Part of the problem is that GW don't want a lot of stuff fleshed out in the universe. Stuff that would need to be for a decent vidya RPG to feel immersion since you don't have a GM to fudge the details.
There would also be licensing issues if something in the game was liked enough that people wanted it put into the tabletop lore.

Given how WFRP was/is popular in Europe, you could very well have a Gothic-style adventure where you die to wolves and skavens and end up toppling an overarching chaos conspiracy on a quest from the Grand Teogonist.

Everyone gets fucked in Warhammer. Its a pretty dangerous and unforgiving fucking planet. You have to be pretty phenomenal to run around stomping Ogre empires, Skaven hordes, Chaos men imbued with the gifts from the ruinous powers, and fucking warparty after warparty of neverending Orcs
Only one guy was able to run around and do shit, and from birth he was heralded to be something great foretold by the twinned tailed comet.

Chaos warriors arise from barbaric tribesman going on pilgrimages to the north pole. Along the way they brave all sorts of twisted chaos spawn and beasts and rival tribes all out for their head. The further they progress into the wastes the more the warping effects of chaos are felt not just on their enemies but on their very bodies.
By the time they complete their pilgrimage they're forever changed and gifted with hulking suits of chaos armour, many of which become infused to their very bodies.
It's the perfect setup for a big RPG, sandbox or otherwise. You could even slip briefs snippets of sci-fi into it to rekindle that oldschool warham feel where bits of 40k chaos found their way through the timestream into fantasy, resulting in chaos warriors having bolt pistols and things.

Earth caste don't go onto the battlefield either.
