used to get a few old games running might not survive a reinstall. Then again in theory there shouldn't be anything particularly stopping me simply cloning windows.

Then again for all that said i'm planning a total rebuild late this year/early next when zen and the next batch of gpus drop (plan to go balls out for 4k) and that will require a full reinstall, so I might as well wait until then for an SSD.

Just have to 1) remember which key I used to activate windows and 2) lrn 2 make a win10 boot disc.

>>
>>343940256
wording this post. why would you spend money upgrading your PC if it can already play old games, which are almost universally better?

is it just graphics whoring? gotta push better framerates and AA settings to somehow make up for the lack of entertainment value? most of the multiplayer games run on toasters too, so it can't really be a competitive thing.

>Laptops last gen have full blown GTX 980 chips in them.

Why would you think they're unable to run current games?
>>
>>343940670
I'm a huge emulation nut so I like pushing my pc and having high FPS in MP games on high settings so its not it was a huge waste of money.

I told myself that the games would come and I was tired of having every MMO I play run like shit even though I spend at most a month on them before I get bored. I was going to get a gpu upgrade but I hope my R9380 can hold just a little bit more and I'll just get a PS4 instead.

Are the aftermarket rx480s likely to have the same power issues that the reference cards have shown?
When are we likely to see them?

What card should I get if I just want something that will run games through the end of 8th gen at 1080/1440p60 and is very reliable? Do I need a 1070+ to be able to do that?
Can I get a skylake i3 instead of i5, and still play everything?

Most likely, AMD is supposed to release their driver fix soon. You can undervolt the card right out of the box to help reduce the issue a bit.

>1080/1440p60 and is very reliable?
the 1070 is kind of expensive but it definitely has a huge performance jump.

the 1060 is coming around soon you could wait to see how that performs.

not really, many games are using more than 2 cores and the i3's hyperthreading doesn't help as much as you'd think

My 2-year old (minus the new graphics card) PC has been acting up recently (in the past 2 months). The monitor goes black, or goes into sleep mode, and the sound stutters then cuts off. This happens unexpectedly, whether it be soon after booting up or after hours of use. It doesn't seem to be an overheating/power problem because it never happens when I'm running games. Someone suggested that I reset my BIOS and I did, but it still happened.

Then

2) Consider purchasing more powerful hardware.

Yeah there isn't much point in a huge gpu upgrade at such potato resolution. Overclocking the cpu if your motherboard can handle it is a good move.

Plus what gpu do you currently have?

Pic semi-related, me pushing an 8 core chip to its thermal limits.

reference cards are the original cards, they tend to have blower style coolers so literally anything that doesn't ahve that is not a reference card. Though there are cards with blowers that are not reference suck as the 1070 aero. And no all brands sell reference cards at first

Assrock is like supermarket brand cola. It tastes like cola, but it's still shit. There is a reason they are the cheapest.

Now, water cooling. The smaller the form factor, the better water cooling is. Not much air flow compared to ATX, so even just having a closed loop on the CPU will give benefits to the GPU being air cooled, and being a VR machine the GPU will be always on high loads so I say it's a good investment. I heard mixed things about them but rule of thumb is, more expensive = more reliable.
But on the other hand, a Noctua D14 is on par or sometimes better than closed loops, but it all depends on the set up. I would suggest researching, asking around people who had experience with water cooling in ITX form factor and go from there.

That motherboard won't take too much in the way of overclocking but you might be able to squeeze just over 4ghz depending on the voltage your chip wants (and assuming you can actually cool it).

Assuming 1080p and ignoring budget the go-to card as of right now is the RX 480. That said if one looks into used cards there are some tasty deals to be had.

Regardless of what you decide just make sure your psu can actually feed everything. Its no good trying to upgrade if your shanghai street vendor special psu can't keep up.

> Would I still need to overclock if I wanted to get an rx 480?

A stock 6300 tends to sit around haswell i3 levels of performance. A decent overclock will push it into i5 territory. You should always overclock AMD cpus if they aren't doing what you want at their stock frequency - you can gewt some impressive gains. If that doesn't do it for then you will have to go Intel.

>Also I'm using a coolermaster 500w powersupply, no cheap brand or anything.

Wattage doesn't inherently mean quality, nor does any particular brand. EVGA for example makes some monstrously good psu's (mostly rebranded superflower ones fyi) but equally they make some utter shit ones. Its something you will have to research on your own but the crucial number is wattage and amps it provides on the 12v rail.

This is a rough guide to set you in the right direction.

>>
>>343950639

You only stop when it does crash - they go back a step. That is the only real way to tell.

There are plenty of guides out there for overclocking FX chips but the rule of thumb is simple.

