Once you get the skill "open audition" for every character they will participate in Sessions even from outside the battles, and it will count for their stage rank if I'm not mistaken.
However it does take a while until you get that skill for everyone so I'd suggest trying to keep everyone somewhat balanced until then, even if you don't like using them.
