You can glean that just by using basic observational skills, they control (almost) exactly the same and you have more options in combat than before. The counterpoint to that is that managing to deal with Angelus' weight and relatively slow tracking makes things like learning how to lead fireballs so you can kill Inuart fast enough to get Ending C before B fun. Every aerial boss battle in the first game felt like something extremely serious, daunting and was a weighty challenge, while 2 lacked a lot of gravitas in its battles outside of fighting Caim, who still was far easier than any of the bosses in 1.

DoD1 was also more interesting in that you had to learn the weapons rhythm to use the power moves effectively, and also get kills to power up so you cant just spam the magic like a jackass.
Nier's magic makes the game too easy and you only need like 2 of them. All DoD3 has for magic is the not-devil trigger, I do like 3's weapons though.

Am I the only one who thinks that the 'DoD1's gameplay is purposely shit' argument is dumb? Like, to me it doesn't make any sense. You're playing as Caim, a crazy killing machine. Wouldn't it make more sense for the game to have good gameplay that makes you enjoy the killing? You know, to make you feel like Caim? So you get why he's doing all this and make you feel like shit afterwards?
My second point is the aerial combat. If it was really Taro's intention to make a game that you can't enjoy, then why are the aerial levels so fun? It just doesn't fit into the picture. To go even deeper into this, did he ever actually say that the game was bad purpose? Seriously, I don't get where this meme came from.

Taro himself admitted that the game was imperfect and he was still brushing his chops as a game designer. So theres no question about the game being a little offkey.
But I enjoyed it for what it is. Thats all that matters.

I got this as my first PS2 game when I was 11 and could barely understand English. It all flew past me as well, I got endings A and B back then. Replayed it again this spring, and immediately saw new things in the opening cinematic and even the title screen.
That title screen, holy fuck. Creepy whispers.
But as has been said all through the thread, the ground combat is shit. Aerial combat, which I hated back then is surprisingly good on re-visiting.
Bossfights were pretty good.

I actually did do it like that though. Read from lparchive. Everything's great about the 1st game honestly except the gameplay and that's why I didn't bother, just wanted to know the story. 2 was kinda the opposite, got further in but ultimately didn't care too much about what was happening. 3 looked ass backwards all around and I don't even get why. Was it that hard to make the battle at least functioning when they nailed that in NIER? Felt stiff and unresponding all the time, didn't like the characters at all either.
