http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-07-03-three-years-on-how-does-bioshock-infinite-hold-up
>BioShock Infinite is a game that wants to have its cake and eat it, and rather than accept its limitations, rips a hole in the fabric of reality to do so. It's gaming's loftiest and most spectacular folly, a monument to the mad extremes this industry will sometimes go to in search of a better version of an idea already explored to exhaustion.
So now that the dust has settled is Infinite still the Citizen Kane of gaming?
Infinite is a middle of the road shooter, that's it.
Most definitely. I felt surge of pleasure flowing through my body when i finished it. It was like something divine and unforgottable touched my inner child. I cried, and then i came. Spectacular.
Shit gameplay, 2deep4u plot that wasn't actually that complicated, below average quality Shock game. You'd have to be some sort of idiot that plays video games for a gaming news site to like this game that much.
>>343820450
I can't believe how much cock sucking Infinite got. Was it a bad game? No, but I had to wade through thousands of retards saying it was literally the pinnacle of story telling and gameplay. Anytime I tried to critique the game, I was called a troll or hater.
Fucking hell.
>>343820450
>After playing Infinite through a second time, I dug out my original review of the game (written for Custom PC Magazine) and was surprised to find myself describe it as "the pinnacle of what the mainstream FPS can offer." Three years down the line, I couldn't feel further from that assertion.
Translation: most of my buddies were praising the game so I hopped on the train to fit in.
>>343820450
Entirely correct.
It's kind of bizarre how insanely good press it got at the time, for what is a frankenstein's monster of a game.
>>343821167

Infinite could have been great but all we got was a shitty CoD clone with some nice art direction
>>343821838
People are slowly starting to see shit when it's in front of them. Just look at the fallout 4 debacle in the fanbase.
>>343820450
One of the worst games I have ever played. It is more than just bad, it's insultingly bad.
>>343822053
It also had a nice soundtrack
>>343821194
It had a 200 million dollar marketing budget. Do you think the reviewers were going to give it a bad score when their sites and magazines were being paid that well via ad revenue?
>>343820450
Incredibly imaginative and original art direction and story that has a thematic scope and is handled with the kind of style, vision and maturity that most AAA games can only dream of. Still one of the benchmarks in video game storytelling. The Burial at Sea DLCs are just as great, if not even better.
The art design is so fantastic
However, then there's the rest.
I always felt that Infinite landed like a brick for me because of The Last of Us. Everything with Elizabeth felt flat, from her gameplay use to the forced and incredibly clumsy "bonding" between the two.
The Last of Us covered similar ground with far more resonance.
And Infinite's gunplay never quite clicked for me - I think Infinite and the original Bioshock's shooting mechanics are much more inferior than most admit.
But I'm also the guy who thinks Bioshock 2 is the pinnacle of the series, so I'm a heretic.
It's just a shooter in a unique setting, like all of the Bioshock games.
Didn't deserve the hate here or the enormous praise elsewhere.
Can we all safely agree that Silent Hill 2 and Shadow of the Colossus are shit as well ad haven't aged well at all?
>>343822378
Even that was lazy.
The police at the fair are all tattered and bare even before things start going tits up. The civilians you get to stand and look at for a long time are repeated from a very small pool, while random fuckoffs you never get to see clearly have tons of variety.
>>343822441
>But I'm also the guy who thinks Bioshock 2 is the pinnacle of the series, so I'm a heretic.
That is a pretty common opinion on /v/. Bioshock 2 had the most solid gameplay of the Bioshocks.
BioShock Infinite still has one of the best uses of licensed music of any game I've ever played.
The steam organ cover of 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' is a particular favorite (it's still my ringtone)... but aside from sounding great and helping to make Columbia a more immersive place, the modern songs reworked in a more era-suitable style were a clever way of subtly introducing some of the big plot points to come later in the game.

The plot and its reception is probably the most laughable thing about this game.
Everyone was praising it like it was some sort of revolutionary form of storytelling that tackled serious themes.
You start playing the game, and what happens? They fucking pussy out of everything and then go fucking stupid at the end for the sake of having a "twist". It took the game into Saturday morning cartoon tier.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdNhwb7iuI4
pretty telling of the industry to go so apeshit over the concept of multiverse.
Infinite was a marvellous game, rates (to me) as 2nd in the series (right behind Bioshock). Ok, it did fall short in one or two areas. But overall, i liked this.
Been meaning to replay Infinite for a while, but alas i lent it to a friend whom has since moved away.
>>343820450
>lets give games inflated scores because we're basicly billion dollar publishers extended PR firms
>then lets go back years later and admit that the games weren't even that good in attempt to pretend we're not biased
>oops can't change that metacritic score :^)
I'm a big fan of all the Shock games, I love action-RPG style games and Bioshock 1 really hit a nerve for me. It's one of the few games I replayed a few times.
Bioshock Infinite was extremely ambitious and I agree it fell short in some areas. But compare it to any other FPS/RPG of the last decade and I'd argue it will still appear in the top 20. I am yet to replay it and the DLC, but that's due to the tsunami of games the last few years.
Some have mentioned Dishonoured trumping it, and I'll respectfully disagree with that. Dishonored is fantastic, and in many ways plays on the riffs the Thief and Shock series created. I'm very much looking forward to the 2nd game it's as close to a new Shock game as we're likely to get. The new Deus Ex is also something to look forward to.

