I found DW8 a bit more enjoyable than WO3 simply because WO3 is based on 'older' Musou (DW7/SW3/etc.). DW8 has more polish to the controls and a good deal of content, it's usually considered one of the best in the series to date.

Going further on this China basically remained in a constant period of strife from the fall of Jin right up to Luo Guanzhong writing RotTK. There was a lot of nostalgia for the peaceful times of the Han (no one alive then lived during it but still) and Liu Bei as a noble underdog fighting to restore the Han was an easy pick for a protagonist. It also helped that Shu had no official historians as Wu and Wei did, relying on Zhuge Liang's less objective accounts of history.

The way the story is told is definitely the best in 7 but the game really suffered for it too. I honestly don't understand why they can't just make a compromise between storytelling and gameplay by letting you use any character in the story mode once you've already beat the stage.
I miss all the goofy dialog you used to get by using characters who weren't actually supposed to be on a stage in the older games. The cast feels shallower and shallower with each game.