1) increase frequency to what the chip turbos to (probably 3.8ghz or something for the 6300) and see if it runs stable at that on stock voltage (it should do but shit chips won't).

2) If it still works bump frequency up by 100mhz

3) Run a stress test like Intel Burn Test or prime95

4) If it crashes nudge voltage up

Repeat until temperatures get out of control or more voltage doesn't keep it stable and then back down to last good configuration.

Also: disable turbo.

You can build a PC that will play modern games at 720p, medium settings pretty easily.

I got a question senpai.

I've built a few computers to date, but I seem to be struggling as of late with loading areas and effects before I get 60+ FPS, is prebuffering of areas for a few seconds before it can actually smooth a RAM problem?

I got a free AMD 8350 and EVGA 970 GTX from a friend who upgraded, but I only have 4 sticks of 2GB Ram. I am suspicious that they are struggling.

Would new on-screen effects / loading buffering of textures upon changing areas be a ram issue?

They're ancient ripjaws sticks.

Battlefield 4, Total War Warhammer, Witcher 3, Crysis 3, Ass creed unity/Syndicate, Watch dog, GTA V, probably tons more these are just off the top of my head

For example in Battlefield 4 multiplayer 64 players, the 2500k @ 4.6 will be at 90-100% usage. The GPU usage will fluctuate from 70-99% depending on how much is going on. The framerates are still good, like 70-90 on ultra but I know with an i7 I would be at locked 120.

So i'm looking to build a PC.

Sitting on a 7 year old laptop that can run games, i just have to make them have N64 graphics. Never EVER in my life have had a PC worth a damn, mostly because of being a poorfag and lack of knowledge on the subject.

I don't even know my budget, i'll be honest. Hardly looking for a god-tier machine, but just something that can actually run vidya at more than 20fps with Nintendo DS resolution.

Here's the specs, but just know it's likely going to cause vomiting.

Not too much, but I was running it at about steady 40fps on high with my old shitty setup, just expected a bigger performance gain.
Honestly though, I can just imagine getting a 2k monitor and having to deal with sub 60 drops in newer games, or even just a 144hz monitor and not always hitting 144fps which doesn't sound worth it to me.

Its not unoptimized at all, you are just running a demanding game at max settings

Hairworks drops frames by alot on everything because its a gameworks feature, all gameworks/nvidia features heavily cripple framerate

980 gets average of exactly 60 without hairworks with everything else maxed, so 100fps for a 1080 sounds right without hairworks

MOAR GRAPHICS FOR THE LEAST MONEY POSSIBLE.... if you're smart, if you're a retard you just go for the most expensive shit.

or if you're smarter, you buy parts good and cheap enough to last you longer than two years.

i've had my 8350 since they came out and i don't see myself buying a new CPU any time soon, my 290 is also performing quite well and i still get 60+ FPS in games like Witcher 3 on ultra.

intel processor will last you longer but it's more expensive as well, and lets be honest, new games have a tendency to support 8 cores even if they are weak cores like in the AMD, i personally still have AMD because amd sockets and backward compatibility means i've been in a continuous upgrade of CPU and Motherboard one after another, i don't remember the last time i bought a CPU and Motherboard at the same time.

if i had to buy a new motherboard and CPU at the same time i'd probably go with Intel this time around, depends on the bang for the buck and how many bucks i have.

I've had these parts for two years, and the only upgrades I've done so far was an additional SSD and 8 more GB RAM. My next upgrade will be towards a better card, despite how well it runs, since next generation games don't really run well with a 2gb card. Should I go ahead with finding a good 4gb card, hold off until later, or upgrade the CPU, which is also working well?

toss a mid tier gpu into your moms desktop and it will be console quality. PSU might be an issue but most of the time throwing a cheap gpu into a prebuilt is better than building a low end pc from scratch because gpu, cpu, mobo, and psu are not components with longetivity if you cheap out on them

Hitachi is still very good, along with WD

I wouldnt buy a 4gb card now, its pretty much in the same position that your 2gb was in when you bought it (about to become obsolete within a year)

6-8gb minimum if you want to keep the card longer than 1-2 years, 1060 6gb or 480 8gb are your options unless you want to pay out the ass for a 1080 which will lose half their value when the ti releases.

No real point upgrading a CPU that is 1 gen outdated, just overclock it to 4+ ghz and wait a few more years

You can go lower by like $40 by getting a trash motherboard and a mediocre PSU. Furthermore swapping for an 8300 is possible to save $20 or $30 more but not recommended, and going for a 6300 would cripple the build. If you want a halfway decent PC you need $600. $500 goes below the point at which you are giving up a lot of power for a handful of dollars.