Bioshock Infinite is honestly one of the worst games I've ever played. I even played through the entire thing. It got worse as it went on.
It wasn't just bad either, it was offensive as it thought of itself as amazing, as god's gift to gaming. I can put up with a bad game that isn't presumptuous, but I will hate a bad game that is presumptuous forever and Bioshock Infinite is quite possibly the most presumptuous and pretentious game of all time.

Man, what a game.
I was never really interested in the Bioshock series due to its art theme and gameplay system in Bioshock and Bioshock 2. Therefore I didn't really pay attention to Bioshock Infinite despite the crazily high score critics and reviewers are giving the game. The reason why I play this game is that I have finished all the games I want to play this summer and I still have time. I'm totally amazed by how good the game is. The graphics are gorgeous, the gameplay is smooth and fun, and the story is one of the best I have ever seen. The shooting can be a little tedious at times in the middle and later part of the game, but the difficulty of the combat grasps my attention well enough to go through the confusing development of the plot. The ending doesn't seem to make sense at first, but after reading some articles about it and then playing a second time, I fully understand and appreciate how good the story line is. It's basically the inception among games. The navigation can be really frustrating as it keeps telling me to get on the skyline and slide around in circles for no reason. Still, nothing really takes away the thrill and excitement of this masterpiece.

there's a reason historians say that history can't be properly judged/analyzed until at least a generation's time as passed, senpai.
This game was a masterpiece, but like most masterpieces it's not without flaws. The first thing you will notice is that it is visually stunning. I found myself in awe of its beauty over and over as the story progressed through various environments. The portrayal and development of characters was superb. The game unfolds like a road movie- you're on a great journey with a companion, and your relationship has its ups and downs. Elizabeth is so convincingly brought to life that you'll find yourself talking to the screen, and when the journey is over you'll miss her. The gameplay is great fun. The weapons and character abilities are innovative and a blast to use. They are simple to use but difficult to master, and you'll want to replay the game once you get the hang of things. In many ways, this game raises the bar for game developers. The team that created this obviously poured out their heart and soul and it shows at every turn, but having said that, it's not perfect. You don't get to choose or design the character you play, the part is thrust on you. A lot of times I felt that I was playing the role of a bit of a jerk. The biggest flaw in the game is that it's linear and you really can't make any meaningful choices in how things eventually play out- you're basically along for the ride. It tells a story, and once you learn the ending it doesn't get any fresher in subsequent play-throughs.
>>343825030
Gunplay was better. People act like 1 and 2 have great gunplay and they are mediocre at best. What makes gunplay in 1 and 2 any way better?

Environments were reduced to the point of insanity. They were garbage. The idea could have been nice but the actual development was basically just a corridor with a skybox.
The gunplay was trash. I agree that gunplay was mediocre in 1, although 2 did improve it some. All was undone by 3 however, which had boring guns that handled poorly with a 2 weapon limit.
In my 29 years of gaming I had never felt more engaged by a story and a setting. This game changed my expectations permanently. I have never been so immersed in a gaming experience.

No, YOU fuck off. Idiots like you spewing your cancerous, shit-tier opinions without a single fucking thought in your tiny head is how we ended up with the goddamn DISASTER that is the HD collection in the first place.
How about you get some fucking taste?
It was an extremely captivating gaming experience. The gameplay is good, the story is wonderfully told and the world is worth the purchase alone. In a market saturated by "HOORA AMERICA"shooters (Battlefield, Call of Duty, Homefront, Medal of Honor), it's refreshing to see a game tear American Exceptionalism apart. While the gameplay is pretty solid, the real stars are the story and the world. The developers took a lot of big risks in this game, with a lot of decisions that could have easily backfired and ruined the whole experience. The fact that everything works so well together is remarkable in its own right. I think calling it "The greatest game of all time" like some other reviewers are is kind of a stretch, but certainly I don't think anything else coming out this year will even approach the quality of Bioshock Infinite. If you liked the first Bioshock, you probably already have this game, but if you don't you owe it to yourself to get this. If you felt that the gameplay was dull in the original Bioshock or that that lack of subtlety in dealing with broader philosophical and political concepts was problematic, you're going to find the same issues here. However, I absolutely loved the experience.

