They both released around the same time, and Blizzard cock-blocked Battleborn's release momentum by shipping out the Overwatch Open Beta that same weekend.

The number one reason is because it went against Blizzard. They're very different in gameplay, but Battleborn's release was dwarfed by Blizzard marketing and influence.
Nowadays, Battleborn is using heavier microtransactions and has a very scarce playbase. Not to mention it's going against Smite, which is the same type of game and more established to boot.
