They're trying to keep ps4 users from getting mad at being cucked with paid online and 15 fps in ports and going to pc.

Quantum Break is ridiculous in the pure TECHNOLOGY it pushes but because it's an absolute monster in specs on PC and "Only 720P" on xbone despite the complex temporal resolution tech (As in the one sony is trying to use for the Neo for upscaling to 4K). Exclusivity in general is bad and some people on PC like Japanese games. That's basically publisher decision in the case of third party exclusivity and they do it so thebusiness ir profitable in the long run and consoles are vital to this model, always have been in fact. If they port basically everything to PC, console users will begin naturally gravitating to PC and with piracy, a limited install base and the demand for lower pricing margins on PC/SteamGOG or wherever they start loosing money and eventually the ability to pay their devs. To me, once they start porting games to PC and they start doing it with every game they can't go back to consoles. Some third party exclusives are a necessarily evil, one that square recognizes very well.
That being said, fuck timed exclusivity and deals like that. First and second party exclusivity deals are different though and are okay.

Absolutely. Its one of the best if not the best visual novels available on Steam. Its extremely interactive and has a nice edge to it that makes it exciting. Finding the contradictions in people's remarks during class trials after a murder has taken place is incredibly fun. The sales of multiplats being higher on consoles, even for originally PC oriented series, compared to PC versions shows the majority of the consumer base, the ones that buy the big name games, are on consoles. There are exceptions to this, XCOM being the notable one and driving the development of the sequel to PC first.
The simple truth is the average consumer just wants a videogame box to play the latest AAA multiplat. The PC is seen as being, somewhat justly and somewhat unjustly, too expensive, too confusing, and too niche. The reality of the situation doesn't matter here, what matters is what the average consumer thinks is true and drives their behavior. Sony could port every single one of its exclusives to PC, and they would still sell better on the Sony console the vast majority of the time.

Consoles are where most of the sales of games happen these days, and they're why series like the Witcher, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls have exploded in budget and sales. The Witch devs have explicitly told us, that it was because of consoles that the Witcher III could be made as it was. Even XCOM was obviously made with consoles in mind to bank on the majority of the market and sales being there, despite its failure to get sales there.
The PC is not an equivalent competitor to consoles in the eyes of most consumers. If all games went multiplat to the PC, we might see some shifts in sales from the combine small population that decided it might be worth it now to have access to everything, the few PC first people that were buying consoles for exclusives and now don't have too. But I would be good money that it's going to take more than that to move sales away from being console focused.
The cost/benefit for console companies of actually allowing this, I don't know. They don't exactly make money on console sales, but games on PC tend to be cheaper too. As fucking retarded as companies are sometimes, someone somewhere is paid good money to figure out how much money could be made allowing or restricting certain games.

The wiiU is literally the lowest end PC current gen console on the market and lowest selling because of it's gimmick which costs so much to manufacture they still can't sell the console for a reasonable and what it should be worth. First off though that's subjective, tons of people advocate for the PC + PS4 combo and should reject the idea of wiiU + PC combo, both have first party games which seem to be of value to people so neither is technically more pointless than the other. Secondly the wiiU has been on the market one year longer than the PS4 and its spec is considerably easier to target and develop for because it's technically last gen so Nintendo mastering last generation hardware and releasing games without fps drops even though it occurs in many of their titles, just isn't impressive. Thirdly, you can compare PS4's and wiiU library at the end of the year when their release timelines sync up, both will have great first party content. There is also a fuckload of texture popping in Xenoblade X and probably other games I've missed but Bayo drops to 20, so dose star fox and a few other games.
That being said Nintendo usually runs a tight ships and their games are usually released with satisfactory performance, the wiiU has great games and so dose the PS4.
More than anything, what matters more is if you're irl crew has PC or console. I have both a PC and ps4 but I find myself playing on PS4 more for this reason.

Not easily. You'd either have two screens at once on your monitor which doesn't look good and takes up unnecessary screen space or you'd have to change features up to make the games play a bit differently to compensate for the fact that you only have one screen. Think for instance: when you play on Wii U, your whole TV has one picture on it while your gamepad has another. That's not the same as having two screens at once on your PC.

I wouldn't exactly compare this specific gen since the Wii U has been a bit lackluster, with most nice games having been released in 2014. But if you were to compare how many exclusives and how many multiplatform titles you could have on each, even though PS4 is definitely trying, normally people go with Nintendo consoles more.
Right now on PS4 I can think of a total of two games I would want, without counting all the games that I can already have on PC, and which I would end up buying on PC because I would still benefit from not having to pay a subscription fee to play online and support for graphics at my native resolution, without any blurriness. If I have to sacrifice for instance graphics quality, it'd have to do something with games.
It's like for instance, buying a handheld when you're not going to play it outside. Rather than getting it for ports, you would look for the one that has more games of your interest that you can't definitely play in other platforms. Which made for instance the DS more attractive for a home console user than the PSP, given the latter has more ports or remakes.

