That's the thing about multiplayer games. Multiplayer games either snowball, or they crash and burn, because they live and die on their communities. A multiplayer game could be the greatest game of all time, with thousands of potential game modes, a perfect matchmaking system, total balance between all characters and classes, gorgeous next-gen graphics that manage to be run at 60fps without a dip, and servers that never, ever crash... but if nobody's playing it, then it doesn't matter.

Honestly, I think releasing it first was a gigantic mistake, especially at full price with a season pass and DLC out the ass.
Personally, I would have put it on the backburner and see how Overwatch did and do some tweaks and adjustments to the game in the meantime to iron out existing issues. Release the game several months down the line during a dry season, with better promotion then it got, and reduce the price from $60 to $20-30 from the get-go to be competitive to Overwatch.
It might not do what they want, but it probably would not have been DOA at launch like it was with no desire for anyone to play it. This is Evolve all fucking over again.

The only people that can compete with Blizzard are likely the other really big companies, specifically Nintendo and Valve. Blizzard would get curbstomped by Valve if they ever went head to head, specifically because Valve has the advantage of owning Steam, and being known for having some of the highest quality, most anticipated games on the market.

2K is probably not too happy with how battleborn turned out, and will quietly stop supporting it after a few months, or gut it and make it F2P to recoop something.
They more or less pissed off a lot of publishers, so funding for them is probably going to probably have a lot more strings attached, or just outright refused in general. Borderlands is their biggest cash cow, but that is literally years in the making and I doubt their sales on existing games is that great.
I see it going this way: they will probably do some layoffs soon, and put all their energy into Borderlands 3 with what they have left. They might even try to pull a double-fine and do a kickstarter for a smaller project to keep money coming in, or do side projects for other studios (kind of what they were doing in the half life expansion/halo pc port days). 2K will probably at least keep them alive for BL3, and if that fails they are probably done.

Blizzard's become a bit hackish of late with some of their smaller titles, but I can't look at their history and brush them aside as a "hack studio." SC2 is one of the few good RTS games to come out in the last decade. Diablo 3 had a rough start but has turned into a fine game. And before those games you have their precursors that most people consider superior.
WoW has mutated into something of an undead cash cow, the game was great for the first two years. I've played every major MMO and barring Everquest none of them accomplished what WoW did, on the scale WoW did.
My main criticism with Blizzard is they're very hesitant to release new IP. It's easier to simply cash out on their established franchises. But at least their major titles are consistently quality.

For me, my love for Overwatch came from the disappointment that TF2 became post 2010.
The fun, easygoing, pick up style gameplay where I can play in short bursts is great. It's a comfy game for playing with friends where you can dick around and not take things too seriously. I tried CS:GO for a while, but it was just not as fun and comfy. Probably due to how much more competitive it was, even in the unranked games.

SMITE has more impactful and meaningful PvP gear than Battleborn. In SMITE counterbuilding your hero matters, in Battleborn it doesnt.
SMITE has way better and more fast-paced MOBA elements on its gameplay. Battleborn is way slower in gameplay, which is pretty fucking sad for a game thats supposed to be a hybrid of FPS and MOBA.
SMITE has actual comeback mechanics in matches, Battleborn doesnt.
SMITE's art-style is simple enough for players to understand what is happening on screen with clarity, unless we're talking about the chaotic and dangerous teamfights. Battleborn's art-style is a neon color vomit that causes headaches to players.
SMITE matchmaking system is fairly accurate, Battleborns is fucked up beyond hope.
Battleborn platinum buys you skins you cant even preview, in a 60 dollar game. SMITE you can get all recolor skins with in-game currency and you can buy the more elaborate skins with real money or gems youve accumulated over-time by logging into the game every day a week.
Battleborn all guns and abilities feel like peashooters. Even the biggest dude with the chaingun slowly chips away health bars from everyone. SMITE is filled with exciting abilities that can change the course of the teamfight dramatically, from huge amount of burst damage to instant minion wave clears and cc-abilities.
SMITE has an extensive quick chat command system, and most bought skins tend to have an all-new voice acting for each of the 40+ lines. Battleborn has none of that, only the characters commenting everything sarcastically while saying feminism is awesome.
