Fans had to deal with so much from community incompetence,style chances, unity engines,indie game looks with a big budget in an effort to see a new franchise. One they loved with care and nostalgia. I was an anime fan on prom night. Me and my friends discussed the currently airing anime, and if I recall correctly it was right around the end of that year's fall season so it was pretty exciting and we had tons to discuss.

The Mega Man franchise is one of the most populated franchises of all time. They have over 40 video games, which I believe makes it the second largest video game franchise in the world (barring Mario, but maybe beating Final Fantasy). Within that franchise, there are at least a dozen games that are considered amazing, and at least a dozen more that are good to okay.
You could spend a year playing every Mega Man game (Even if you went full NEET and powered through every single MM game as fast as possible it would still take at least a month), and then there are the fanmade levels and creations that go on endlessly.
Sure, does it suck that Capcom stopped making Mega Man games? Yes.

As development went along, there were many shitshows as the years went by, Dina was a horrendous community manager, the graphics ended up looking like shit from the original test footage, ideas got scrapped due to "tight budget" as Inafune tried to turn MN9 into his own franchise before the first game was even out, and the shitloads of delays
As this was all occurring, people started to realize that the person responsible for making Capcom shit in the first place was Inafune himself, who pushed Capcom to become more western and fuck over the company and then left to start up his own company to become his own Capcom that he had full control over

And after all that they then again tried to position themselves for a few months as the alternative despite terrible reviews, to the point where they put their booth in the parking lot in front of the E3 where no one wanted them and acted like that was their plan all along.
OUYA is a case study of bad ideas and bad PR turning an interesting concept into a shit product and brand, and MN9 won't ever come close to them, unless the game stops working at all and they act like it's a feature.

In a way I think I'm kind of glad things went down with MML3/RA the way they did. There they were working on a long-awaited sequel, but using a cast of characters and story I cared fuck-all about that had nothing to do with the previous two games. At most you might find the old crew as NPCs, and the entire cliffhanger from MML2 would probably only be mentioned in the background.