>>343826087
I'm dead serious. I'm tired of all the walking around that games make you do. If games are going to grow as an artform, they need to focus on what makes them special and that's the cutscenes and storytelling. If you give the "player" too much freedom you risk them misunderstanding the message or experiencing it in a way that deviates from what we design. The best thing to do here is to remove these superfluous elements entirely. As an added bonus this saves time so the developer can focus more on the cutscenes that bring the game to life.
>>343826505
Yes they did.
If you hated everything about the original BioShock, don't bother with this game, it's very similar in many ways. However, once you get that out of the way, it's a much better version of it than the previous two. For example, while combat is still the same setup (replace plasmid with vigor) and enemies still can feel a little bullet-spongy (I recommend turning off health meters in the options menu, as well as most other HUD notifications), most encounters take place in these big open areas that are also densely packed with cool tactical options. The result is some thrilling and crazy combat moments that in most games would be heavily scripted. No more "electrocute-wrench" through the whole game. Graphically, you can sometimes see some flat textures up close reminding you that this is a game that has been worked on for 6 years, but on the whole it is quite gorgeous. Nice to play an FPS that doesn't look like a brown and grey modern military shooter or a future space war that might as well be a military shooter for how it looks.
On that note, this game has the best storytelling since Half-Life 2. No sitting through pre-rendered cutscenes full of people spewing exposition at you. Just exploring the environment explains what's going on in the world and hints at some weird stuff behind the surface. This game also deals with racism and religious fundamentalism in a far less heavy handed manner than you would expect. Nice to play a game that doesn't treat you like a moron who can't follow a simple story.
So in summary: Yes, if you go into this game expecting it to be the industry-changing miracle some people are making it out to be, you will be let down. But if you go in expecting an FPS that is far more immersive, original and entertaining than 95% of what you've played in the last few years, you'll get it. Hell, it's basically a 10-hour escort mission with a character you still care about by the end and never get annoyed with. That alone deserves some kudos.

>>343826759
Besides the critic reviews that praised it as the second coming of Christ?
>>343826698
No you piece of shit you shouldn't even have the second corridor. I'm serious here. By removing the ability to move your character it ensures that the player looks where the developer wants them to look and experiences what the developer wants them to see and hears what they want them to hear. We can ensure the player feels and experiences the story as it is intended without any delay or confusion or distraction.
While this game is short, I feel that if it was longer it would have detracted from the experience. If you do not play this game, then at least watch a friend play it. This is an amazing game beyond what I expected from any game in 2013. The only problem I see is that games now have to live up to this standard.

Someone reviewed this and said "What a great fight! It completely fits the tone of the rest of the game and isn't retarded or fucking tedious as hell"
>>343826861
Gameplay-wise it's just mediocre.
The issue here is that it is a step back in every way from the previous games in the series as far as gameplay goes. Thus it gets judged much more harshly since it could have been good in that department. Even if it made no changes at all instead of correcting existing weak points it would have been better than what it ended up with. That moves it from mediocre to bad, similar to Fallout 4.
What makes it terrible though is how fucking stupid and annoying the writing is. It is so incredibly stuck up its own ass and beats you over the head with everything without a hint of subtly, insight or self-awareness.
A bad game is one thing but a bad game that thinks it is the second coming of christ and goes out of its way to be as insulting as possible is going to be hated.
>>343820450

This is more than just a great game, it is a great work of art. The game is executed in a way that only can be done through video games. If this were a movie it wouldn't work. This is the game that may bring respect to videogames as an art form.

>Reviews from 2015 when it is already established people turned on it
I had doubts before preordering the game, but I gave it a shot, since I loved the bioshock games from the past, and I always liked the atmosphere which is unique to this game, no game has this kind of graphics, and sounds, and environment.
The gameplay, as always, fun to play, and not to easy, but possible, (not like those games that you die a thousand times to move on).
In addition to that, you have a unique companion, that aids you in many ways, Elizabeth will through you a coin she found, or a shotgun when you are out of ammo, also, her character is something I never saw, she moves along with you, not after you, she interacts with the world, like it was real, she would tell you her opinion or just go around and look.
If you love singleplayer games, and are looking for something fresh that no other game can offer, give this a shot, you won't be disappointed.

