>>
>>343557357
All of those are great and worth playing, as is Castlevania III (my personal favorite).
>>
>>343556583
For classic, yeah. Might as well.
If you enjoy the first game, be sure to play 3, Bloodlines and Rondo. Super is kind of polarizing, but worth a look. Simon's Quest is kind of infamous for being a total fucking mess, so I'd leave it for later or not at all, unless you're feeling ballsy.

Then there's the Metroidvanias. SotN or AoS are probably the best to start with, but you can pretty much pick and choose any of them. Just bear in mind that HoD, PoR and OoE get polarizing opinions too.

Yeah, yeah. The music is definitely worse, and there are other alterations, but it's not as if Dracula's Curse is fundamentally different. I actually prefer it in some ways thanks to the higher difficulty. But if he wants to play it on his Wii U from the eShop it's not that big of a loss.

I'd rather they just make every enemy have a decent drop rate and just make the really cool/unique souls one-off hidden enemies or something. The best weapons in AoS were all carefully hidden anyway, so it'd just be an extention of that and an extra incentive to explore properly.
Or maybe just like certain glyphs in OoE. Getting the Jiang Shi one was a fucking nightmare, but at least you only had to kill it once, and you felt like you accomplished something rather than just running in and out of the same room for an hour or more.

I beat SOTN for the first time two weeks ago

Hot DAMN was that a good time. The game was an easy, unbalanced mess (I guess I am used to the later SOTN-clones on the DS), but I couldn't put the game down. If only the later games had as much money poured into the aesthetics as SOTN did. Not to mention

>hidden bosses
>optional areas
>all these different combat options (familiars, magic, weapons

Pretty amazing that the game felt so full of content, even if it might not be as technically long as some of the games to come out after it.

I actually have a bootleg Turbo disc of Rondo of Blood; I play it every now and again, though i usually turn to Maria because playing as Maria is EZ modo. I need to man up; I beat X68000 for fuck's sake.

Even if it did, you could just absorb it muliple times in one fight.

>>343567484
Sort of, but Aria of Sorrow and Symphony of the Night achieved their goals of being fun to explore. Order of Ecclesia is just dull. Even compared to Portrait of Ruin it's frequently dull.

>How come nobody bought this game?
Fairly niche, and being WiiWare exclusive limited its player base and recognition. I don't think any of the games in the ReBirth series sold very well. Great game, though.
>>
>>343567252

Well, the only real castlevania is the first one. Every single castlevania after that changed the mechanics in one way or another, so if you're gonna be picky, you might as well be full picky and only accept the original NES game as the true castlevania game.
>>
>>343567509
my problem, and I think a lot of other people's problem with sciv is that the controls don't feel like castlevania should (stiff and difficult).
half the fun of castlevania is learning to react quickly to obstacles with a limited moveset and rondo does such a better job at it than sciv

>>
>>343567509
People recognized that IV had some weird design choices even before Aron's video. An interview with one of the devs even confirmed that the mechanics and level design/enemies were on two different pages, IIRC (I think it was a HCG101 interview, though I might be wrong). It's an excellent game, but it is a little clumsy.
>>
>>343567962

Rondo's controls are very different from the first Castlevania though. Way more flexible, faster, and you can change direction mid-air AND do the backflip, not to mention the item crash. And Maria, but that's optional, but still Richter is enough different than the original Simon from CV1.

Castlevania III already changed a lot of stuff around with being able to switch characters on the fly, you start as Trevor, but as soon as you get Alucard, bam, you can fly over enemies like it's nothing.

Even Bloodlines has diagonal whipping, and X68000 lets you whip down while jumping.

Rondo was also the first in the series that would let you jump while on stairs.
>>
>>343568324
So the only worthy 16-bit follow-up to III is actually Haunted Castle.
>>
>>343568324
Rondo had some improved mechanics, sure, but they only served to make what was previously unfair more manageable (jumping on stairs and changing direction midair).
Apart from the item crashes, I always thought of Castlevania as the game where you play as a human being. You can change the way you face when you jump, but not your momentum, etc., and I think Rondo still has a realistic-enough main character that it fits the mold.
>>
>>343568739

Rondo is an excellent game, as are IV or Bloodlines, but none of them are like the original CV.

Still, I think the series was more or less consistent throughout the different entries, even if they all changed stuff. The real change and genre shift was SOTN.
>>
>>343568978
The New Generation does, at least its jumping physics. You can only do a jump up and a forward long jump, no wiggling around while mid-air.
>>
>>343568739
The way the stairs worked before and being unable to change direction midair wasn't really "unfair" though. The stairs worked the way they did to impose a sense of claustrophobia and restriction. Being able to jump just relieves some of that tension. I wouldn't call it an improvement, just less punishing. Same goes for the increased midair flexibility.
>>
>>343569182

Yeah but it also has diagonal whipping with Morris, and all-direction (and long range) with Eric. it's still different enough from the original.
>>
>>343567642
>multiple absorptions did nothing
No they did, but only for the Familiar glyphs. The more times you absorbed a familiar glyph like the zombie, owl or Jiang Shi summons the more levels they'd gain. The maximum level was 3 I believe.
>>
>>343570496
Huh. Was there an actual indicator on the glyph showing that? And again, either way, you could still absorb the Jiang Shi glyph multiple times in one fight. It's just annoying because the faggot jumps around so much and hits like a fucking truck.

The 255 level cap was an unlockable, can't remember how you got it though. Also if you ever decide to do the same thing I'd suggest equipping two exp boosting rings and doing the cat transformation's X attack. That'll finish the Jiang Shi boss in no time, while giving you a fuck ton of exp.

Eh, I don't know if I'd ever want to, in all honesty. I enjoyed OoE for what it was, but I was about level 50-something on normal difficulty on my first playthrough with the Large Cavern and the other optional zone completed, and I was still level 50-something on NG+ when I was trying to go for all the medals. Grinding that much just seems like a chore, even if I got to the point where farming Jiang Shi was practical. Thanks for the suggestions all the same.

I vaguely remember the glyph fusions for those being pretty good. Nitesco + something else destroys Dracula in seconds on normal though, can't remember what it was.

Because videogames.
But if you want to think harders, I'd guess it's because the game you play is merely a representation of the events that took place in the story, so even though you could calculate how weaker or stronger you got by counting the numbers on screen, in a realistic interpretation of the story it's possible that there was never that much of a gap between early and later enemies or even yourself as levels went by.

Are you a complete dumbfuck or what? That's the damn setup for the entire point of the damn game. It was unprecedented approach and it was executed in perfect way.

For once there's a game where you actually start as SOMEBODY. To make sure even dumbfucks like you understand, they put you against a wolf that's bigger than you. He's literally boss size enemy. But you go through him like hot knife through butter. You're supposed to go "oh wow what the hell is going on?! how am I this strong?" and then Death turns you into pussy. So business as usual just like any game ever.
But you had a little taste of all that power. You're motivated more than ever to get it all back.
