>34K backers got a free copy of the game for donating
>44K current game owners on Steam
>Only 10K copies sold
One good thing came from MN9: the mainstream will finally learn to look at crowdfunding ideas with scrutiny. It took a colossal and unequivocal flop like this to do it, but I think people will finally spend money with their head instead of their nostalgia boner.
This is a good thing for everyone, because right now the bar is so low developers have no drive to succeed/push out a quality product. All you have to do is be a convincing con man.
>>343859487
So what are we looking at total copies acrosss all platforms? Because every display I've seen looks unsold.

Keiji Inafune and Inti Creates skillfully manipulated the masses into funding it. The timing was perfect as he was just fired, and the memory of Megaman Legends 3 was still fresh. People funded it also to spite Capcom whom they viewed as an oppressor, even after it was revealed that Inafune was in charge of several questionable decisions
>>343862268
I'm not into megaman really, I did finish a lot of them so I guess there's a certain charm, but this game is definitely not megaman. So whatever it is may be """""""fun""""""" but its neither here nor there.

Inafune didn't even say that. That was an aside from the translator. Not professional I know but fucking stop flipping out over one single quote. It doesn't take anything away from the game.
>>343864227
So you're saying you managed to beat the game effortlessly, with no difficulty? Not even the long-winded final level
>>343864337
A lot of that are rumours, especially of Wii U bricks, they didn't happen. Even if they did that's unfortunate but you still can't take away from the merits of the game.
>>343864452
If they used UE4, aimed only for PS4, Xbone and PC the game would be radically different. The ports ate up a huge amount of the budget, and drastically limited the graphics. Plus they never understood UE3 well enough to make games for it.

>>343865782
>and crashing for wiiU is hella confirmed, bricking is still in rumor territory.
Bricking is just people getting confused. Trying a soft reboot does nothing. You need to hard reboot the game.
This is the first and only game I've ever heard of that you need a hard reboot to fix though. Can you imagine how many gamestop employees had to deal with angry parents who accused the game of destroying their consoles?

Problems I have with it:

>backgrounds too washed out (concept art backgrounds look perfect)
>area boss is a mess of design
>Miriam's torso armor doesn't change
>>343867938
Feels too SOTN and not old castlevania where enemies were setup to fuck you up, and not just sit around and take hits.
>>343867938
>enemies too passive
Well yeah it's the game's tutorial area, and it's being used in a demo for E3.
>feels too slow (5-10% speedup of everything is needed)
It moves at the exact same speed as Symphony of the Night, and there's bound to be skills or power-ups that let you move faster later on. That's always the case with Iga's games, other than Harmony of Dissonance which let you forward dash from the beginning.
>Japan makes the best games
The sad thing is, if Todd Howard were to kickstart a game project, there's a non-zero chance that it would be better than this.
Here's Inti-Creates booth at AX 2016. Notice something missing? Isn't it kind of interesting that a newly released game is absent?
>>343868231

Which was too slow. Aria and others sped it up a bit.

>Never back a project that is planning to release on multiple systems.
Once again, Shovel Knight presents a good comparison. Right now, it's on pretty much every single platform, but the original release was just Windows, the 3DS, and the WiiU. Then OSX and Linus a few months later, then the PS3, PS4, Vita, and Xbone about 10 months after the original release. The releases for the Sony consoles and Xbone also came with unique content that could be available only to those consoles, because they used IP's owned by those companies. The same ended up happening with the Shovel Knight Amiibo for the Nintendo versions.
This is along side a bunch of side content coming out, for free, as additions after that initial release date.
MN9 got every single one of these things wrong. Shovel Knight was always a game easily portable between consoles. While MN9 was not and shows this in all versions, where the quality of it has suffered from not only simultaneous releases but being held back by the weakest console. Shovel Knight rolls out its "DLC," those reached by the stretch goals, after the game has already launched. MN9 tries to have everything ready by the release date, and still fucked everything up by not having shit ready to go despite multiple delays and messing up the codes people got for their content. Shovel Knight has nice bonuses for each console release that are not only exclusive to those consoles, but could never be on another console anyway, making the ports seem more than just slapping shit onto every console for more sales.
>>343865841
Best part is, Inafune was one of the people saying companies need to do new things and not rehashes.

