Why the fuck did they put Snake Eater on 3DS in the first place? Here's an idea for you; Peace Walker 3D. Streetpass does an automated 'outer ops' thing between your teams and theirs as well as that dumb 'gift items' thing. You'll actually be able to find people to co-op with because people actually own 3DSes. Spotpass download for free camo skins etc. Online multiplayer that shit, there was no excuse for the PSP original not having it. Let people take pictures of shit and make camo out of it.

Looks more like the model from Mario Kart DS. I distinctly remember Mario having low polycount hands in the DS version, whilst having rounded hands in Mario Kart 7.

The models are why. They're actually very high poly, presumably so that they can be recycled for the next few generations much like they did with quite a lot of Pokemon Stadium models well into the Wii era.

The benefits of them being high poly are kind of lost on a 400x240 screen though.
