This. No one wants to hire a visionary. The REASON they're hiring is because someone's already HAD vision.

Im the guy you thanked for encouraging you.
I have problems with depression a lot, and I find over my break periods this gets worse. I've tried to kill myself twice, and i've tried almost every medication a doctor could prescribe. Know what actually helps me though? Staying busy, focused and fixated on a goal. It brings meaning to your days and gives you something to keep your mind on. It's great and a large number of studies have shown that saying busy can help with depression. So, even more reason to go for it man. If you want it, you can do it. Tell yourself everyday you can do it, and you will.
I dropped out of grade 11 and started doing drugs and drinking too much. I actually had to go to rehab when I was 20. But now I have a bachelors degree and a stable career. The power of focused institutionalised Education is mind boggling - and I think it'd do wonders for you. So go for it.

But the thing is, you'll get a job somewhere at the lowest possible, work there for a few years and then be replaced by someone cheaper who did the exact same thing as you. Then you are fucked because you've got a useless degree.
Why do you think video games these days are so shitty and technologically so poorly made? Most of the people working on them are kids fresh out of some game design school.

>That feel when you're an accountant but you have no idea how your life lead to this
Accounting is one of those jobs no kid wants to be when they are older. If you ask any accountant how they got to be an accountant, none of them will know. It just kind of happens and they never really planned for it.
Man accounting is so shit. You turn off every part of your brain except the part that can handle (mostly simple) numbers and do useless shit all day. Accountants have no souls because accounting is the sort of job that destroys souls.
On the upside accounting goes all the way up and you can get paid really well if you get into a big company and work your way up. On the downside by the time this happens you'll be a shell of a man waiting for your death.

Im a registered teacher in Australia and work here is pretty stable and good. Contracted work per semester is fairly easy to come by and full time work can be given to you in as little as one semester if you prove yourself.
Paper work comes with the job though. Don't become a teacher unless you're prepared to face a mountain of work at all times. It's not like people say, you don't get weekends and holidays off with the kids, you're working your ass off at all times, weather that be in building your lesson plans, creating ILPs or ELPs, creating reports for the department of education, reports for your principal, grading work, attending meetings, yard duty etc etc.

The more prestigious schools hire more prestigious teachers, in my circle of foreign teacher friends only one has ever worked in a prestigious and he taught English at a college in America before that.
I'm not telling you this to worry, since through JET you can almost always find a school if you're capable but if you decide to stay in Japan and find yourself in need of another teaching job expect a lot more difficulty getting into a more famous school. That's really sad. Especially for the US, supposedly the leader of the 'free world'.
In Australia we grow up consuming mostly American media. TV shows, books, movies, music and even many of the things we study come from American academics like Howard Gardner. You eventually get the idea that America is this well-run fantastic place, but that bubble bursts so quickly.
Even still, i'd love to live there one day.

You can still follow your passion. Having a job in a certain field has nothing to do with your hobbies at home. You can even still design games in your free time if that's honestly what you'd like to do. But pursuing that full time is a serious waste of time and effort. Having a STEM degree basically ensures some sort of success in your future. Be proud that you got a degree in something useful, where you are much more likely to be in demand and respected than anyone with a degree in game design.

Money is not the big reason either, though it is very low when compared to the time you'll spend studying. Becoming a teacher in high school takes about five years. A preschool one, three and a half. But I'm in this for the money, so it's only marginal reason for me.

You know, it's very much the same here in Australia too. A lot of the 'non white' kids come from homes where English is the second language. I think it's beautiful living in such a multi-cultural country. It's mainly the white parents and kids that cause the trouble too, they think their shitty kids should be doing better than Johnny Brown and get angry when a kid knows two languages and needs a little extra support in his English skills.
Never underestimate the racism and stupidity of white people. The 'Non-western' whites are fine too. Oh how I wish I was ethnically Russian or German sometimes.

That's what jobs are for. No one goes to work because it's fun, they go because they have to. Even if you work for something you're passionate about, like games, do you seriously think that passion will live on until retirement?
>indie market is flooded
That's the problem. You'd just be another drone. You're romanticizing the game industry as this place full of like-minded people that play video games all the time and chill and have fun. It's nothing like that. It's like any other workplace, with schedules and bureaucracy and a sense of crippling futility.
>Why the fuck do you care about what other people think about your degree and or job
I sure as hell hope you would care. You need professional connections. You need to care what people think about you so you can make yourself look better than others. Job markets are competitive. If I were an employer and I had the choice between 2 qualified candidates for a job, but the one difference between them was that one cared how others thought about him and was conscious of the way others see him, guess who I'd take?

Sure, but one cant ignore things like cultural clashes or costs. For example, it recently came to light over here that after 7 years in the country, two thirds of immigrants don't have a job. Now, there's probably several reasons for that, but it's a problem no matter how you slice it.

