Having only recently gotten into Morrowind I finally understand what people meant when they said guilds weren't just questlines.

Skyrim and Oblivion's guilds were just questlines with a magic, fighting, thieving or asassination theme. Morrowind's guilds actually had a good amount of services, and a lot more quests, I even enjoyed some of the chores like collecting flowers and mushrooms for the khajiit alchemist in the Balmora Mages Guild.

>>343876006
Collecting plants for Ajira is enjoyable because the way the quest is introduced to you is very natural. "Here, visit this area and have a look around, you're bound to find what you're looking for." It's almost like an adventure, as opposed to following a quest marker or buying the plants off of a vendor.

Yeah, definitely. The plants can be found in the same region, and she'll actually make research notes, which are then stolen by Galbedir, opening up another quest.

She's doing actual research, not just paying you for some ingredients.

True, but are you telling me you didn't enjoy fetching them yourself by wandering around the countryside around Balmora and exploring the Bitter Coast?

Build yourself a character that is at least capable in combat right from the start. Try out different ones if you're having trouble picking a combination you like, you don't have to play with a character you hate!
And don't look at the wiki too much if you can help it, a lot of Morrowind's fun is in the atmosphere and exploring and learning for yourself.

Nope, only mainland.

Honest ESO review from a hardcore (since old Morrowind forums even before Bethforums) lorefag.

Game is an okay themepark MMO, you can get your moneys worth and with One Tamriel they are trying to go more sandboxy. Gear design and generally most of the designs seem to be uninspired, I hate it personally, it doesn't look like TES but at the same time it doesn't go full crazy for it to be fun, they should have sticked with something.

NOW ONTO THE LORE. The lore is mostly not bad and there are some actually good additions as well as confirmations for MK tier lore, for example Wheel of Lull are directly referred to in the game...but majority of surface lore showcased in quests is cancerous garbage.
Ghosts return from their respective afterlifes at will, time travel is rampant and any apprentice mage can do it, you casually travel to Far Shores and revive Emeric despite lore implying that full resurrection is basically impossible, expect to get buttmad every five seconds as a lorefag doing quests, especially in DC.

Main quest is okay, everything related to Amulet of Kings is shit and contrived, worst thing is that they never explain where they found the Amulet because they know it would be bullshit and completely fuck up Hjalti's future find of Amulet.
>>
>>343880538
You need to keep in mind that the game is an rpg and not and action "rpg" like the gamebryo games. It's basically DnD in a real time 3d game, with "dice roll" probability based actions to hit or cast a spell or deal damage.
Chance to hit is designated by stamina, weapon skill and agility so keep those high and use your favored weapon skill, also health is God so level endurance to 100 as soon as you can.
As for magic, make the ones you need right away major skills for some fairly powerful starting spells. Over all, play the game as you would DnD and don't fuck up your character creation.

>How do I get into this game? I can't even defeat the first enemies in the very beginning.
Morrowind doesn't really ease you into things; you need to be capable-to-good in at least one weapon skill right from character creation to hold your own in combat. If you understand that, though, it's not really too difficult to manage. Don't forget, you can always (and probably should) turn down the difficulty to start off with.

He most important this is to talk to people and listen to what they have to say, especially in the tutorial, and especially people you're directed to
Remember, you're a fresh off the boat outlander. You probably don't have a good idea of what's going on.
>the very first enemies
The animals around town, or the smugglers in the cave? The smugglers should be difficult but manageable for a character that has a good enough weapon skill, but you're still level one - you're going to have to plan ahead and think about it a little.

I think this is the main reason I have a hard time getting into the game. Im always worried about not getting those +5s on level up, so I threw on a mod that just level attributes automatically as skills go up. so I don't get the feel of building a character outside the creation screen.

The best thing about Morrowind compared to Oblivion is that unlike the latter, minmaxing (while fun) is hardly necessary to making a good character. Even a completely new player who exercises a bit of sense in their character design will do well enough, and still has the opportunity to become as ungodly powerful as any other Morrowind character given enough time.

The worst you can do is make a playstyle you were hoping for more difficult for yourself than it would otherwise have been.

>>343881000
Don't forget blackmail and theft, like any good cult!
>>
>>343881596
I don't touch the slider, default is the intended way to play and raising it just means you'll enemies still won't be a threat because they're so exploitable yet you'll have to spend five minutes poking everything to death.
>>
>>343880998
>go for agility
>go for agility sign
>pick up a weapon skill and stick with it for a while before you find weapon trainers

So hard.
>>
>>343881596
Don't install those mods m8, the experience is really cheapened by streamlining.
Normal difficulty is fine if you just want to play the game, left it at 0 first playthrough and 100 afterwards, though it's just artificial.
>>
>>343880351
All cities are built in the same architectural style though.
>>
>>343882053
If you mean all the Dunmer ones, it's understandable because you're only really in the territory of Dres & Indoril. Redoran, Hlaalu and Telvanni are minor players in the ESO story.
>>
>>343881596
Pay for training? Isn't that how most people build up their character?
>>
>>343881596
Leave the slider in its default position.