For the gameplay on 1999 mode everything up until that point I felt like I was forcing myself to continue playing. It got to the point where I was just abusing that invincibility exploit from the rails because of how shit it was dealing with the enemies. When I finally got to that I just outright quit because of how terrible it was. Granted, it's been so long that I don't know specifically what was wrong but I think I remember that dumb bitch being invulnerable and one-shotting you constantly. Actually her second phase was when I ALT + F4'd and uninstalled.
It's funny, only Bioshock Infinite and Fallout 4 have ever made me feel bad that I got them for free, because of how bad they were.
Every once in a while a game comes out that blows your socks off. This game goes above in beyond in all areas. Superior story telling, combat, atmosphere, music. You feel immersed in the world and unable to quit playing. The details in the areas show the care given by the development team. This game was not rushed and will serve as proof to what games can accomplish. This game accomplishes what Half-Life did for its time period. I think Ken Levine said it best when referred to games as a better medium than movies and books because you pilot them. You get to participate and experience them. This is nothing short of a masterpiece and should be purchased by everyone.
>>343828347
If his friend liked Bioshock infinite then thee is strong evidence they have shit taste.
>>343828543
did you copypaste this from steam or metacritic?
Never played it, honestly got my fill of this series after the first 2 games. From what I gather though it's not particularly good outside of being the vidya equivalent of Oscar bait.
Bioshock infinite is very beautiful. The gameplay is smooth and fun, the atmosphere is so detailed, and the theme is mature. Alot of effort has been put into this game and it shows. Easily deserves its critical acclaim.
If it was possible to give a game an 11/10 then this would be it. Unlike Bioshock 2 this game is extremely original. It's also made by the same team who made the original Bioshock (aka highest rated FPS of all time). The game is polished, emotional, engaging and just breath taking. Just walking around the environments feels nice. Not only is this game of the year material, but it's also literally the best video game I've played in the past 5 years.

The story is retarded, the gameplay is worse than a shooter from 2007, and even on 1999 Mode the game is piss easy because Elizabeth just throws you whatever you need and there's no incentive to protect her. Worst of all, the entire game was a complete rewrite months from launch because Levine is a hack. They didn't even change the massive build up to the fight with Songbird and just left you with a five second "he's an ally now" writing.
I've never seen a bigger example of "journalists" being complete morons and just an arm of the devs PR.

For fucks sakes, how could anyone fight that goddamn ghost three times and go HMMM YEAH 10/10 NO FLAWS?
I rank this game up with half life standards, from beginning to end it is phenomenal, elizabeth is not only a extremely loveable character but also the best sidekick that ive had in a long time, AI is amazing! Initially Booker and Elizabeth wre a simple rip off of the couple from the Conjuring, Brawl and Super Natural, you can see this in early footage, as time went on Levine changed direction every couple of months, the entire bioshock team was sick and tired of Levine schizophrenia.

I always hated Bioshock Infinite. The plot was literally garbage, and not just garbage in that it was bad, garbage in that it retroactively ruined the other Bioshock games by making them part of a retarded multiple-universe plot whose very existence was a contrived excuse for them to keep making shitty Bioshock games with the same fucking premise over and over.

It's not a masterpiece from a gameplay perspective but I still think the whole time travelling / parallel universe/ alternate realities plot was fantastically well done, and the big reveal at the end *was* masterful. It blew me away when I first experienced it, and had me thinking about it and turning it over in my mind for weeks afterwards. Hardly any other game has done that, and only a handful of special films, so for me, giving me that memorable experience outweighs any of the failings elsewhere.
>>343830271
I still can't believe this got made.

Even at the time I knew there would eventually be a bit of a backlash against Infinite, it always occurred to me that people were praising the wrong things about the game. Nevertheless it remains a game I'll always defend a little because despite not being the game people thought it was, or as an actual game as good as something like Half-Life 2 (easily top 3 favourite all time game for me), it remains an exceptional experience for the people for whom it resonates with.
>>343831935
>It's not a masterpiece from a gameplay perspective but I still think the whole time travelling / parallel universe/ alternate realities plot was fantastically well done, and the big reveal at the end *was* masterful
How did you feel about the DLC completely retconning the ending and revealing it was a massive waste of time?
Absolutely not disagreeing with anything in this analysis as I don't really look for anything especially deep in my games but I will say I enjoyed it from a gameplay perspective and it was pretty fantastic from an aesthetic point of view. Anything that reminds me of Laputa or Steel Empire can't be all bad.
>>343828096
He's probably not a virgin though
I got this game and the DLC during the Steam sale because I had gift card money to spend. Did I actually fuck up? My expectations aren't very high, and I'm aware that the story isn't worth all the praise it got, but I figured it would at least be a decent single-player shooter.
I skipped some other games I thought I was going to buy, because they weren't as cheap as they were last summer... but BioShock Infinite never seems to go below $7.49 no matter how long I wait, and I didn't want to wait any more.
>>343832217
It's debatable and controversial, but you don't have to think of it as canon. After all, it is DLC and an afterthought. I think the premise and universe of Infinite allows for interpretation more than concrete plot succession.

