Depends on a lot of factors. If a company is public, it's easier to shrug off failed products launches to shareholders as the capricious whims of the public, rather than delayed products which fall 100% on employees and management.
Gearbox is private though. Chances are they realized the game was always going to be a dud, so pushing it out was, in fact, cutting their losses. Unless they reasonably thought they could hold on to it and make it better, it would be better for them in the long run to stop development and simply grab as many sales as possible.
Personally, I would have probably delayed until the Christmas season, hoping players got bored with OW and get the holiday sales. I have two guesses as to why they didn't. 1) They figured they had a sloppy turd and didn't want to waste any more resources on it, or 2) They legitimately believed they had a better product than OW and would beat it once they released.

I find this particular case fascinating because as someone that's been removed from the entire scene of competitive games, especially shooters, for a long time. I think there are a few things to consider.

Blizzard did a remarkable job with this. Everything from their initial trailer to keeping the public informed of exactly what time of game should be expected. For example, the character ability videos. 3-4 minute long videos showing exactly what to be expected from a character. Also the subsequent trailers for the game. Responding to any feminist crap with reason and logic. (Revealing Zarya, the Tracer butt thing). AND THEN LOOK AT GEARBOX. Pushing it as an e-sport, the social media presence. It's awful.