A CPU upgrade of any significance whatsoever ALWAYS comes with a motherboard upgrade. A new generation of processors physically will not fit with the last one. The exception is a die shrink (same shape processor, but newer gen) except those are not even remotely worth upgrading to since it's just slightly newer.

The upgrade in your case would be a minimal one when it comes to most things people do on computers. It would be a moderate upgrade if you do other things like video work, but then again, if you do that sort of stuff you should probably be using a codec that allows for hardware acceleration via GPU.

In short: Probably not.

>>343965535

I figured as much. I've just been having trouble running Squad stably, and people have been saying; "Oh it's more CPU intensive than GPU". So I figured I'd look into a CPU upgrade, but upon further reading, it seems like the game is just lousy with optimization.

I know I wouldn't be able to update my mobo along with a CPU at the same time due to money, and.. Among other things inability to actually do it myself. The CPU I could, but mobo would have me confused.

Regardless, thanks.
>>
>>343965208
Nothing about this jumps out at me as being wrong. Only thing that might be a problem is the PSU wattage, but I haven't calculated the power draw of the components. I would go go for fully modular for that small of a case.
>>
>>343965162

>>
>>343965208

2 things wrong here

1. That PSU is weak for such a top tier build and not modular. I suggest 750watt modular
2. You're buying a windows 10 oem key

Oem means that key will ONLY work with one motherboard you install it on. Nothing else. If you get a new mobo you need a new key. Secondly you can get keys much cheaper elsewhere

If I were you, I'd key a windows 7 64 bit pro key here for 25 dollars

https://www.reddit.com/r/microsoftsoftwareswap/comments/4rcxgf/hwindows_10_7_8_81_office_2016_2013_2010_pc_mac_w/

Then I'd upgrade to windows 10 for FREE so you got both covered. The deadline for the free upgrade is this month on the 29th so if you can't do it all by then I suggest just get a 10 key though it's 45 bucks. It's not OEM though which is what matters here and is a good thing.

First things first, this is not overclockable. At this budget you NEED to buy a 6700k over a 6700. Are you going to be utilizing the hyper threading? Are you doing video work? 3D Modeling? Raw data processing? Simulations? If not, you probably want a 6600k. You can OC a 6600k to give you much better per core performance (which is what really matters) than a 6700. Obviously a 6700k is like a 6600k but with hyper threading and can also be OC'd.

>SSD
You are getting a 250GB 850 EVO for $92. A 500GB EVO has double the storage capacity and 67% more cost. It's in your favor to get it for the bast value for your dollar. If you don't care, the 250GB is fine.

>PSU
You may need a little more power just to be safe, especially for future upgrades. Having a stronger PSU while using less of its power is also good for power consumption and the overall life of the PSU. I recommend an EVGA Supernova NEX 650 or an EVGA 650GQ. I think the NEX is fully modular. Same price as the Seasonic.

>Windows
Go to the Reddit 'Microsoft Software Swap' board and buy a Windows key for cheap. I think W10 keys are like $35 or $40. If you build before the end of July, (I think) you can still get a W7 key for $15~$25 and free upgrade within the OS. The drawback of these keys (they ARE legit) is that they lose their grace period after a few months so IF YOU REINSTALL MONTHS LATER the key doesn't work. Of course though once you activate, it's good forever for that install.

Some games can reportedly take advantage of new CPU technologies. These are very few and rare. Not sure if this is the case here. Also every new generation has a performance per clock boost, it's just rarely significant. I'm sure that with a 6600k and a 2500k both running at 4.5GHz, the 6600k is going to give you anywhere from 1~4 more frames on average games, maybe even 9 or 10 frames on a super CPU intensive game, but it is probably not worth the upgrade just for that. Your best bet is to find some CPU benchmarks for the game that don't change anything besides the CPU. Even if you can't find a 2500k vs 6600k, something like a 3570k or 4670k vs 6600k could still shed some light. If the difference is very notable, then the difference will be slightly bigger yet with the 2500k.

It literally says at least 300W of PSU for the minimum requirements.

I would be even willing to give you a 300W PSU because I have one from my long forgotten 7 year old build that I salvaged for in case.

1. Probably not

2. If you have a reasonably modern Intel CPU, you can probably get better performance out of its IGP than this piece of shit.

Built it myself in 2 hours, Runs anything 1080 / 60 I throw at it easily, never had any issues with any of the parts, runs at 60 under load.

Now go ahead tell me why I should be unhappy with my purchases.