Once you get past the fact that the story is just a video-game-tier story and that normies were stupid as fuck for treating it like Shakespeare, is the game actually fun to play?
>>343830307
It doesn't even go into detail about how the gameplay itself feels trivial and simple. Doom has more complex enemy-player interactions. The guns are uninspired and the upgrade mechanic is dull and pointlessly mandatory since enemies get more hp later on anyway, all the tonics outside of a couple are redundant as hell, and Elizabeth adds nothing to the gameplay other than a resource vending machine. I'm sure there's more but I only played it through once at release.
>>343833113
Imbalance doesn't exist in a single player game
>>343833113
It wasn't generic. It was a bit unbalanced with some of the builds you can set up, but that's not a real problem since trying to set up fun combos and abilities is great in games.
>>343831935
>It's not a masterpiece from a gameplay perspective but I still think the whole time travelling / parallel universe/ alternate realities plot was fantastically well done, and the big reveal at the end *was* masterful.
How? The game didn't take advantage of any of these themes and concepts. It doesn't even make sense and it was retconned anyways. I want you to think about yourself for a moment. If you had access to infinite universes, that would alter your perception of everything, especially if you could jump and live in those other worlds. To any normal person, this would cause extreme feelings of insignificance, yet hardly anything is explored about these themes. Booker and Slut just jump universes when it's convenient to jump over obstacles and don't really talk about it. The only exploration of themes regarding character reactions to the possibility of alternate universes comes at the very end and that doesn't even have any impact. It's drama for the sake of drama. Also alternate universes are time travel now for some reason. This shit was written by a hack and it was only made for the sake of "looking cool".
>>343833151

Actually, I got this: http://store.steampowered.com/sub/40402/
I wanted the DLC and this seemed like the cheapest way to get it.
I didn't buy the triple pack for two reasons:
1) Although it seems the pack is set up to deduct the cost of games you already own, I would have been forced to pay for the original BioShock again, because the copy I own is not a Steam copy. This means the triple pack would not have made Infinite any cheaper.
2) The triple pack does not have any of the BioShock Infinite DLC.

You are right about 2 being the best in the series though. It has so many great things about it. The Guns are better, the plasmids are better, everything is lovely.
>Pistol? Pistols are boring, RIVET GUN!
>Crossbow? HARPOON GUN?
>Wrench? DRILLS!
And then there's the plasmids. I loved the ones that let you mess with security bots, healing them and even giving them little names. You get attached to the little fucks. The way it gives plasmids new abilities when you upgrade them instead of just making them cost more and deal more damage is great too. In Bioshock 1 you NEVER need to upgrade plasmids since the best thing about them is the secondary effects (freezing, stunning, burning, electrocuting pools etc) which they do just fine at level 1. Upgrading them just makes them less expensive making them less useful. In Bioshock 2 they get nice new abilities to go along with the upgrades, making it useful to actually do so.
I also like how it groups all your gene tonics together. Arbitrarily splitting them into 3 groups of 2-6 in Bioshock 1 led to everyone ending up upgraded in all areas and doing everything reasonably well. In Bioshock 2 since you get to fill yourself out however you want you can specialize making for some much more interesting builds and playstyles.
The Camera game is better too, and it was already good in Bioshock 1. Making it a running camera where you try to fight in different and exciting ways to get the most data really spices it up.
Maybe its because I didn't expect anything from Bioshock 2 but it ended up being really, really great.

It's got a criminal lack of replay value that undermines it's upgrade system.

i liked it. i didnt think the plot or characters were anything special at all. fuck if i can remember any of their names or motives, but i thought the gameplay was more fun than bioshock 1 and playing as a big daddy was really cool.

Why? I knew when I bought it that Steam has a two-week automatic refund window. This. It takes the usual FPS weapon roster and makes each role feel unique and wonderful, and in orverall it is simply a game that does what every sequel should do, build upon the first game. I'm in the middle of the second bioshock so I don't completely know the story yet but so far it's not god tier, good gameplay though.
The only bad thing about infinite I found was that the story dragged on until the end when everything sped up a bit.

I thought it was nice too, a step up from System Shock hacking in most ways.
I normally don't care for "minigames" for things like lockpicking but Bioshock 1 balanced it pretty well.
I do think Bioshock 2 did it better, since it doesn't pause the game when you're doing the minigame it does. Makes the game more fluid and exciting and hacking more of a tactical choice, while also a bit trickier.

>The way it gives plasmids new abilities when you upgrade them instead of just making them cost more and deal more damage is great too.
It even made some of the less useful plasmids useful or more fun.
Decoy for instance letting you damage enemies by reflecting the attacks back on them, or even healing yourself for the damage they deal to themselves at max level.
The one where you can astral project is great too. Combine it with the tonic that lets you restore even when you're in water and you're good to go. Stand by a leaky toilet by a bathroom, astral project and travel around the level blasting everyone with lightning or fire!
I'd like the upgrade system more if the game had some form of New Game+
But it doesn't.

