What people need to realize is that localizations happen all the time. Not all of them are good, some completely butcher everything and add dumb bemes, but everything does get localized/ translated. NIER 1 is an example of a good localization. DoD3 is an example of bad localization, where the tone and speech of certain characters holds a completely different meaning and intent. Not all localization are inherently bad. It becomes bad when they butcher it and censor it .

2. In literature a good translator knows when to take liberties and when not to, how to create things such as tone or alliteration where it was important in the base text. A rigid and completely accurate translation is worthless, that's the reason wht Americans lump Tolstoy and Dostoevsky so closely together when they are vastly different writers.
A good localizer knows how to create the same feelings and reactions in the language hes translating to.

They haven't specified what exactly they're changing, but some things are just lost translation. Even the best translators can't 100 percent replicate a Japanese script. You can carry the tone, themes and message, but the exact meaning doesn't always carry too. Wordplay doesn't transfer, jokes don't really either. Extensive use of one of japan's several dozen signs of respect to give a character a certain quirk? English can't replicate that. Maybe try to, but unless you knew Japanese you'd probably never know this quirk. The reverse is true as well. Japanese doesn't have plurality, and rely on context to tell the difference. The Japanese would have to make this more obvious, where as in English you can just use the plural word.
Translation and Localization go hand in hand, and like it or not they are doing the right thing. How far they should take it is another matter, but they should never just translate.

When you don't have context, it would matter a lot. It's a video game, and video games can have logic puzzles and sometimes an important aspect of the puzzle is hinting to the player there is actually several of something. If a player doesn't get this hint due to poor translation, then the player may not be able to solve it.