Oh and you can also get the windows 10 pro N version for 35 bucks

Though N versions have some media stuff removed though you can find better players by default

N versions do not include certain media related technologies (Windows Media Player, Camera, Music, Movies & TV) and does not include the Skype app.

Basically all shit you can find better software elsewhere anyways like mph-hc

if you're not playing at 4k then a 1080 is overkill

drop win 10
use the money to get an ssd
also get a better case
wait for the 1060 to come out. if nothing else it'll drop prices on the 900 cards
>>
>>343967473
Those things aren't all that ridiculous though. The only real issue here is whether or not the 750W will be able to handle the i7. Intel CPU's aren't known to be huge power suckers, iirc

As of now you're only options are 8gb 480 or 1070. Maybe a 390/390x if you can find a good price. They are superior to the 480

1) get windows key off of kinguin for like 20 bucks
2) use that savings to get a 1070. if you must get a 970, get the evga ssc for 30 bucks less because its a better version
3) why spend 350 on a cpu and only 20 bucks to cool it
>>
>>343967039
Once again. Do you NEED that i7? Do you have any reason whatsoever to specifically need hyper threading? Do you know what that is? If you need hyper threading, then you already know you do. If you have to ask, you do NOT need it. an i5 6600k will be 99.999% as good for your use case and cost $110 less. Swap it.

You don't need a stupid OEM key. Follow the advice at the bottom here
>>343966772

You don't have an SSD. Now take those $150 you saved and get a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB.

You're overpaying on the PSU. You don't need this $104 overkill device. If you want to maintain the same budget, swap the PSU for something like this
http://pcpartpicker.com/product/ZNXfrH/evga-power-supply-110b10750vr

Now take that money you saved and invest it into something else. That's $40 saved. You can throw it into the case if you don't specifically want the S340 and go into like a Fractal R5, or if you're happy with your case, you could invest it into getting a quality Noctua cooler. You could also go an extra mile and put in $100 more for a GTX 1070.

It would be ideal, and yes AMD cards do tend to get better performance on the software side over time, but there are two things that still bother me

1. AMD's fetish-like obsession with delivering all data via PCIe with as little aid from things like PCIe power connectors or SLI/Xfire bridges. This shit is bad. Fuck AMD for doing this. Stop trying to overload people's fucking motherboards. MY PSU HAS 2 FUCKING PCIe POWER CONNECTORS. UTILIZE THE FUCKING PINS.

2. muh drivers/crashing

for 200 dollar 4 gig one, I would say yes.
the 1060 might try to compete for it, as Nvidia has yet to confirm that the MSRP will be 50-100 dollars below their estimated cost (assuming that their already provided cost offer is some sort of founders edition again)

>>343968289
perhaps get another 128gb SSD and do raid 1 or 0 if you got the change to spare or go bigger on a 256+gb ssd

Perhaps new ram as well. Will most likely need to upgrade the motherboard along with it.

The Sapphire nitro has an 8 pin connector so that fixes the issue and amd just released a driver today that fixed the pci connecter issue aswell.

Does that CPU have a good cooler? Is it overclocked? If no to either of these, get a good cooler and overclock it. Get an air cooler if you want great performance. Get a water cooler if you want hit or miss performance but great aesthetics, and want to spend double the money.

How about a new 3TB drive so you can have more storage space? Don't you want to store tons of anime, porn, video game installation iso's, and more? Don't you want to install much of your steam library onto another drive so you can access many games?

How about a new 500GB SSD? Do you play MMOs? Elder Scrolls / Fallout games with a shitton of mods? Other games with huge loading times like The Sims that are I/O monsters? If so, install them on the SSD. For The Sims, you can make Windows redirect the default C:\Documents\My Games mod storage location to another place on your big SSD instead, and install mods there. Google it.

How about a 2nd monitor?
In Windows 7, Aero's forced vsync on desktop would cause issues with having a 144Hz and a 60Hz display where it would cause horrible stuttering on occasion. Almost no one knows/talks about this. (for those curious you fix it by disabling and re-enabling Aero, or just disabling it for good) I THINK W10 no longer has that Aero vsync crap but I'm not 100% sure. Just a warning.

How about more RAM? 16GB is nice. You have a Samsung SSD. With the Samsung software, you can enable RAPID mode which dedicates 2GB RAM as a cache.

Nothing, unless you're doing video and image rendering. ram performance in terms of speeds improve only in long term, You could probably rock 1600mhz for the rest of your life, depending on where it goes.

Going for 16 gigs isnt a requirement, but it doesnt hurt, since ram is incredibly cheap at the moment. That's primarily why I recommend it. I program for work and for my own projects, so it sort of helps having more than 8 gigs.

>>343969467
I'm not entirely sure, sorry.