Such as? I'm not a Matthew fan, by the way, and I think the Infinite review is the only quality thing he has made.
>The only thing he said that was objective was that the vigors were similar in function, but it's his OPINION that that was a problem.
The two weapon system and upgrade system were objectively bad systems.
>Unfortunately, the entire enterprise is undermined by Infinite's appallingly simplistic portrayal of the rebellion that boils up beneath Finktown. Within the space of a couple of hours, we see Daisy Fitzroy go from downtrodden leader of the Vox to blood-crazed psychopath, smearing her face in the blood of the fallen Fink, and even threatening to murder a child on the grounds that he'll grow up to be another despotic aristocrat.
Hence the only non-white character Infinite lends a voice to becomes the exact kind of monstrous caricature portrayed in Comstock's House of Heroes. We also hear DeWitt repeatedly emphasise that there is no difference whatsoever between Comstock and Fitzroy, which is an astoundingly asinine assertion. Criticising a bloody uprising is fair enough, but to tar racism and revolution with the same brush and then dismiss the entire topic? That isn't just oversimplification, that's verging on cowardice.
Apparently it did not strike the writer as unrealistic that the game had fictitious floating city ruled by white with an oppressive class and race system, special drinks that give you power, half-man half-robots and mythical giant flying creatures but when his beloved socialism was taken to it's logical conclusion of destruction of the aristocracy, the killing of a child was suddenly too naive of a portrayal. On top of this, having that character be a non-white was too much for his delicate sensibilities. But nothing seemed out of place to him up until the point where he found something that went against his political beliefs.
>>343837554

Its a fair point, though. There was nothing of value to be taken from Bioshock Infinite's story. What were we supposed to get, 'racism is bad'? That's pretty fucking tame considering all the praise this game got for pushing the medium forward.

The fights themselves hold up really well in SotC.

>>343838859
The horse controls better than any other horse in a game and it gives you multiple means to ride him.
Like, he actually has some input in where you move, which is really cool.
>>343820450
The story was fine but everything else felt subtracted from the previous titles, combat was more rigid and demanding that you only play with weapon combinations that THEY gave you. Exploration was boiled down to running back and forth down a corridor solving a "puzzle". There were no interesting combinations of tonics or the ability to use them in creative ways.
I would have rather watched Infinite then played it, I can go back to 1 and 2 and change my play styles up or do challenge runs but I cant do that with Infinite, especially when it came to the choices and it going "fuck you, none of it mattered, one ending only"
>>343839171
The horse likes to control itself too much. It was a chore to get anywhere.
>>343838809
That wasn't my point. The story did not seem out of place and superficial to him until the revolution was handled comically, in his eyes. There was nothing caricature-ish about anything else until a black person became violent. Everything else the evil whites did was of course, very believable.

This dude is an idiot. He makes some decent points, but he also makes a handful of points that are outlandish. One huge point of contention he had was how the divergent timelines plot point makes no sense. The game explains it thoroughly by establishing the point of variables and constants, and he just rejects the game's explanation and calls it dumb.
Which isn't an argument against it not making sense. It establishes its own rules and follows them fine. Just because he doesn't like the plot mechanic doesn't make the game make no sense.
>>343839345
>The story was fine
Remember in Finkton when you have to get guns for the Vox, so you jump universes to get guns to give them?

>>343840752
>Where am I defending his decisions?
The following sentence, where you handwave criticism away from legitimate story telling flaws. "Constants and variables" is broken by the game's own story, with the ending being a meaningless endeavor that is undone without any explanation as to why.
Like or dislike the idea of constants and variables all you want, but Infinite does not follow its own structure for time travel or regarding the multiverses.
> Matthewmatosis's entire critique hinges on him just disliking 'constants and variables,' and critiquing the game as if it didn't explain its own time travel mechanics.

>It wasn't work, it was tedium. You're acting as if this was a Halo situation, or a Doom situation, where the weapons are diverse and fun and you're encouraged to swap shit up. This was a fucking slog.

Then you're retarded, thanks for letting us all know yet again.

>Though you do come off as a needy woman that has to have a weapon wheel and can't just pick up the best gun, which is provided.
There is no 'best gun' in Infinite, every gun is ass and combat feels slippery and unsatisfying. You're just dumb, dude.
>>343845716
not an argument
>>343831883
you forgot what made the game actually shit, which was the terrible level design and gunplay

>>343845779

fucking this, the guns are all fucking awful, even with upgrades they are just unfun as fuck to shoot, aside from the shotgun and the pistol, which surprise surprise, you can't use at the end do to "lolnoammo"
>>343845172
Definitely agree with your first point, most weapons i can recall were just Vox version of the columbian weapons, the most fun weapon i remember was the Gatling gun but you so rarely found ammo for that shit that you never used it unless it was a boss fight or a major battle and even then your limiting yourself to 1 main use weapon then.

