It used to be alright in early Dark Souls days, but after it got a PC port it turned into absolute cancer, and then Dark Souls 2 kicked things into overdrive.

I kinda agree? The story itself wasn't anything of note to me but the way it was told was pretty cool. and despite how it was handled in not the best way, it had pretty unique and refreshing mechanics and atmosphere.

I still maintain that if you literally only took out the jumpscares then FNAF would be one of my favorite horror games. as for the retarded lengths the series has gotten into now, I can't say the same, but still.
