What is the etymology of "roguelike"?
>>
It's like the game rouge
>>
from english "rogue" and "like"
>>
There was a game titled Rogue, and the genre was built by others imitating it.
Really not that hard to guess.

Does the game include features from the video game Rogue?
Then its a roguelike.
What a concept.

But to what degree? Surely just having the same kind of dungeons isn't rougelike. Just having permadeath isn't rougelike. Combining all of these things together is rougelike, but what's the minimum amount of similarity you need for the game to be considered rougelike?
>>
>>343829807
The bare minimum seems to be randomly generated levels and perma-death

>Permadeath
>Random levels
This gets you to "roguelite" among purists. Add:
>RPG
>top-down tile-based graphics
And you have a "true" roguelike.

Also notable is the game Diablo and its clones, which are essentially non-permadeath roguelikes but with better graphics and additional features.

You just wanted this (You) didn't you

Like Rogue.

Tile based, turn based, permadeath, random generation. Slight deviations like multiple tile monsters or bone levels are okay but not much more than that.

You're missing the turn based aspect. That's one of the things nearly every roguelite is missing.

Playing DCSS is a bigger sin than anything else involving roguelikes.
>>
>>343831182
DCSS is the darksouls of roguelikes