>>343869359
He rides out the next few years until all of them are out. ReCore looks decent. But Comcept only did designs for that game, and wasn't heavily involved in it. Red Ash looks like another MN9 level disaster in the making. Notice that we've seen NOTHING of the game yet? Red Ash supposedly ships in 1 year's time and seeing nothing of it is pretty troubling. Expect a bunch of delays and then a mediocre buggy game.
The demo is just something thrown together in a day to give people something. And even then it looks like a student project.

They're doing exactly that, but I still expect the base game to take a little longer. Iga's used to working with tight deadlines and low budgets, but for most of those games his team were able to save a lot of time with reused assets from previous games, a luxury they don't have here.

>913 people backed at this tier
>$4,565 total for the tier
That's not necessarily chump change, but the base goal was 500k. The total raised was fucking $5,545,991, about 11 times more than the initial goal. $4,565 is 0.08% of that total. Not even a fucking tenth of a percentage point.
By the end of the stretch goals, each goal was measured in hundreds of thousands of dollars. It was $45,991 over the goal, losing $4,565 doesn't even bump that down. Can't you retract your backing at any point too?
Goddammit people, I know this is fucking kickstarter here, and it was only $5 dollars, but spend your money better.

Cyrosphere's weapon is only useful if you give any shits about combos, which you shouldn't because there is no reward or incentive for playing well.
Brandish's weapon is also very good because its standard attack doesn't consume ammo.
>>343880278
They should just remove that tier. Turn it into a more or less a pre-ordering system. 20-30 dollars you get the game. 60 dollars gets you some bonus shit. Done. No tiers higher than that, no tiers below that.

That was before the extreme bottlenecking of the ports came into play. Notice that they actually have lighting.
Ironically, if they got LESS money, MN9 would have turned out much better. It would have gotten funding, but avoided the ports that ruined it.
These are some poorly thought out stretch goals. PS4/Xbone are far down on the list when they should have been the first things.
>PS3/360/WiiU.
Why bother? These consoels are weak as hell and ancient. If MN9 was released on time then it would have been a really late gen game, right when the new consoles were released.
>3DS/VITA
They put zero thought into this. The 3DS was never going to be able to run UE3. They have to remake the entire game in a new engine. That surely would take more time and money than just 200,000. There's no word on when or even if the 3DS or VITA versions are ever going to come out. I can just imagine the frustration of some poor porting studio having to grapple with this right now.

Inafune's scamming the Chinese. They think he's some master game creator on par with Miyamoto. Right now Red Ash looks to be as big a bomb as MN9 was. No one cares about it and Inafune hate is high. The game would have to be amazing to turn that around.

>>343880458
The problem is kickstarter isn't just for big games or just games. $5 might make some sense if it actually got you something for a smaller project.
Though I said I'd never understand, I can vaguely see a $5 dollar "thanks" tier for some small fucking project that people might want to support. It's still dumb, but a few $5 donations might make sense on a project where a few bucks makes more of a difference.
The stupidly expensive tiers are also on a project by project basis, and are also frequently dumb, but they're dumb in another way. They often get pointless shit for ludicrously overpriced, but at that point you're technically "getting something" for your money, as overpriced as it is. And you've given so much, it at least makes more sense as a "I just want to give money to this project."
You know what? Fuck it. I'm going to count this all up in excel to see how dumb each tier was.
$60 and below, the vaguely reasonable tiers, donated 35.16% of the money but made up 68.40% of the backers. The other 64.84% of the money was donated by the other 31.60% of the backers, though they got most of it by the $250 tier (74.85% of the money and 95.11% of the backers). That's still $4,150,995, enough to get up to the Online Challenge mode stretch goal and only missing out on the 3rd playable character, prequel for PC/Consoles, prequel for handhelds, roguelike dungeon, and boss revenge mode. People above $250 are pretty much just insane, as they really only get autograph's, large map of the castle, VA's saying short messages, and the usual "get your shit in the game" nonsense. That might mean something to people, but they're each starting to cost hundreds of dollars at that tier, so it's pure enthusiast nonsense. I can't really judge the value of the rings and stained glass are. The $100 to $250 tiers get at least the soundtrack and a strategy booklet, though that's a bit over priced too (you're also getting an additional digital copy at certain tiers, too).

