They wanted the Dota name to be public domain so Blizzard could use it for their own ASSFAGGOT and generate more interest because the Dota name is so recognized and it did originate from their games. But they settled so Valve owns the Dota name and Blizzard just changed the name of their game to Heroes of the Storm. Valve did change some hero names as they were in direct reference to Warcraft characters like Windrunner and Necrolyte. Skeleton King might have been part of that too, but his change was so extreme in comparison to everything else it seems like something Valve wanted to do more than Blizzard wanted.

Skeletons are not allowed in vidya in China, or if they are technically legal it's basically something that no one does at all.
They changed Skeleton King to Wraith King as a result, and also gave Clinkz a new model.

There's nothing official, but I heard it was Valve wanted to distance themselves from the mod and make Dota 2 it's own unique thing. So I guess instead of trying to come up with a new unique hero they just altered Skeleton King.

Hes a hero in Heroes of the Storm, and a major/minor character in Diablo 1-2-3.
The one from WC3 Dota is inspired by Blizzards Skeleton King.

But every Dota 2 character was inspired by a Blizzard character but they all stayed the same. The only other change was venomancer who was based off the SC Hydra. But Sniper is still the same and so is Timbersaw. Not to mention Brightwing and Puck co-existing with no outcry from either party.

A big part of the court case that people like to forget is that both Valve and Blizzard wanted to end up NOT stepping on each others toes whenever possible.
Skeleton King by Valve would have been one of those a lot more than others, especially since SK went to HoTs.