If companies are helping to fund new video games get developed, I can forgive exclusivity to some degree as it is not arbitrary and the fact that the games were funded means they might not otherwise exist, which means overall the situation is good for consumers. The exclusivity itself however, is not good for consumers, as it takes away choices and controls away from the consumer. But I do not consider the overall situation to be bad for consumers, as it means that games that might not otherwise exist exist. Bayonetta 2 is a big one, for example.
I do think companies simply paying to have games temporarily exclusive (not funding development, mind you) is really dumb and arbitrary, and on some levels I hate the degree of importance money has in the industry, as it results in situations like that.
However, in many cases, 3rd party games are exclusive to a platform without them being locked to that platform due to funded development. That these games simply are exclusive. Think games by GUST for example or what Square Enix often does with stuff like Star Ocean and Nier. And then there's weird things like "Play it first on Playstation" like what's going on with Final Fantasy VII Remake, which is pretty much a timed exclusivity deal. I detest the idea of timed exclusives. It just makes people wait because companies were greedy enough to want more money.
But if a game that otherwise wouldn't have existed became exclusive or a timed exclusive because of funding from Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo, then that's fine. (2/2)

Therefore, there are different incentives to own each of them. However, A PS4 and an Xbox One do not have different functionality from a PC. There is no incentive beyond exclusives to own one or the other. That is the point I'm trying to make. You don't have to like those incentives, but they are different incentives. I hope I'm not using a bad comparison, but its like having a toy action figure and a toy car. They serve different functionalities, so a kid will want both. But different colored versions of the same toy car all being sold would be kind of lame and lessen the need for having the toy.

Anyway, I never pushed the idea that exclusive were inherently a good thing for the consumer, I just implied some were made under more respectable circumstances. But with that being said, it's still not anti-consumer. Exclusives don't take away choices or controls away from you as you imply, exclusives just set a higher price point for software you want as options are still there, they just aren't favorable to your wallet. As for true third party exclusives, it's up for question why they are made and what benefit publishers get from it, I won't take a definitive stance on that but I will agreethat timed exclusive deals, perhaps like FFVII even though I don't think Sony is rich enough to buy out Square for such a prolific title nor would it be financially practical as they are already winners of the current console generation, are a pretty bad practice. Ultimately if third party exclusives created in the interest of the publishers long term strategy to remain profitable in the market and continue being able to pay their developers, it's hard for me to be against that, if that is the case.

I have both. Having a PC and PS4 is the only way. XBONE sucks, no good games on it, and the Wii-U comes out with a good game that's worth playing and buying once in a blue moon. This way I have the best of both worlds.

I just think being locked to a particular piece of hardware for something instead of being able to choose (such as you can do for multiplats) takes away choices from the consumer. Also controllers to a degree will all have relatively the same layout. You don't get to choose to use a DS3 or DS4 controller when playing a game on the Xbox One, for instance, and due to exclusivity, you don't really have the option to choose whichever you'd prefer. You can choose to get whichever version of the game suits your interests most. If you have a powerful PC, you can get that and can use its capibilities to manipulate a game using external hardware in ways you normally couldn't. You have that choice. If you don't want to do that, and you prefer the software environment of another system, you can go with another platform. But if a game is exclusive to ANY one single platform, you aren't given that choice. You have to deal with whatever the creators of the game and platform environment laid out for you. That's why I find exclusives to be anti-consumer; they take away some of the choices you may have been able to make.

Games use those functionalities to improve their own games (or at least try to, anyways). The games use them to do things that normally a PC/PS4/Xbox One can't, or at least not well. I can't normally look at one screen for some information, push a button on it, and have that affect what happens on another screen on PC/Xbox One/PS4, just as an example. Note the word normally. Some people pointed out you can have two screens in emulation. I know, I've used Desmume before. But it doesn't look good either. Its not optimal; its not like having a Wii U where your whole TV screen has one thing and then the other has another. And that other TV screen is also a controller! With motion control! Its not the same thing. The Wii U is not like the others.

Consoles don't necessarily have to have bad grafix.
Historically consoles were subsidised. The PS3 and 360 for example were roughly $100 cheaper to buy than they were to build equivalent hardware for in a PC. The N64 for several months could do things that no consumer PC could, at least until Voodoo cards came out.
Having the ability to optimise for one set of hardware means you can push that hardware far further than otherwise possible.
The problem is that developers don't optimise and manufacturers don't subsidise any more.

F-Zero would not work on a Genesis; Sonic would not work on a SNES.
Even if you're just talking about grafix, Ninja Gaiden 2/Sigma 2 demonstrates just how different the consoles could be in terms of graphics potential at least.
Now all the consoles are just dumbed down PCs are there isn't really anything limiting what can be done with gameplay as far as hardware goes. But it was not that long ago when that wasn't the case.