>>343883893
Intro stage was such a scam stretch goal basically paying for a tutorial level and a stage that sets up the game, don't know how the game would have been without it and Turbo (now hyper mode) is such bullshit
Beck moves at normal speed but the enemies are much faster and it's really unbalanced if you wanted to play buster only in Hyper mode you need to take a hit on the ladder in battilions stage with the two turrets opposite each other. And on another note, you can't even tell you're playing turbo mode because it doesn't activate straight away you have to wait 30 seconds.

That's the fun. They will release more episodes and show some of the problems of the production. Even if they try to spin it, they can't hide it.
The episode we got so far is pretty cringy. It is framed as we're seeing the magic unfold behind the scenes. They're convinced this will be a great game.
>which happens to be a one-hit death mode.
Remember when Mega Man died in one hit to anything? No I don't either.
>>343883893
I'm guessing the original plan was 6 robot masters like MM1, so the "Two more stages" were Brandish and Countershade.
Countershade's stage certainly feels rushed enough to be a stretch goal.
>>343883728
If we want to get a potential look at what a strict "$20/$30-$60" system might have looked at, let's assume no one under the $28 dollar tier would've wanted to back at all, and everyone over $60 would've still got it at the highest tier with stuff, which is now $60.
Right now, the "sane" people, the $28 to $60 dollar tiers, are 43,174 people who collectively donated $1,945,480. Enough for nearly 4 times the backing, but not the ludicrous total we see now.
We lose the $4,565 donated by 913 people and gain $1,222,320 donated by the 20,372 insane backers who are now forced to be more sane. In total, that's $3,167,800. Not 5.5 million, but still very respectable. Enough to get the WiiU port, only missing out on the previously mentioned tiers in addition to asynchronous online MP, a vita port, orchestrated tracks, and an online challenge mode.
Basically, it would've been perfectly fine. The problem is kickstarter basically encourages devs to put stupid fucking tiers because you only need a few whales to make millions of dollars extra. As long as there are stupid people will to part with a large sum of money for a hope and promise, people will be willing to accept that money with probably little scruples.
Bloodstained seems to be chugging along and while it has promised a lot, it's not promising it all at once. But it's still pretty insane behavior for people.
>>343881378
>>343883893
Let's assume the game without stretch goals would've had 8 robot master stages and a single final boss level.
There are multiple stretch goals which promise extra levels.
>TWO MORE STAGES
+2
>EXTRA END STAGE & BOSS!
+1
>INTRO STAGE & BOSS!
+1
>SINGLE PLAYER CALL STAGE & BOSS!
+1?
There are 13 stages total, one of them is for the Ray DLC.
We got an intro stage sure, and I'm pretty sure that the two extra stages ended up being both the Call and Ray levels.
The extra end stage and boss is most likely the robot factory, because there's no fucking way in hell the game wasn't gonna have a final boss level.
>>343884228
If that were true the game would've been called Mighty No. 7. They planned 8 others from the start.
This character for someone that does nothing annoys me so much. She basically just exists to be "not roll" she's cute looking but that's where the fun ends. She's wooden, her personality doesn't grow, she remains the same, she only smiles on her lifebar. You could remove her from the game and it wouldn't change a thing.
Sanda and White give more support to Beck than she does. The Mighty No.'s could have broken that one guy out of prison, she literally does nothing at all in the game other than to be as mentioned before "not roll" to drive home the point that this is a spiritual succesor to Mega Man.
Does anyone agree? I did skip a few cutscnes but in the last few she still spoke the same and had that same wooden expression on her face which is a shame because from these mugshots she looked like she could have been a fun character. Fuck, even Trinity had more character development than her and she showed up at the end of the game with less screen time.

She was created by Dr Sanda, and doesn't have any connection to Beck. Only Dr White's robots actually have any personality because he's the AI genius of the series.
If anything, Trinity is the real Roll of the series because she is actually Beck's sister.
Trinity was also one of the Call designs you could vote for.
In the grand scheme of things this means Call is a bait & switch, Inafune made her deliberately unlikeable and pointless because in a continued series, Trinity is going to be the sister with personality and purpose. She will even have the same assimilation abilities as Beck which makes sense for co-op play.