I think you just figured out the mystery as to why reviewers love it
>>343847248
reviewers dont score games based on gameplay. they score it on politics, how cinematic it is, and to a lesser extent the graphics.
infinite really lost its momentum in the second half the game
i tried replaying it recently and the atmosphere in the first 6 hours was still superb but i ended up getting bored and uninstalling with the meh gameplay
shame they completely dumbed down plasmids and the other RPG aspects
>>343847421
>infinite really lost its momentum after the first hour
fixed that for you
>>343847248
Not really. Most video game reviewers are dumb, and most are desperate to make video games seem more mature.
It also helps that they had that gamejournopros thing in order to groupthink.
>>343847094
No. Start over. You posted shit responding to me. You linked to hissy fits on the level of, well, doom isn't like this.
No shit? Doom isn't like any Bioshock. At all. I say it's at the bottom of problems and in a way the only interesting aspect during fire fights.
Counterargument please. Detailed or at least semi in depth.
>it's a good narrative makes the shit game good episode
The funny thing is that the story is fucking awful. Why did so many people eat this shit up as deep or meaningful?
>>343839583
Yea, but that's the thing, the divergent timelines thing doesn't make sense. At all. There's a big point in the game where you go to another timeline to get the gunmaking equipment for people in your current timeline. And then you get there and only then do Booker and Elizabeth realize they have no idea how they're going to get these huge machines back to the chinese guy in this timeline who makes guns, or how that's going to help the people in their own timeline they're supposed to be getting the guns for. So they just go to another timeline for no reason. It's been a few years since I played it but I remember this being a big point where I just stared at the screen and asked what exactly was going on with this story and where the hell was it going, and apparently the answer was nowhere, or maybe I would've figured it out if I'd bothered to hunt through trashcans for audiologs. The story was a mess and felt like it had been chopped together, with crucial parts missing.
>>343847751
oh yes you yourself gave so many in depth and detailed arguments
>you posted shit responding to me
you mean the arguments I made were in response to your posts as a counter argument?
remember you started this whole argument
I merely said that the 2 weapon limit, shit upgrade system and bullet sponge enemies were one of the biggest problems with the game
you threw an autistic fit assuming I didn't also hate the level design and story, while stating how little the 2 weapon limit and such mattered to you, yet here you are, still responding.
When you take away a feature that all the previous games had, and you get so much flak for it you include it back in the DLC, you know you fucked up.
(note that in both posts I said one of the biggest problems, not the biggest problem, you may want to get your eyes checked, or at least cool down your autism.)
>>343847751
For a guy who claims he doesn't care about this shit, you sure really care about this shit.
>>343848350
So, nothing. Big surprise. Have a nice summer.
>>343848553
You have provided zero arguments for why it's anything other than horrible donkey shit, while me and others have already told you why we believe it's terrible. For someone so uninterested about this you sure do like to argue about it.
I will leave you with this
>shock series never had a 2 weapon limit and had upgrades that actually worked as well as a fair ammo system
>infinite has none of these plus a plethora of bullet sponge enemies
>oh gee why does this bother you guys so much?
>>343846184
It wasn't great, it was good. Looking back now I slightly cringe on how I didn't notice how obviously horrid it was. However, despite all odds I still had a fun experience.
>>343822775
the story wasn't what sold me but the artistic direction of the world and the visuals are simply mind boggling to me. I loved how the floating city actually had numerous interesting mechanisms designed to support the narrative, like the sky rail and the detachable city blocks.
I was honestly pretty impressed by the racist museum

>>343849308
That show is pretty good mate.
1 and 2 were way better than Infinite. It sucks that Infinite got critical acclaim because it's by far the worst Bioshock.
Why is it even labelled as a bioshock game? Literally nothing besides the weird bullshit ending connection is related to the first two games.
>>343831205
>not having a plot twist is a negative
>BS2's plot is a negative
>tons of RPG elements a negative
I agree with most of those, but these are wrong.
>>343849773
Well, SS2 has tons of RPG elements but they're poorly thought out. Lots of things are almost worthless unless you're trying to challenge yourself.
>>343849308
Why does anyone take game reviews seriously, when the whole system is so obviously biased? If you say anything the publisher doesn't like, they blacklist you, don't send you early copies, and your review site loses business. Of course you aren't going to rock the boat

I think he's just pointing out that Bioshock Infinite just ripped off the same plot from Bioshock 2.

