10 million players doesnt mean 10 million people playing at once. with games, a majority of people that get them play for a couple of hours and thats it. its why even the easiest steam achievements for games are almost always below 70%, because a good amount of people didnt even get past the main menu for some reason.

Borderlands inarguably made Gearbox a recognizable name, and borderlands 2 core shot them into the top of the charts. Hell, they even jumped in and put out Duke Nukem Forever, which didn't do well but did a whole lot better than it could have without riding Borderland's coattails.