>>343884665

>Heroine contest initial sketches
Yuji Natsume you fucking pedophile. That shit is straight up perverted. Little loli running around withno pants and a key needed for her heart?
>>343884698
I think we can look at past kickstarters to see just how much blood people are out for. It's hard to imagine it being worse than MN9, and I basically can't image what that would be beyond the game literally just not working or not releasing at all.
For the tiers, all the dumb 250+ tier stuff is easily doable. Get Hayter to take 2 minutes to shit out some dumb bullshit? Sign a bunch of boxes? Print some maps? Make a 4 rings and take 3 people one a dinner date? That's all easy shit. Everything else is just get people their game and soundtrack, which, admittedly, MN9 had some problems doing.
Everything game-wise is something else. They don't actually have to do anything but the original goals by whatever release date they choose. If that's a MN9 level debacle, I can't see people pulling out the torches and pitchforks any more than they are for MN9 right now. Sure, a lot of people on /v/ are, but MN9 is otherwise just a wet fart that reviewers put at 6/10 and fans rush to defend.
The thing about whales is once you donate hundreds of dollars to a game, you're beyond the point of rationality. You just want the fucking thing, and you wait years and still sing its praises. You're more paying just to pay a ridiculous amount, at that level of spending, and you get an illogical feeling of satisfaction for being the "big contributor," despite it not actually being relatively much at this point.
>>343885126
I'm convinced Inafune did this on purpose because he wanted his design to be the actual Roll design.
>>343885081
>>In the grand scheme of things this means Call is a bait & switch
I really hope so. Trinity actually looks decent, I sincerely want Call to get phased out for real and she's just a background character that sells you shit like in the later Mega Man games.

The boss weapon he's weak to does absolute jack shit to him. I bet the weapon you get from him doesn't even confuse enemies, like the weapon he actually uses against you.
I got up to Brandish like twice and can't do it again because the cars are so fucking small and my dash distance is too far and you can't dash cancel. Really the only things I see the west being superior in are strategy, shooter, and WRPG. I honestly for the life of me cannot think of even 6 genres the west does better, or has even stood closely a chance to being equal to with the east.
I am baffled as to how they thought this dash mechanic was a good idea. Like, holy shit.
You take damage if you dash into an enemy regularly. Your only means of attack is usually a ranged attack. Enemies become vulnerable at different amounts of damage, which means there's no way to know ahead of time when you actually need to dash in to finish an enemy off.
Like, they could fix this in two ways: make all enemies become vulnerable to dashes after a universally consistent amount of damage so that you can use the dash as an actual combo rather than a separate reaction, or just fucking make Megaman you dumb fucks. Who the fuck wants two-step verification to kill every enemy in a Megaman game?

Despite the game recently coming out, it was only mentioned ONCE (in a very minor, off-handed fashion) during the entire panel. The other 99.99% of it was entirely about IC's work with past MEGAMAN titles, Capcom (no Mn9/Comcept mentions at all), and it ended with them promoting Gunvolt 2 and the new physical copies of the games.
I went in there expecting a ton of damage control and instead they just completely ignored it.
And as you said, the Mn9 section of the IC booth at the exhibition hall was totally abandoned. Me and my friends laughed our asses off when we passed by it.
I don't even know why Inafune was there, honestly. Probably just to attract people with a familiar face. And even then they only filled out maybe a quarter of the fuckhuge room they were given.

Holy shit that's insane. They're just pretending it doesn't exist now.

The stream they did was total damage control. They deleted it sadly. does anyone have backup?

>>343894284

>>343894242
I went to Bloodstained's panel, yeah.
I'll admit that I was a little let down though. It was mostly just Q&A about Iga's life and him explaining the plot of the game (with his interpreter looking more and more confused by it as time went on) which we already know. We didn't really learn anything new about the game or any new companies. They didn't even have a video or anything. Also his room was pitifully small compared to Inafune's room (ironically it also gathered a bigger crowd as well) and Iga himself seemed rather tired (he said he was suffering from jet lag).
Though I did get to shake his hand at the end of the panel, which was pretty cool. The entire crowd also got to laugh at Mn9 when someone inevitably brought it up.