Not to defend or anyhting, but point 1 is a problem in almost every fps ever
I loved Infinitebecause it was my first FPS.
What was the original ending supposed to be because Booker as Comstock was something from later in development and it really shows
I judge games via a second playthrough, and I couldn't play through Infinite a second time, so that pretty much knocks it out of elite tier for me.
Plot stupidity aside, it was a decent FPS that had a novel companion mechanic. Game got pretty repetitive pretty quick though and some of the more "challenging" bits were more frustrating than challenging (fuck that fucking ghost right in its fucking ghost vagina).
Upgrade system was retarded. I mean really retarded. There are a million FPSes out there with a million different upgrade systems, and Infinite chose the worst one.
Vigors were cool. This and Dishonored brought some fun stuff to their respective genres, respect.
The DLC storyline should've been the main storyline, or at least integrated into it somehow. The ending to Infinite fucking blew dicks, the DLC's ending should've been how it ended, with both of them going down together and setting the stage for Bioshock 1/2. I would've high-fived that shit and probably sobbed like a little bitch too. But no, we got an ending that some asshole probably thought was really "smart" without actually running it through some actual smart people. Oh well.
Elizabeth was waifu of the year though, so brownie points there.
>>343850714
underage or weeb?
>>343851135
I think dunkey said the same thing about upgrades. You need money to buy stronger weapons, but if you die you lose money, making the game harder and sending you into a vicious cycle of nonsense.
>>343849772
No idea, I really think it hurt itself more labeling itself as a bioshock game, if they had a different title but saved the rapture twist in the end it may have panned out better, once i heard it was a Bioshock game I immediately had expectations of how the game would play.
>>343834336
I'd recommend playing it for an hour or so to see if it's something that might interest you a bit. It's not great by any stretch of the imagination, but there are definitely worse things on Steam.
>mfw bioshock 2 is the best bioshock and is the only one with a solid, cohesive story and characters that aren't pathetically written
Me on the right
>>343823983
Unlike all of the other video games that 'really happened'?
>>343851249
The latter. Haven't touched any other FPS besides the first BioShock.
I don't get how people can find infinite's combat fun, it's just so limiting. You can't get creative with it outside of some bits on skyrails.
All the vigors do the same thing, stun.
There as only a few weapons really worth using(carbine, handcannon, shotgun, rocket launcher) and even to make those decent you had to spent a poopton of cash to upgrade them.
And for the people who say the lady comstock fight was fine, you have clearly never beaten the game on 1999 mode. Both her and the handymen are so unfun to fight.
>>343851593
I just hated the camera in that game
>Can upgrade weapons
>Can only carry two weapons at a time
>Can drop your upgraded weapons and lose them forever
It still blows my mind that they thought this was a good idea.
>>343850197
If it was green for BS2 but red for BS:I, then I agree, but it was red for both.
>>343851848
If you're talking about the helmet hud, you can remove that in the options menu and increase the fov in the ini files if you want.
>>343851996
no i ment that camera thing you get where you get bonus powers for staring at enemies for an amount of time
I didnt mind the picture in the first game but the camera in the second was tedious as fuck
>>343851848
I forget, did it reward you with better fighting while you were recording, or did it reward you for drawing out the battle and letting them attack more?
In the end, the porn was the only good thing from this game
i love how ken said 2 was awful so everyone jumped on that and kept saying 2 was bad then the guy goes and makes a worse version of it and it gets 10/10 wtf
>>343852159
you had to record to get buffs like killing the enemies faster and i think other active skills
i know the first one let you become invisible and shit but i forget what the second did exactly
>>343851824
>Both her and the handymen are so unfun to fight.
I got lucky with the Handymen and had that one tonic or whatever that makes you invulnerable when you hop on or off a rail. I just continually did that for a zillion minutes until it finally died.
Not fun though.
>>343852264
>>343852159

>>343852365
that's what I thought. I think the motion camera would have been great if they made it more based on your performance instead.
>>343851873
>drop your upgraded weapons and lose them forever
Is that true? doesn't upgrading just make all weapons of that type better from then on? If not, how come when you buy an upgrade it is never available for sale again?
2 weapons at once is shit, you need 3 at least
1) machine-gun, or pistol
2) rocket or grenade launcher
3) sniper rifle
>>343852570
I thought it gave you a rating depending on the weapons you use to kill the thing, so if you use a variety and you drew the battle out you'd get a higher rating and thus a bigger buff
>>343820795
Shit gameplay, 2deep4u plot that wasn't actually that complicated, below average quality Shock game.
So pic related, then?
Reminder that Bioshock 1 and even more so Bioshock 2 had stupid plot twists/dumb endings, so if you're going to say that Bioshock 1/2 is good but Infinite is bad pick a different argument.
Yes, the "wait a minute... that card" part was stupid.
Yes, the ending reeked of "2deep4u".
It was a total 180 in terms of Bioshock's previous aesthetics and "survival/psychological horror" feel, so fanboys had some serious assmad syndrome, which are the people who shitpost about it here to this day.
It wasn't bad, it was just overrated.