Also stop fucking worrying about those shitty +5s and play the game normally. I was nine years old when first playing the game and I managed to beat it by just picking the default warrior class and smashing things in the face without paying attention to autistic optimization.
>>
>>343876145
i think that is the general strength of Morrowind. Fuck the quest marker. They tell you where to go by describing the way. Since Morrowind is actually carefully designed instead of shitting on a randomizer until the landmass resembles kinda Cyrodil or Skyrim, you don't need the quest marker.
>>
>>343882385
This.

If you don't like to think too much about character building, pick a default one instead of custom.

That's because Morrowind is a game about going out into the world and exploring it, the quests are there to make you travel and experience the world they created.

Kinda. No TES game has had ever had a mechanically compelling main quest. It's also not heavy on setpieces or other unique situations, but Morrowind was very engaging from a lore standpoint if player paid attention to was going on and didn't just accept everything at face value.

Only stat I min-max with is Intelligence. Alchemy is broken for being both incredibly powerful and incredibly easy to level up in the game, so I usually dont make it my Primary skill, so that when it comes time to level up (around 9/10 so it doesn't loop back) I just go and level up Alchemy about 10 times to guarentee my next level up with have +5 intelligence.

I dont recall the exact number you need into a certain attribute before its stats raise, but it's quite a bit. Like 2 or 3 to 1.

>>
>>343886065
Look, I can't take anyone seriously when they just say an entire game franchise, one that's the posterchild for the genre of game they're speaking of as blatantly bad or blatantly good.

Just admit it, you liked Elder Scrolls once, then it stripped the RPG elements away, and instead of becoming vilified for it, they became heralds of a "new era of RPGs" which sickened you and you turned from the fandom to never come back.

It happened to all of us, the only difference was whether we were tired and bored enough to come back and appreciate what was left of the Genre.

Sorting by quests is what got patched in later. Sorting by topic was in since day one, and has always been more useful than the actual quest logging part. Your journal logs everything anyone has ever said to you, so clicking those hyperlinks in your quest descriptions almost always leads to more context or more specific directions that you may have forgotten.

>>343885886
You think the attacks are stupid, not the mod, right? It really fucks up the early game balance when you've got full sets of the second best light armor in the game spawning next to you every time you sleep from the very beginning of the game. That's not even considering how ridiculous it is from a story perspective for them to occur before any Nerevarine shit goes down. It's personal preference for returning players, but new players should definitely use that mod if they want to play Morrowind as it was originally designed for their first run.
>>
>>343885617
>The sword was something called like "Chrysamere" or something like that, right?

Chrysamere wasn't in that tomb, some thief has it in a cave near Sadrith Mora. You're sent after it in a Legion quest.

At least in Daggerfall most of the time they just answer something along the lines of "No idea, mate. From what I remember in DF there was a limit to their patience, if you kept asking more than a couple of questions they stopped being cooperative.

Not him, but you know, it's interesting that Oblivion and Skyrim were clearly inspired by Gothic.

Morrowind was open world, but a very stilted one. It's day-night cycle was mainly a cosmetic thing, NPCs aside from guards were mostly stationary, standing in the same place night and day waiting for you to grab a quest from them.

Compared to this, Gothic games felt full of life. NPCs, including wildlife, had schedules, they reacted differently if you woke them up at night, they would go to a lake or puddle to take a bath, eat, smoke, react aggressively if you entered their homes without permission, beat you up and rob you if you angered them, but only kill you if they really hated to your guts.

And it's pretty clear that it's these simulationist elements, which the Gothic series was famous for, was a huge influence for Bethesda's direction for open world games. Oblivion and Skyrim really were all about simulationism.

Too bad that's the only thing they learned from Gothic. Although maybe combat was part of it too. I'd wager between Gothic and Neverwinter Nights (the former combining character and player skill in a simple but very efficient way including blocking and strafing, while the latter doing 3D dice roll-based combat with fully animated dodge, parry, etc.) they started to feel really bad about the whole missmissmiss thing.

>>

Anything is viable in Morrowind. It's a piss easy game, and it's simply impossible for you to fuck up. So go ahead.
>>
>>343893156
>game rewards smart players who understand the mechanics
>>
>>343892767
Yes. Having a race+class that share strengths makes you much more effective early on than a more rounded and less specialized character, but after a few levels all that really matters is what skills you actually use. The skills you use in actual gameplay is what determines everything after the very early game, most significantly the rate at which your attributes increase.

Though one suggestion/exception I would make note of: if you plan to play a primarily magic-based character, I highly suggest picking a Breton or Altmer and getting either the Mage, Apprentice, or Atronach signs. The magicka multipliers from these races/signs are very significant and playing a pure mage without them is rough until you can find/make some enchanted gear to compensate for your small magicka pool.