>>343894930
There was. Well, not "real" internet news coverage, because despite Homestuck's absurd fanbase, it's still never gotten major press.
What happened was they had hired The Odd Gentlemen to make the game with kickstarter money. As it turned out, when the time came to check in, The Odd Gentlemen had been entirely bullshitting with a few screens and videos and had stolen the money to make other games, like King's Quest. In order to get what was left of the money, Hussie basically had let them off the hook and now we're stuck with a severely pared down version being made by amateurs.
We really only know this because someone close to Hussie leaked this before it got hastily removed. What no doubt happened was Hussie was one of those "poor/lower middle classs people who gets a shitton of money and has no idea how that needs to be managed" and signed a poor contract with the Odd Gentlemen. Seeing an opportunity, they just stole the money and it would've taken too much hassle for Hussie to get it all back with the shit contract he made. So he had to settle for what they hadn't spent and trade a get out of civil court free card for it. Add to that his father died that year and crunch of ending Homestuck, and we're left with the sad state affairs are currently in.
Don't fucking kickstart hopes and prayers, people. Even for "good" creators, if they don't know how to handle it, it can all go up in flames. It's not always a con, sometimes merely ignorant incompetence.
>>343894930
It was set to release in 2014, some of the assets were shone off, and then the main creator absconded with most of the money before announcing they were working on a new point-and-click adventureKing's Quest. It was the scam no one wants to admit to.
>>343864591

>>343899281
I'm sure a huge chunk went to VA work. I think videogame VA is currently un-unionized, which might help with costs a bit. Though that itself might cause problems with the anime VA's who I think might be union by now? they used.
Either way, VA no doubt ate up quite a bit. Advertising, even as shit as MN9's was, also eats up a lot of money. Very little needs to actually be spent on making a game, even these days. It's still no chump change, even four million can easily be eaten up if you have no idea what you're doing, but it's even more of a problem if you insist on hiring VA's for everyone and using ones with a reputation in the industry.

I checked his twitter a few days ago and he was completely silent about it. He only retweeted those who mentioned seeing his "Face in the Game" ad. You'd think that a game that Arin himself promoted, and has his face featured in it would be a game that Arin would be all over.
And the greatest irony: Remember Arin's Mega Man video? He praised the original series for adopting a "show don't tell" approach where they use the level to teach you, and criticized later games for constantly interrupting the gameplay with a helper character who never shuts up. The game Arin critiized in 2010 is exactly the game MN9 ended up being. I think Arin knows that Inafune is a con man now.

Unfortunately, that depends on what the agreement was. Like how the artist for >>343905910 was not legally obligated to do any work because the contract didn't give any parameters to legally define when he could stop working. His contract said he'd get 35k for working on the project, so he got it, did something, and stopped. Same thing could have happened here. They could have been given money for game development, but that wasn't clearly defined, so they used it how they saw fit.
It's sad, but when something is in writing, or in this case isn't, there's little that can be done. Honestly I'm more suspect of Hussie since, if it was bad faith business, then he should have no hang-ups about explaining the situation. If the Yog-ass can keep their fans after their train wreck, Homestuck definitely would.

>>343885660
Simple, Call was needed for the sake of the backers on multiple levels. As illusion to make them think their choices counted, and for added injury, insulting those who chose or preferred the Call who won by making her wooden and flat, with the runners up being barely-noticeable blueprints, and having a Call design who wasn't even remotely in the running be the real star of the story and get her own character arc.
To really show that Inafune despised his backers - not that it wasn't already clear from his choice of PR agents, who were about as phoned in as you can get. The closest analogue to this would be those "Get your character in the game" tiers for various games, and what did Inafune do with that? He made a character that was an active insult to everyone.
This shows the world of difference between an amateur and a professional, I'll say that much. Devs like Tony or Dingaling simply stuck unsavory backer designs far away from the game where they could do no harm to others and not much harm could be done to them. Inafune, on the other hand, is a businessman with decades of experience and he knows exactly how to say and do stuff in a spiteful way.
This is active subversion and sabotage of the entire original fanbase for Mighty No. 9, he made a mockery of their choices and when their choice won, he made sure it was about as far off as it could've possibly been. In the end for all of his bravado about the West, Inafune had a very clear disdain for them and he made it crystal clear with Call.

