D1 is the most atmospheric and the best soundtrack.
D2 is the best gameplay wise, bnet and continuation of playtime, I still play it.
D3 is not a bad game, but certainly not a Diablo game.
D2 still has an awesome atmosphere, especially in dungeons, but the overworld feels like you're playing serious sam. I don't mind big giant maps, but they should've made it to always be night and be darker, lower light radius, etc. Of course, this is only for sp play. When playing battle.net after the first week, your eyes get tired of darkness and constant focusing on what's what. Many shills have tried using maphacks to point out how bright D2 is, while it isn't. It's only lighter in the overworld, which not more than 30% of the game, even though the maps are large, most of your time will be spent in the dungeons.
I gotta admit, I play fullbright.

Diablo II is probably my favourite game of all time, but D3's core gameplay has always been and will continue to be better than D2's.
There are plenty of legitimate reasons to hate D3 but the actual using of abilities to kill monsters is fucking superb.
If D3 hadn't completely butchered the narrative and tone of the series by using the material from Richard A. 'the hack' Knaak's Sin War trilogy, D3 could have easily been the best in the series.
Diablo's gameplay has always been above average, but that was never what made it "Diablo". D3 fails at being a "Diablo" game. It's just a game awkwardly wearing the trappings of the series.
