They can give suggestions on how that dialogue is changed to suit the western audience. The publisher is in charge of changing things. NoA is in charge of removing content from NoJ for NA versions.

Plus, he defeats plenty of massive shades without being much more than tired by the end of each fight.
The beast that attacked the village and got Kaine trapped was a larger shade threat than anyone in the known world had ever heard of before. After the timeskip had Nier become CRAZY JACKED thanks to guilt-induced extreme shade-hunting, he and Kaine fuck that thing's shit up handily.

In terms of the first half for papa Nier, it's no longer a coming of age story. It's about introducing the world, fermenting his rage against the shades, establishing his allies and his love for his daughter. Not to mention it sets up several other characters for some tragedy to be witnessed after the time skip, so Nier can be even more pissed off about the shades, thus making the contrast between his vengeful fury and the truth behind the shades all the more striking.

Is it really that implausible that Nier has never had any desire to go and fuck around with the sand people until he had to? Or even get close to the Aerie for that matter, which basically everyone else in the world says is a town of weirdos. It was finding Weiss that kicked off his travels. I don't find the notion of him basically staying around the first town and the seaside town his whole life until then implausible at all. Perhaps he made a few trips in those directions once in a blue moon, but that doesn't mean he would have had to learn about the desert society's rules or even run into Kaine ever. Papa Nier has plenty of "love and honor" in the first half. He travels the known world because he needs the sealed verses to potentially cure Yonah, who, near the start of the game, begins to be negatively affected by the black scrawl more than ever. Why would Nier go traveling before if he was eking out a living being the village muscle and handyman while looking after his daughter?
Not to mention, it's said near the beginning that shades never had the balls to show up in the sunlight until right around then. His life was fairly slow and peaceful for the years preceding the game, aside from dealing with the occasional troubles presented by the nocturnal shades. Don't forget that Devola and Popola generally had a hand in making sure that the village walls were safe, since the villagers were essentially the shades' body crop in the original gestalt plan.
