I don't know about other GTA's, but in San Andreas missions are part of mission groups; there's the Big Smoke missions, the Ryder missions etc. and the Zero missions which felt the longest because they were so annoying to do.

That shit was nightmarish. The timer didn't help. I recall I eventually cheesed it by using a helicopter to circumnavigate all the thugs guarding him.
