There's really only a handful of characters gated off by the charisma stats, and that only exists to flesh out the socializing aspect, which in turn rolls into the game's main message about the preciousness of daily life. I've always had a different problem. I've been getting tired of the tried and true "fantasy world" with rolling green hills then walking for a minute and finding a desert etc and mountains and all the fantasy motifs and all that. It's neat, I'm just tired of it
And while recently the Japanese school setting has been a bit over done. I do find more modern settings a bit more compelling in my JRPGS.

Nocturne was the one I was gonna write about, but I think games like FFX trimmed a lot of fat and streamlined in a lot of great ways. Final Fantasy always sucked at exploration. Even in a game like FFVI-IX, where you had a huge 'open' world, it would only let you go to 2-3 places and block off every other area with random soldiers, parked cars or whatever.
FF is the one series where making it more streamlined was a good idea. Of course, the stories and gameplay didn't improve so it didn't matter.

Suikoden III had arguably the best story and content. But was drastically underfunded. It had so many production problems, the creator left Konami over it.
Suikoden IV was a mess. I don't see how anyone can say otherwise. The fact that a spin off tactics game improved on it says a lot. Both games were made by a different team.
Suikoden V was made by the team that did Suikoden III, minus the original writer/director/creator of the series. It tried to capture the feeling of Suikoden II, but missed its mark. Characters are bland, it has some of the worst pacing in JRPG history with a 10+ hour prologue and then long periods of dialogue after that, movement and battles are super slow thanks to the rotoscoped character models and worst of all, the story has no connection to the first three games. Its a meaningless prequel on the level of the Star Wars prequels. It even was the lowest selling Suikoden game, because Suikoden fans aren't stupid and recognized it wasn't that great.
So yes, the Suikoden series fell apart on the PS2.