Professional designer here
I don't get to say anything about art unless it interferes with gameplay (messy backgrounds that are hard to see objects in, unclear UI, etc). The art director should catch any visual issues.
I would tell the level designers to step up their game though. However sometimes you just run out of time because the producer insists on releasing what you have. The issues in MN9's design were too fundamental to fix entirely, especially via crunch. Trust me I've seen shit like this before.
>>343910351
It's a well deserved meme, especially for those who actually pitched money to it and got less than stellar returns in the form of a shitty, buggy game with little to no transparency on what they were doing all those 3 years.
After Call E lost, I wished for this game to become an outright disaster, and when I firs saw that tight budget post, I knew from then on my prayers were answered. All those elitist pedo Call F supporters got what they wanted, a useless doormat personality robot girl with pantyshot and flat chest that tries to replace Roll for MN9, and people don't even like her voice and she never gets emotions, and she gets cucked by Call D of all designs. This just makes me laugh.
You can call us normiEs all you want, but the sad fact is you still defend a shitty buggy game that has been generally panned by critics and players. I won't even care that you might make excuses on why it turned out this way because it all comes down to really bad planning and management in the end, and Inafune would have been fired by actual executives with the way he handled this. Enjoy your already dying frachise.

A) While the 100% absorption opportunity window for each enemy is short it's also lengthy enough (about a dash and a half) so you don't need to rush like a madman.
B) The absorption hitbox is much bigger than Beck so you don't even need to rush into the enemies faces. You can just safely dash above or below them and absorb them all the same given they're stunned.

I've only done small level work, mainly in the programming sector. But to my experience, all the designs and plans, etc, are generally finalized and compiled into what you know is the GDD. All of what we plan to implement and possibly cut due to either technical reasons or scheduling is enumerated here. How often do you see this come up where you work, and would you consider MN9 a horrific mess in this regard?

not really

>>343911724
According to Inafune 40% of the money is eaten up by taxes and Kickstarter's cut. So they had 2.4 million left over. That budget is WAY too small for the ambitious game that Inafune was aiming for. He likely got more money from Publishes too he never told us about. But even then. You'd need 10 million for this. And you'd have to reduce the insane number of ports.
>>343911861
It's done in the style of "Let's see the magic unfold behind the scenes of this great game coming together". As such it's very cringy. And it makes me wonder when Ep 2 is coming out. So how much did they have staffed on this, and what was their annual salary? Let's divide and distribute.
I make less than 30k a year doing intense physically laborious activity, it's not much but it pays the bills and you have a new house or apartment in the end. It's a productive thing. I want to know how much they make from sitting on their asses and failing at programming, which I also do on the side as a hobby.
>>343912267
Optimally you want a full and mostly set in stone GDD before you exit pre-production/prototyping. It's OK to drop features after, but not add. However this is in a perfect world.
When I get into a new project the first thing I ask for is their GDD, but 4 out of 5 times I get either nothing, something they admit is out of date, or what amounts to a pile of copypaste and idea bullet points, leaving me to write the thing. Which I don't mind, I love documentation.
A lot of project culture comes down to the producer, at least where I work since they have a lot of power over a team. Usually most producers will yield to me if I insist on changing something, but I've worked under a few who, mostly due to seniority in the industry, will gladly override me or at least bring it to a compromise. Others admit they aren't well versed on the core design side and just let me do my thing.
MN9 seems like it needed a firmer vision from day 1 and that it had too many compromises along the way. A good lesson I learned is, that every time you change direction on a game, SCRAP EVERYTHING and start over. If you build over legacy things, you end up with a weird Frankenstein abomination that plays like ass.

>A Golden Axe style RPG with excellent hand drawn art for literally everything on screen is better than something with millions for it's budget that looks like a cheap IOS game
Where did the money go?
>>343912816
If they went full 2D, kept it simple, the game could have cost 300,000 and have been out years ago. Instead Unreal Engine 3, full 3D, a million ports, etc.
>>343912098
Nu-uh, Mega man is a totally original concept! He's a video game icon and every robot hero ever is a copy of him!

Fun fact:
Skullgirls holds the Guinness world record for "Most Frames of Animation per Character" with an average of 1,439 frames per fighter
>>343913171
>MN9 seems like it needed a firmer vision from day 1 and that it had too many compromises along the way. A good lesson I learned is, that every time you change direction on a game, SCRAP EVERYTHING and start over. If you build over legacy things, you end up with a weird Frankenstein abomination that plays like ass.
That's what I thought. I felt they had no idea what direction they wanted to take the whole thing and where running around with their heads cut off trying to compensate for features they apparently realized was "too expensive", (ie "tight budget") to implement and they had no fallback plans. Meanwhile my experience is that they tend to put in things like "if we can't do this then this will be the solution instead".
>>343912596
I hope they feel like slitting their wrists.

