OP said villain.

Kerrigan was manipulated into becoming what she was, essentially a victim, and then when she was cured she was a hero.

Glados was a victim as well.

For good or bad, most people (male and female) prefer playing games with male characters. Not only the protagonist, but also the antagonist.

I don't agree with it and I prefer stories with females. But sales figures don't lie. Across the board, games, movies and books that focus on females tend to have a harder time getting an audience. Even Pixar saw a huge drop off in ticket sales when they made Brave.

Japan at least tries to have female protagonists and antagonists more than the west. But still very much a minority. Girls are still mostly seen as eye candy in Japan. Which is still better than in the west, where women have to be more butch and bland than the men.
>>
Cackletta in M&L: SSS was good.

Every time someone makes this thread though, it makes me realize that there really aren't a whole lot of good female villains.

The Starcraft saga should have ended with Jim Raynor, Artanis, and Zeratul putting Kerrigan the Bitch queen of blades down and dismantling the zerg.
>>
>>343574263
I'd call Kreia a "force" of nature, not really a straight villain. She was kind of a dick, but she wasn't outright evil. It's pretty much guaranteed that she lost to the Exile on purpose.
>>
>>343570041
Women aren't as funny, women aren't as threatening, women are harder to be seen as evil
The easiest exceptions are when women are made into distilled estrogen, but then they're not good villains
When they thematically attack masculinity or notions of their female roles, it's... a little bit closer, but they're still shit

I think most "good" female villains I've seen have had some kind of mental illness, which is also easy mode as far as villains go,
The main reason is it's just in general much easier for men to be portrayed as villains

Well there are several issues with writing females. For one, the fact that most writers are men, and as such they aren't as apt to be able to write female characters.

And then there's an issue of how said females are portrayed, which they need to be much more careful with than male characters. You can portray a man any kind of way as long as he isn't gay or maybe black, but not women, for the same reasons as the latter. That's the main reason why people call out females on being mary sues more often than males.

I agree. That's the majority of the reason we don't see writers even attempt to write women. Because its a lose/lose situation. Make a strong, independent woman and women say they're unrealistic. Make a woman feminine and obsessed with men, and women complain its sexist. Try to do something in the middle and men complain the girl is bland.

Men can writer women just fine. The best aspects of writing a character are the same for men and women. The problem is more that writers aren't allowed to write women. As >>343576432 pointed out, people complain no matter what you do. This is also why we have so many stupid men in movies/TV these days. Because its okay to portray a male as a bumbling idiot, but not a woman.

>>
>>343575842
>Women aren't as funny
depends on how they're written, really.
But yes, it's much easier to make a believably evil man.
In real life, men just aren't as empathetic as women so it's way to make them seem believably evil.
Obviously men are also more aggressive and physically imposing too, both are often key features of villains.
But I believe in the female antagonist. It's just, it's hard to write/create one.
Dahlia Gillespie from Silent Hill was good. Very creepy and twisted.
Queen Sectonia was nice. Obviously she's not human which made things WAY easier but still, she was very enjoyable.
There are more too.

I agree that there's a big difference between male and female writing, but not that men are worse at writing women.

Take Life is Strange for instance. Brilliantly written, all male staff.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4375662/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_wr#writers

Dragon Age Inquisition. Kinda bad, cringe worthy romance sections, mostly female writing staff.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3763912/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_wr#writers

The Last of Us and Uncharted 4 excelled in writing when Amy Henning went off to work for EA...

Of course, people are more than their sex and there are some outstanding female writers out there, but from a male perspective I feel that the track record for female writing in games have been skewered towards male writers... Maybe it's because the characters end up as something we perceive as perfect, in this largely male-dominated hobby.

Talking about Dragon Age again, it's a series that has a massive female following, even more than Witcher, which is also fantasy. Whenever you see some female gamer collection video/roomtour thing on youtube, it's always Zelda shit or Dragon Age shit they are waaaay into, compared to all the other things.

Kerrigan was still a villain. There are tons of examples of good guys becoming bad guys.

Queen Zeal but I think Lavos manipulated her.
>>
>>343578945

Neither was Bugs Life or Toy Story 2 or a host of Pixar films. But they still did fine. The reason Brave fell flat was the focus in advertising was a female. And while that caught my interest, the majority of women out there tend to ignore something unless it has a male focus. Despite all the feminists chanting for female equality...the majority of women don't seem to want it.
>>
>>343579193

They make it pretty clear that Queen Zeal went mad with power. Not that Lavos put those thoughts into her head. In other words, she had evil intentions before she gained magic. And the magic just gave her the power to abuse it. This is also why no one else in Zeal seems to go crazy except ironically the one guy who doesn't use magic (Baron).

Think of her as a female Golbez. Just, without the stupid Naruto level story.

I always found Zeal's madness to be ambiguous. You could say she had evil intent all along. But at the same time, Schala mentions how Zeal has changed. There was a noticeable shift in her. Also, how is it that she managed to have such a strong bond with Lavos?
>>
>>343579994

She had the Mammoth Machine, which she used to directly tap into Lavos' magic. Then she built the Ocean Palace to get even closer to Lavos.

But all of these things were her decision. Lavos was just sleeping under the earth, content to hide out until 1999 AD. She woke him up. Though its not really explained how she formed a connection with him and didn't get destroyed/teleported like everyone else.
>>
>>343571483
>Kerrigan was manipulated
Metzen please go
Kerrigan was the Queen Bitch of the Universe, she was a villain, even if she was "corrupted", she wasn't a puppet doing everything Amon wanted. She chose to crush the UED, to kill Fenix and raid the Kel-Morians. She chose to infest Razagal.
>>
>>343580552
I always thought the subtext was that Lavos fed her with these ambitions, in order to steal the mammon machine.
>>
>>343581334

I didn't really see any story showing that Lavos was even awake at the time. And all the stuff NPCs and Schala said in Zeal kept pointing to the Queen being the one who was building the devices to interact with Lavos, not the other way around.

How do you think she got the ideas to build such things? Zeal only managed to be rise to power, because her family had a monopoly on red rock. And the red rock was highly conducive to magic. Hence why what's-his-name made the red knife, because he new the dream rock would awaken the true sword.

People were literally manifesting dreams into reality. "But how does Lavos play into dreams?", you might be wondering. The answer is the black wind. Janus/Magus could sense it. The black wind was Lavos's influence.

Between 65 million BC and 12,000 AD, humans were pretty much alone and able to advance. The game doesn't say specifically that Lavos had given people technology or knowledge. It also says the people of Zeal built the machines that allowed magic to be harnessed.

Could Lavos have been influencing people to gain knowledge and magic? I suppose so. But it wouldn't really serve a purpose for him, since he was going to just destroy everything anyway. And why would he want people tapping into his power (which he was collecting from the planet)?

All evidence points more to humans randomly finding a tap to Lavos and using it to gain magic and knowledge. But not by Lavos' design. Which goes back to Queen Zeal. She went mad with power on her own accord. Not because Lavos was controlling her. But it becomes hazy after that as Queen Zeal clearly seems to be either a puppet or controller of Lavos.

You have a point about the time window there. But even considering all that time, you can see how humans without magic lived. They remained in a primitive state and lived underground to survive the cold. Suggesting that they weren't very technologically advanced without the aid of magic.

Lavos could draw power from the planet more efficiently, with a device like the the mammon machine. If it can tap into Lavos, then why couldn't it tap into the planet itself? Lavos evolves by absorbing the DNA of the life around him. With human ingenuity, and the technology, he would be more powerful than ever. And that's exactly what you find out when you enter his shell. On the inside, he must have taken some human ideas, and created an advanced core.
