Well, if you want some hope, there was a "To be continued" line found on the coding of Ep.2. But they scratched that
Besides, the ending with the seven chaos emeralds i sequelbait, since Little Planet is still trapped inside the Death Egg
They were working on a Sonic Mobile game with the plan to be episodic. Someone at SEA decided they should slap "Sonic 4" onto the project. Fans of the Genesis games lost their shit over this (it'd be like Adventure fans being given a game like Secret Rings or Unleashed Wii and calling it "Sonic Adventure 3"). SEGA realized they pissed off the target audience instead of exciting them. Cancelled any further developments, but Episode 2 was probably too far in development to can, so it happened, and they cut out any implications for a sequel.
The storys conclusion will probably remain in limbo, or Little Planet will be saved in a future unrelated title.

I can understand the criticism for ep. 1, especially when it was designed for mobile, but ep. 2 was bettter, fixed the flaws, and had the good formula for official 2D Sonic. It was about to show the potential, until SEGA decided to end it.
Sorry for my unpopular opinion, but that's just how I think about it.

The issue is that they shouldn't have needed two whole games to begin to look promising, and I'm not even sure I'd grant Episode 2 that much given its bizarre design choices.

You know what pissed me off about episode 2? The fact that they treated Tails as a new feature when that was in the second game in the franchise. Also, Episode Metal was a huge missed opportunity
And still, Ep.2 feels like a copout with that shit ending wich is obviously sequelbait but SEGA doesn't want a case of foot in mouth