That's because you're still a child
>There are people here who defend this game despite it being an utter failure
>Same as DMC: Devil May Cry apologists
>>343913372
Well dragon's crown doesn't have too many frames of animation so that's one of the reasons why it's cheaper.
If it were along the lines of KoF13 animations the price would be significantly higher. Terry by himself took 8 months to make and cost almost $300k
>>343857035
If they only made ports to PC, Linux and Mac and actually spent their money WELL on everything else.
Would it have been good?
>>343913328
>3D is cheaper to make than 2d don't even kid yourself.
I will NEVER buy this.
According to Sh2's director the average PS1 game was 3-5 million. Average PS2 was 7-10 million. Budgets kept getting higher than there. No clue on what the numbers for Famicom and Super Famicom budgets were, but I imagine they were around the 300,000-1.5 million range.
A 2D engine with 2D assets is easier to work with, easier to port, uses less Computational power to run, etc.
>>343913432
I'm a firm believer in the system we established a while ago where any game idea needs to pass an inspection before it gets greenlit for prototyping, another to get into pre-production and a final one before full production. Then it still needs one more greenlight to release or get more funding.
Really helps cut down half-assed ideas like one shitshow that was essentially a year and a half of prototypes made off ONE piece of concept art one of the higher ups liked. The whole team assigned to that quit at the end.
>>343861971
But he's not the creator. HE'S THE CHARACTER DESIGNER
So what was the deal with the clique going apeshit defending this crap? You would think BLM's continued existence hinged on this game's review scores.
>>343913723
I remember SNK saying that they will never ever make another game that looks like KoF13 because it was just way too hard
>>343860878
Sure. It's on the backers' tab though

>>343913220
>3D games add complication
But this is on a 2D plane for a game with 2D gameplay. The complexity only comes from the graphics, but the physics engine remains the same level of difficulty as any generic 2D platformer, because the math/computation never changes. You're not asked to calculate the normal for a surface to do 3D interceptions or anything like that. Hell, the normal of something 2D is just a perpendicular line which is just swapping x and y and potentially making one of them negative. That's it. You only add complications to physics, collision and boundaries, etc, if you actually bother to address the z axis physically, not graphically.
>>343914008
He creeps me that fuck out. I can't watch his videos.
>>343913430
And the art style is completely unimpressive. I look at a nice 2D figher by Capcom, or SNK during the 90's and I think "Woah." I look at Skullgirls and go "whatever".
Look at this. Capcom did a bunch of well animated judges whom you almost NEVER see in-game. They just look and move so cool. Having no black outlines and a much better art style helps.

