Jesus it aged like milk, and that's being kind.

I enjoyed the battle system.
It probably was one of my first RPGs other than Chrono Trigger.
>>
>>343647240
Turn ATB to max speed, it's a masterpiece. Otherwise have fun trying to stay awake.
>>

Nah, play with a fan translation patch.
>>
>>343648308
You generally play JRPGs for the battle systems and what not.
>>
>>343649219
Please
Off course!
>>
>>343649219
Only specific sections of Midgar are translated weirdly.

Everything else is at least solid to pretty good. Don't know why Midgar is so shit, guess it was the first thing they worked on before they knew how to English.
>>
>>343649331
JRPG's have the worst battle systems ever.

It's literally just waiting and then pushing attack, at best you cast a fucking spell, it's boring and requires no thought or effort.

The remake seems to be doing something right at least, you can fucking MOVE your character around and DO STUFF, took awhile but the nippons are finally getting the hang of what "gameplay" means.

If you post was sarcasm (which it likely was) then I look like a dummy.

Yeah but you can fucking MOVE, you can dodge shit and navigate the level.

It's like an actual video game.

It was amazing when it first came out. I played the shit out of it. I don't think much of it nowadays though.
>>
>>343648659
The 15 FPS and smaller resolution in battle ruins it. At least the PC version let's you see their faces I'm combat.
>>
>>343648308
This is the sephiroth of posts.
>>
>>343650798
You're right I haven't played many JRPG's, mostly because the boring combat.

I did play Grandia 2 though and it was pretty much the same as FF.

I'll probably play Grandia 1 now that I have time, I heard the game is around 100 hours long and requires a fuck ton of grinding.
>>
>>343648308
>felt like a game made for a teenager

That's because it was, faggot. I legitimately thought this was the greatest game if all time when I was 9 years old.

Now (age 27), JRPG's seem like the cringiest shit unless the game makes the story take a back seat to gameplay
>>
It was kind of shitty back then and even shittier now because it has aged so badly. I even thought the graphics looked awful for its time.

It's literally "psssh, nothin personnel kid" the game.
>>
>>343651423
>I'll probably play Grandia 1 now that I have time, I heard the game is around 100 hours long and requires a fuck ton of grinding.

Lol
>>
>>343653624
Yes, I've seen countless threads on /v/ how there's a massive difficulty spike near the end of the game, you have to put everything to a hold and grind like a motherfucker.

And if you went past a certain point there are only small amount of places you can grind on making it even more monotonous.

it was my favorite game as a kid as well. and I still get crazy nostalgic when I hear any of the OST and replay it atleast once every other year.

>Everything else is at least solid to pretty good.

Nah, there's oddities outside Midgar. Don Corneo uses his Japanese laugh in Wutai instead of his localized laugh from Wall Market, Hojo in Gast's videos uses "copies" instead of clones (he used "copies" in the Japanese version, but they changed most instances of it to clones), I could swear there was a mistranslation in the party where Cloud's regaining his memories, but I can't remember what it was. There was a mistranslation in the scene when Barret tells Tifa what's been going on since she was in a coma, and some other stuff I can't remember or didn't catch. I don't really know if I consider the "doing in my boss" thing a mistranslation, I took it the same way at first when I played it in Japanese. It's vaguely worded (like everything else in Japanese) and you can take it as Alena accusing Cloud of killing her boss, or you can take it as her accusing him of just roughing him up.
>>
>>343654128
No.
>>
>>343653937
I can see how it can be hard to someone who doesn't understand the battle system bit if you take the time to learn it it is a very exploitable. I beat the game somewhere around level 40 and I never had to grind. I did however fought every encounter I came across and put an emphasis on levelling my techs to level 5 and a few low level spells like burn

Final boss got to move one time and then was cancelled and delayed to death
>>
>>343655058
>it's not hard if you use exploits
No way? But where's the fun in that?

What? The game does a pretty good job ferrying you from place to place.

I guess I should consider myself lucky that I don't notice this "aging" thing people always talk about. FF VII is still just as good now as it was 19 years ago to me.

That's because games don't actually age and people say it to save face or... Something when they can't think of any real reason why they have an opinion (which you don't need a reason for to begin with)

the sound effects / soundtrack, which is the strongest element of nostalgia, for me at least.

again, there is no pc version. only betrayal.
>>
Are there mods to make the game more challenging. Materia is a fucking AMAZING system with tons of depth, but it easy to break the game because of it
>>
>>343658386
i personally fucking love the way it looks, esp the blocky ass area sprites. i guess its just nostalgia, but i would probably love the style even in a modern game.

then again i dont give a single fuck about graphics and genuinely don't understand people who do.
>>
>>343647240

It was OK, and definitely a product of its time.
>>
>>343650638
Oh, so you're an autist with ADHD.
Good to know. You wanna go play with the red ball over in the corner, sugar?
>>
>>343660285

>then again i dont give a single fuck about graphics and genuinely don't understand people who do.

Yeah, same here. Great graphics are great, I appreciate detailed, pretty visuals. If they're shit though, that's still fine as long as the game's fun to play.
>>
>>343660212
Enjoyed this, though it still felt easier than I'd have liked.

I played on PC (with a 2880x1800 15" screen as well!) and my Vita. I honestly prefer the lower resolution version, polygons look weird when they're so sharp imo. I'm having a hard time putting my thoughts into words, but the shapes of objects look more like how they're supposed to with all the jaggies sort of "rounding out" some aspects of it. Like Cloud's wrists look more like they're curved at a lower resolution as opposed to being just a hexagon.
>>
>>343656527

There's some mod that makes playing with the Xbox 360/Xbox One controller just like using a Dualshock on a PSone.
>>

Same.

also could you not just mod in the ps1 soundtrack?

I can't think of a JRPG with a better story so, yes.
>>
>>343662801

I never played it as a kid. I picked it up in a Steam sale as an adult and loved it.
