The goal is to reach the center of the universe, and it works how you described it.
The multiplayer will be as they say in the beginning but that will stifle people's enjoyment if they can't interact with other players so they will probably add something early on that allows people to easily find eachother.

It doesn't store what everyone creates. Maybe if you decide to wipe out all of a certain species on a planet that kind of thing will be saved, if you blow up the planet that will be saved, but anything like the digging you do or the animals you kill won't be saved because it's not important.

I highly doubt that anyone who's actually excited for No Man's Sky has been playing video games for more than five years. Games like this have existed for decades, going back to Elite if not earlier, and many of them (including X and Privateer) actually have engaging story and side content.

I honestly think it will. Not because they're going to make money or the game will suddenly become good, but because FDev are stubborn enough to keep it alive by contracting other games to make such as that new Planetcoaster game coming out soon.
ED will make a minute amount of money from the whales stupid enough to keep shelling out full price for the incomplete expansions, enough that there will be a small team working on it and occasionally releasing content. I don't have any faith in any of their future expansions though.