>>343913723
>>343913965
The 2D art is amazing but this is most likely why the new KOF is in 3D as it's too time consuming and it's cheaper just to manipulate the 3D model than drawing each individual sprite. Shame though.
>>343913382
Yeah they should have taken a Shantae approach to the design of the game.
>>343913780
You're forgetting that 2d everything has to be hand drawn and take much longer time to make. Look at >>343913723 a single character cost $300k and 8 months to make and that is just for a simple fighting game. Not to mention 2d animation for even tv shows are super expensive. A single episode of the simpsons for example cost $2million to make. One episode of one season and that isn't including voice work and how shit modern 2d animation is. 2D is super expensive
>>343914204
I'm not too fond of Skullgirl's artstyle either, but the amount of work put into it is admirable.
>>343914204
this
skullgirls, while impressive for the work, is nowhere near as good looking as retro SNK and capcom, even konami's old arcade stuff was great
those had style and charm
>>343914204
Just because you don't like the art syle doesn't mean the animation isn't fluid and well done.
>>343914043
You're missing the point. 3D modeling/animation requires a higher budget than 2D sprites, with the exception of extremely animation-intensive games, of which Mega Man is not.
>>343860881
>tfw never backed any kickstarters
>>343914043
You have it wrong. The gameplay is 2D, but the engine is still 3D, the graphics are still 3D. It increases the complication and thus budget of the title immensely.
There's a million decent looking 2D platformers put out by small teams or even single people. They have tiny budgets. Look at Rosenkreuzstilette, or the Gunvolt games, or Shovel Knight, etc etc.. Tiny budgets, tiny teams, put them out in a fraction of the time MN9 took it.
>>343914565
he never said it wasn't well done, he just finds the artstyle unimpressive
>>343914214
Some idiot's solution to that sprite thing for SNK was for them to "wait until they got people who can actually draw". For the record, finding people who knew how to draw by itself isn't the daunting task. It was a matter of getting someone who could do it so incredibly fast that it would take only mere minutes to draw a frame. This is literally impossible. They often cite those deviantartists who make their own sprite edits for KOFXIII style. But guess how long that took them to make that one frame? Most likely days, if not weeks. Just one goddamn frame. And it's often an editjob. The people who try to come up with solutions to keep 2D graphics are spoiled gay white SanFran residents, I'm sure. They haven't a clue about what work is all about and how much it takes to make something happen.
With 3D, the complexity just comes from rigging, to include SDs. After that, posing and tweaking skin deformations are all that they need to worry about, and that is definitely far from the amount of work they'd have to put in just to draw one sprite at the level KOFXIII had them, which weren't even at HD resolution.
>>343914352
This is classic cherry-picking. Most 2D games don't require nearly the time investment. And how on earth was your figure of 300K obtained?
>>343914352
>A single episode of the simpsons for example cost $2million to make.
Mostly because of expensive ass voice talent
>>343914634
>There's a million decent looking 2D platformers put out by small teams or even single people. They have tiny budgets.
>Tiny budgets, tiny teams, put them out in a fraction of the time MN9 took it.
You could say this from some 3D games though
>>343863964
>Game was tough, but rewarding.
It was only tough when you're first starting out and figuring out controls. And the occasional curveball, like the turbine section in Dynatron's stage where holding down while dashing suddenly matters even though the game's been automatically making you go low when you dash through low ceilings. Or making frozen ledges ungrabbable in Cryosphere's stage even though I don't remember there being frozen platforms in any other stage. Or Countershade's only checkpoint being before the fight with him (his level is piss-easy but tedious).
>It wasn't perfect but it's still a good spend
Good to see you at least found it okay, but this game is worth $10 MAX. Anyone who can buy this after launch, play it and think "this is worth $20" is seriously lying to themselves.
>>343915101
But they're much rarer. Why do you think that might be?
>>343914571
>You're missing the point. 3D modeling/animation requires a higher budget than 2D sprites
Not really. You're failing to measure a lot of variables in that case. To generate 2d work for the resolution that you want to work at consistently, with the same level of animation that you'd have to do for 3D modeling, is not cheaper at all. If you had simple 2D work that had choppier animation and lower resolution friendly, then yes, you'd be correct, but that's for cheap pixel artists doing simple jobs.
If you did the entirety of something like, let's say the newer Tomb Raider reboot, in 2D animation, I can assure you the budget for that would be very very intense and immeasurable compared to just working with a rigged model.
The same thing goes for Street Fighter V. Imagine all the work to make 2D sprites with the same level animation, detail and resolution as the game in 3D. You're asking for a very expensive budget.
No, I'm not missing the point at all.
>>343914634
>You have it wrong. The gameplay is 2D, but the engine is still 3D
I actually program, so no, I don't have it wrong. How about you?
>>343912280
>That budget is WAY too small for the ambitious game that Inafune was aiming for.
He was aiming for a megaman clone those shouldn't be hard to make at all.
>>343902032
Holy shit these drawings!
>>343915237
>Why do you think that might be?
Probably because most developers would make the gameplay 3D if they are already using models instead of sprites
>>343914352
>A single episode of the simpsons for example cost $2million to make.
Those shows shouldn't be used as an example as they are super bloated. The VA's ask for millions each year. As does everyone else involved. The animation is completely unimpressive.
A more apt comparison would be a standard Japanese or Western anime tv show.

>>343916080
>He was aiming for a megaman clone those shouldn't be hard to make at all.
It's not. You can do taht for 50,000, 6 months and a small team. Inafune was aiming for a multi-media empire and a current generation game with great graphics on all platforms, released at the same time.

Question:
If that were true, why is Bloodstained 3D? Why is the Nintendo platformers 3D despiste being 2D in gameplay?
Even if you are a big company like Nintendo, why won't you pick the option to "reduce the budget immensely"?Because you are wrong, thats why
