Probably. But at the end of the day, they're more or less supporting two platforms on their own, so sometimes to cover a drought I'm guessing they have to release an okay game in 12 months development than a great game in 24 months development

Is it just me or did the Nintendo of yesteryear have a lot more of a edge factor to their games? Along with a lot more obvious charm.
Not just Diddy Kong's Quest, but all three of the DKC games come to mind too. Before the games felt like they had darker themes at times. While now the game in OP's pic seems like it was built just for babies.
With red coins thrown in as the only challenge for adults who still play their games.

Yes, yes the did. It's hard to say what did it, although I doubt it was strictly a matter of NSMB getting so much money. Part of it I think is an increasingly conservative mindset of Nintendo's top devs. I'm pretty sure they're starting to see bloat in places that really shouldn't have been cut, and franchise 'purity' has become a top priority.
Considering where they're going with Paper Mario, I doubt it.

They still have them, it's just more rare. Like the ghost in Super Mario 3D Land or the background in Galaxy 2 with those creepy figures in the mountain. Kirby games haven't changed much at all with it either. The atmosphere has gotten dull in their latest games though I feel, especially Mario.
