Apparently it can be found for 60$ if you're lucky which, In my opinion, is a really good price.
An interesting idea that was both ahead of its time and executed really poorly.

At the time, it was a bad idea to buy one over the 3000, even if you were a fresh consumer without an existing UMD library to be concerned about.

That's from like 5 years ago. It can barely run modern mobile games and is nowhere near powerful enough for psp and ps2 games.
What I mean is sony obviously knows how the ps2 works and they have the chips for it or whatever. Just slap the hardware into a phone and sell it. Who the fuck would choose an iPhone over that? Sony would basically own the phone market.

If they were going to go that route, they'd be better served doing what nVidia did and making a phone that plugs into their cloud servers for streaming rather than trying to stuff dedicated silicone from a decade-old console into a new phone.
Even if they did that, where are you gonna get the games from? Sony only ever published a fraction of the PS2's library on PS3/PS4, I doubt they'd suddenly kick into high gear for a phone.

Alright, they could have a store where people can purchase the same limited selection they have on the PSN store, but also allow support for people to source their own games. Sony make a few extra quid off idiots, everyone wins.
Smooth PS2 emulation on Android is inevitable, when phones get more powerful and the emulators are more optimised. It's not a bad idea for Sony to cash in early.

The only meaningful way for them to "cash in" would be implementing hardware emulation by actually including PS2 guts in the phone, and/or selling their own Android wrappers for PS2 games, like they do on PSN.
The former option is probably not feasible or sensible for a number of reasons, and the latter option probably isn't worth the work, to be honest.
Like you said, eventually you'll be able to play PS2 games on your phones anyway, via software emulation. Then you can just get a controller accessory.

I've owned both models (3000 and Go) and the battery is roughly the same. I prefer the Go because it's way more compact and easy to take around, and I can even play with it in public and it passes itself off as a phone so I don't look like an autist.

A vita/android phone hybrid would be cool. Having the access to emulators and also it being your phone would be convenient and be the perfect entertainment device for the toilet, long trips and many other boring situations.

It's comparable to a 1/2 scale 3DS stick. So it's a little awkward.
Thankfully you'll hardly use it, the d-pad is just fine and is what you'll use most of the time. It's only really required in actual PSP games, and honestly nobody buys a Go to only play PSP games.