>You got a degree in memology
>made partner at a Big 4 consulting firm

Looking forward to being your boss one day anons :^)

Thanks for the reply, for a few years now I've been worrying about what I'm going to do as a future, guess this sorta gives me hope.

>tfw check dA for artists taking commissions for kinky shit i'm into
>some of of the people getting regular business are shitscribble tier
>my only art experience is doodling shit on notebooks and i could probably do a better job than those fucks
can't be arsed to shell out for a tablet or scanner though but damn it all
>>343875715
Do you like it? I'm also in nursing school at the moment and doing reasonably well. Everyone keeps laughing at me because it's a "woman's job" however, including my own family.
>>343877297
You could upload your scribbles to dA, wait for some horny fuck to notice and start of with commissions on paper.
That tablet is going to pay for itself.
>>343877236
Create a separate portfolio and name for yourself when drawing your furshit so no one can follow you.
I'm 23 and going to apply for college real soon, what do I study for ez money?
Thinking about Comp, Automation, Electric engineering.
>>343877251
You can get a job in marketing and PR
>>343877347
>"woman's job"
You should probably beat your family for that.
Nurses have my utmost respect.
Hospital or old folks home?

Become a plumber
>>343877182
I'm sure some will appreciate it if you try but no one is going to get all angry if you don't learn it perfectly. I know, from experience, that a lot of people will find the way english speakers pronounce Å, Ä and Ö to be quite humourous.
You might have to inject some english into your swedish if you cant find the right words but most won't mind. Fuck, we do it ourselves. Swenglish, they call it.
You'll be just fine with 99% English, don't worry about it.
>in game design
>not ludology
its almost as though you are retarded.
>>343877347
As someone who studied a bachelors that is 98% female dominant, keep at it.
Fuck, when you're the only guy in a class of 30, your chances of finding someone who'll let you fuck them goes through the roof.
>>343877375
I don't think I can make good art with a completely separate style, though. What if someone finds out? It's too risky, anon.
>>343877347
The only nurses that are still "women" nurses are ward nurses and whatever the ones that look after the newborn kids are called.
That shit pretty much died. There are a lot of male nurses and a lot of female doctors nowadays.
>>343877389
With that artitudw you wint make ez money. Its a poor mindset. Accounting, finance are straighy forward. Cs is solud but hard work. Stay away from artsy fartsy.
Still working on my lotto degree;_;
>>343877430

normies are all falling for the college meme, and because of that there's a healthy niche left for various trades - and yes, that includes plumbing
>>343877347
Also have fun wiping asses for 2-3 years. Old people urine is the most rancid thing you'll ever smell. You'll also get the opportunity to flip a few stiffs in your time.
>>343877442
Well, sounds great.
I ask because I may have the chance to work there next year, and I'm seriously considering it.
Thanks for asking my dumb questions, I thought i'd take the opportunity while you were here. I appreciate it.

Medcuck here. Don't fret, dude. Even here in my shitty Eastern European shithole male nurses are on the rise. People may joke about it being a ''woman's job'', but being a nurse isn't easy, unless you're one of those who just becomes a glorified secretary.

You know they'll always have an eye on you, suspecting you're some sort of creepy pedophile, right?
A friend of mine works in that field, and she's very open about how men are dicriminated against. She sees no problem with it either: Of course we keep an eye on the man(they only have one) anon, don't you care about the children?

There are millions of vidja devs. Getting a job at Google or getting into Harvard is significantly harder. Also I know C++ better than most of my fellow compsci students, so there is that.

Hospital. I don't know if it translates directly to nurse since it's an academical degree.
I've already wiped old people's butts as part of internship. It's not pleasant, but not too bad either. They can't do it themselves so someone else has to, and if you ever become a parent you'll be wiping someone elses ass anyhow.
>>343876762
My father knew a guy who was in it already. The guy who was in it said I should do it, since companies are freaking out about it, and there weren't enough people doing it. And I couldn't think of anything better I wanted to do so I said fuck it, and did that.
>>343877018
I just got a job with 65k starting. I'm looking at a raise to 85k within 2 years, and a raise to 105k within 4. After that I don't know. I might get some kind of senior Cyber Security guy payment. But within the next 4 years I'll be making over 100k. So that's nice.

Not him but I understand that. I dont age
Ree but its no different than a child minder. Under no circumstances would I hire a male and if the girls are useless id care for my child myself rather than. Its archaic but i too would take caution around children and male caregivers except relatives.
>>343876129
That's actually a bad sign. A lot of people start studying game design, and after realizing how savage the job market is decide to just continue with academia, getting their doctorate and getting a cushy job as a professor. This literally makes them the rejects of the industry. The ones you really want to learn from are people with actual industry experience.
