I'm going to buy Overwatch this month and I'm planning on maining Bastion. What should I expect?

The game is based around frequently switching characters to counter enemy team composition. If you're maining you're pretty much doing it wrong. Bastion is almost op in a few situations but as a result has a shitload of hard counters that will end you.

Overwatch is a game that revolves around counter picking, if it didn't, you wouldn't be able to switch heroes mid game.
Certain heroes counter opposing heroes better than others, if you "main" a hero and refuse to counter pick you'll put yourself and your team at a great disadvantage.

Learn to move after killing a few people so they don't catch on too quick
Don't waste ammo on trying to break Reinhardt's shield if your team isn't around him to finish the kill
Wait for the Genji to STOP reflecting before shooting him
Kill Pharah before she reaches her full jump height
Don't think you can out-DPS a Zenyatta, you can't (like what the fuck)

Not that guy, but the term' Maining' doesnt not necessarily imply being an asshole in which never switch of classes
For example, I like to main certain classes, civilizations and characters in other games, but if the situation needs it, I can change to any other of them, tho I won't entirely enjoy it, because I like to play as my favorite classes/civilizations/characters

Also, if you've played tf2 heavy you know you should jump and rev around corners, and bastion works the same By jumping then hitting transform
Moving positions reloads your ammo and is often faster
Hitting ult when a gengi pops in front of you and reflects is a great option

You'll probably die a lot since he's a stationary target with 300hp and people can hit him from behind cover due to large hitboxes as long as they see his red outline
